northern thai curry - gaeng om moo

Recently, when my friend Pai (‪@PailinsKitchen‬) came to visit, we had to have a light lunch. Despite the limited preparation time due to baby duties, my pantry, stocked with essentials like lemongrass, galangal, shallots, and garlic, came to the rescue. Seeking a unique culinary experience for Pai, I chose gaeng om, a traditional Northern (Lanna) Thai curry.
Northern Thai cuisine, known for the famous Khao soi, offers a variety of flavors, and gaeng om is a significant water-based curry in this region. It’s commonly found in Northern Thai restaurants and homes. This curry, often confused with the Northeastern (Isan) curry of the same name, differs significantly in taste and preparation in the Lanna style.
