    I LOVE YOU { 2:47 }
    - Savoy Orpheans - Unnamed vocalist in When It's Night Time
    Columbia 3374 (recorded 16 and 8 January 1924 respectively, issued March 1924)
    This version of WHEN IT’S NIGHT TIME was cut in Columbia’s studio at 100-108 Clerkenwell Road, and two days later the Orpheans recorded it again in HMV’s purpose-built studio in Hayes (issued as The Albany Dance Orchestra - see my upload).
    This version has one vocalist; the HMV has two. 87 years later, Columbia’s laminated ‘New Process’ ‘No scratch’ records beats the HMV. Even though it made Columbia’s records dearer to produce, the prices matched HMV’s and others. It was abandoned when the two companies formed EMI in 1931 and subsequently closed Columbia’s factory.
    At the 16 January session where this version of WHEN IT’S NIGHT TIME was recorded, the band recorded another side by the title of ‘I Love You’. It was not the same as the I LOVE YOU cut for this record on 8 January. To distinguish them, the later one was called ‘I Love You Little Jessie James’ on the label - it was a tune from a musical show called Little Jessie James that did not transfer to the UK.
    At 1:20 "If you bump into Gallagher, you'll find that Shean is near" - Gallagher & Shean were a popular US vaudeville comedy act at the time. What UK record-buyers made of it would be interesting to know.
    My two other uploads of WHEN IT’S NIGHT TIME IN ITALY (coincidentally cut the same day).
    Victor Vorzanger on Scala (recorded by Vocalion) - 18 January 1924
