I am not Polynesian, but I love the fact that they really did their research on the culture in order to make this movie, it makes it even more beautiful. When I see all the comments from Polynesian people on youtube saying they love this movie and the soundtrack (especially this opening), I feel so happy for them :D
Makes me wish Disney made a movie based in sub-saharan Africa (don't get me wrong, I love the Lion King but it would be nice for us to have a movie with actual humans lol) with an African princess and African music and based on African tales. That would be the BOMB.

I was literally saying that to a friend. I am not even Polynesian I am African and hearing that song gave me goosebumps and filled me with emotion. It was surreal, like an energy or spirit flowing through the sound and through the theatre. I didn’t even understand the words (which doesn’t bother me cause I listen to a lot of music from different cultures in their language, it’s about the feel and the sound for me) but it was very profound. Very awesome

Disney has a habit of hinting at that in its films, that there is a much deeper meaning to everything from opening scenes to small little lines. After reading this comment and now knowing this when I went to see the movie--thank you for making me more knowledgable about this beautiful culture--I immediately began to tear up when I heard it and saw the opening logos. It makes this song that much more beautiful, just like understanding the words of He Mele No Lilo.

It's beautiful, it's fun, it's funny, it's clever, it's well done, and it's a solid holdup of the Disney name. This is easily one of Disney's best movies. I loved this song ever since hearing it in the beginning credits of Moana. I'm glad somebody actually put the translation on here. The soundtrack is great, I wished they put the translation on some of the songs but at the same time, hearing a song in a different language is great too when done right. And obviously, this song is a great example of that, it reminds me of the beginning credits of the Lion King in that the beginning song is sung in the language the movie is taking place at. Anyway, thanks for sharing the Samoan translation of this song, much appreciated. :)

    • @BaraJFDA

Sadly though the lyrics that were used in Brother Bear's transformation scene was actually a Bulgarian folksong. It's completely different from traditional Inuit and Athabaskan cultures and songs that Brother Bear was supposedly based on. The creators of that film made a back-handed remark about this, claiming that barely anyone in America would understand Bulgarian folksongs. So they intended to use a foreign singing group for its "exotic qualities". Typical Disney. This was not even a surface level research. It was so disingenuous on their part. A big flaw in the production of Brother Bear.

That's because the traditional songs used in Frozen's opening theme is actually Sámi in origin. They are native people whose traditional territories are now occupied by the modern Scandanavian countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. In Frozen II, the production team literally consulted traditional Sámi culture keepers and singers to gain better insight and present them better in the film as the Northuldra tribe.
