“We tell the stories of our elders in a never ending chain,” Pre-colonial Philippines loved to tell stories and would often pass it down to their children and grandkids through words and not written. I know Philippines has probably a small portion of being Polynesian but that part gave me goosebumps
Philippines is actually part of the austronesians, and polynesians came from the same line. so technically, we were once voyagers too, as described in the austronesian migration theory and in our history books of how our ancestors came to be.
@i can't think of a name Scientific research has confirmed that many of the livestock that the Polynesians brought with them had their origins in the Philippines. Also all the peoples from Madagascar, Maritime Southeast Asia and Polynesia are constantly to be Austronesian. I don't its a coincidence that some Filipino customs such as the tattoo art of the Pintados bear a great resemblance to Polynesian tattoos.
I think it's amazing how disney and pixar's movies are making people proud of their cultures. I am proud of my scandinavian heritage, and have been thrilled with the success of How to Train Your Dragon. The fierceness and pride of the vikings and the harshness of their world really reflected in the tone of the movie. I know I am priveledged in that my cultural heritage is more 'mainstream', It makes me so happy to see other people having the chance to experience the same pride and joy.
Sarah Morales I guess it's the old nature rule, the strong will survive. When it comes to cultures it seems like that as well. But keep in mind that for example the Polynesian people had their roots in Taiwan and Asia. So who knows how their culture was before they decided to set sail? How was the culture of us Germanic people before we had the same idea? We evolve and adapt since the beginning of humanity. So don't feel bad for being too cultural mainstream. In the end, we are all on our own voyage called life. We all have to set sail and face our destiny✌
thank you for this, every time I hear the original I'm left wanting just slightly more and your version is just the right length to satisfy that feeling.
Is it weird that this makes me want to cry?? Lol i think i'm still just so glad Disney finally made a movie about our Poly people and culture and did such a GREAT job at it ❤️
While this version is excellent, and I really really wish the entire song had been in Tokelauen, the way it was cut for the movie was perfect. The cast on screen stopped singing when the song switched to English to show that this culture is so far removed from the audience that they literally don't speak english. It was really well done!

My family comes from Maui but I am the first Generation born away from Maui and my kids don't understand the importance of our heritage and are mad because I made them learn Tokelauan. I made them watch this movie and explained everything about it and in the end, they were more appreciative of their culture. Thank you, Disney!
Wow, i love this song. I love the feeling of freedom it gives me. To even begin to imagine the lives of those great voyager's on the open sea, nothing between them and the horizon. This culture is incredible and deserving of all the attention this movie brings it. As a human i am proud just to call such incredible people brothers and sisters.
I am an island boy. My heart an is always with my mother island. this music is a great reminder for anyone that finds themselves faraway from home, you can always find your way back.
Origins: SAMOA meaning 'sacred heart' or 'sacred center' (Tagata mao'i) --> TAHITI (Ta'ata maohi) --> HAWAI'I (Kanaka Maoli) --> Aotearoa/New Zealand (tangata maori) It's a chain. We literally are one people and it makes me so proud to be Polynesian. Despite all the stupid trivial arguments and disputes between us Polynesians we are all one and the same people. I look at NATIVE Hawaiians, Tongans, Tahitians, Niueans, Tokelauans, Maori's, Cook Islanders and Tuvaluans and see my literal blood brothers and sisters! I am so proud of our heritage and thank Disney for creating a movie that displayed our culture in such a beautiful way!
Thank you so much for the acknowledgment of unity within this awesome single. I agree...why should there be petty arguments over heritage among nations when we are all humankind bretheren? You have my admiration and respect, brother. I was born from the shores of Lisbon Portugal and I am happy to find a family member over the seas. Peace and cheers to you.
When I was listening to the Apollo missions as a child, I was thinking of future space missions as if they were Polynesians when they faced the ocean. This must be the spirit. To boldly go ... beyond the rift!
This version is so much stronger and the way it starts with he “away awayyy” catches you straight away and it’s happier in a way... I love Moana but I have to say this version truly better... please like this comment!
***** Ancestors are from Africa. Probably 100% African- Nigerian to be exact though i've never been to Africa let alone Nigeria. My mum's from the Igbo tribe in the south east of the country and my dad's Yoruba from the south west. There were some advanced civilizations in or around Nigeria such as the Nok civilization, the Benin Empire, Kingdom of Shonghai, etc. Interesting but not as much as Polynesian culture.
So awesome to see people around the world take interest in our culture. Much love to all! A few similarities I noticed is we have our own native languages, the traditional music and dancing sounds and looks a little like the same, and the obvious similarity is our dark colored skin and being disadvantaged minorities in western colonized countries. That's just my opinion.
To be honest this version is actually way nicer, and I’m a Moana fan... and I don’t want to say this, but this version has something more comforting and solid about it. And of course, obviously the fact that it’s longer is the reason this extension was done, and I think it’s literally amazing, because whenever I listen to the original version I always want more and this version has that part that I always want. Thanks for the version! You: *singing* your welcome!
This song creates such powerful emotions which wash over me; the idea of generations of voyagers passing on their secrets to their fellows as they search new horizons. It's so beautiful. "We tell the stories of our elders in a never-ending chain."
Wayfinders! :) I took a course in college about ancient astronomy. They're truly remarkable. If you're interested, do look them up. There are less of them than ever today, and they need support to pass the art on to more people so it doesn't die out.
It's the stars man, before charting and map-making became widespread, all the exploration cultures used the stars to traverse the sea. The stars dont change. Well, they do, but so slowly that the difference across millenia is neglible. My own ancestors left records of their own explorations behind the same way.
@@sexyydiva1234 it's easy to understand us, we are all the same, just different now because of the barriers that we built between our islands by other people (colonizers). But we're pretty chill
It took the Polynesians thousands of years. Humans have been in space for maybe 60 years, plus it’s a little bit harder to survive in a spaceship than in a boat. Give it some time!

Listening to this makes me proud that me and my family still follow the indigenous religion/culture of our ancestors and didn't convert to a middle eastern Abrahamic faith.
After listening to this song daily for the last 6months...it has really grown on me. Love this version. My little boy will be dancing around the front room :)

Philippines is actually part of the austronesians, and polynesians came from the same line. so technically, we were once voyagers too, as described in the austronesian migration theory and in our history books of how our ancestors came to be.
