Beavers are so fascinating in so many ways. That they are so social made seeing the rejection from Huckleberry really hard to watch. Those plaintive cries! I teared up when I watched Piya and Justin meet. (The perfect musical accompaniment probably helped).

Same here. My heart broke for poor little Piya when Huckleberry rejected her. Those cries of longing and misery were heart-rending. Justin is a very lucky beaver, he has himself a wonderful companion for life. ❤

I'm so glad to see Piya happy with a new beaver companion, even if it couldn't be Huckleberry! How did you know Justin would accept her and wouldn't react like Huckleberry did?
During the process of introduction, they had protected contact like we had arranged with Huckleberry. Unlike Huckleberry, Justin did not act territorial towards Piya through a divider, so it was much more likely he would be accepting when Piya was allowed to come into his space freely.
@@animalwondersmontana The general principles of animal care modeled on the channel are so incredibly helpful. I've adopted a bunny rabbit (Easter impulse buy by young neighbors, who meant well, and treated the rabbit kindly so far as they were able), and channels like Animal Wonders (and others, including Little Adventures (guinea pigs), Lennon the Bunny, and Amy Sedaris' series of rabbit care videos) have been my guide to making my bunny's adoption a success. Principles like knowing an animal's evolutionary history, the environment in which it evolved, its history under domestication, that shines through over and over again in the videos we see here. Please know that there are animals out there who experience next-level care because of the efforts of content creators like you.

@@animalwondersmontana You know, I already have! Karen (who is a boy, but the little boy who named him didn't know that, so that's his name!) is 99.9% free roam. His "little house" is a medium dog crate identical to the one seen in this video, up on a coffee table, with another coffee table at the entrance as his front porch and "helipad" (we pretend that he's the boss of an offshore oil platform!) It's covered with a grass-green bath towel. He's in there right now, flopped over, on his behavioral enrichment layer of non-clumping cat litter (his real litter box is separate). But sleepy though he is, as soon as I finish this comment, he'll be up and running circles around my feet. Animal Wonders has lots of great animals loved by viewers everywhere, but I've got the best baby bunny in the whole wide world!
@@animalwondersmontana Today, my mom sent me some birthday/Christmas money and I went to Wal-Mart and got "small pet" nail trimmers for my bunny. My show rabbit breeder friend Shelley told me (when she checked Karen out and told me I'd done a good job so far) that I would need to regularly trim Karen's little claws. I've already done that with cats, so I do know how to operate the tool, including the importance of taking care to cut dead tissue only, and not living blood vessels. I just got home, and I haven't really told my bunny yet that she has her very first manicure coming up.... but the nail trimmers came with a nice soft nylon brush just made for grooming small pets, and I might just use that first!
The trimmer/brush set was only around $5. At the same time, even though the weather is getting colder in Kentucky, and my bunny is in no danger of overheating, I still wonder about the temperature of her environment. I had a $5 battery powered digital thermometer, which fell off her cage and broke in November. Wal-Mart had some fancy replacements, but I went with a pair of traditional alcohol bulb thermometers, only $1 apiece, so I can still be mindful of the temperature, even though it's Winter and way not critical!
I confess I also bought a $5 roll of electrical tape, for me. Domestic rabbits are all European, in their wild type. That means every domestic bunny up to now, thinks that every phone and laptop charger is a tree root growing through their warren! It's best to learn to keep electrical cords out of bunny's reach, and there are great UA-cam videos out there about rabbit proofing your house. It has to be done, because our bunnies should be free-roam. Just like us, no bunny wants to spend life in a cage! But a roll of electrical tape, applied with expertise, can buy you some safety when it turns out that your guitar cable (with no dangerous voltage on it) got within chewing range, while you were singing your bunny a lullabye!
All of these bunny life enhancing purchases today cost me just under $11. There are bigger ticket items ahead of me in getting my rescue bunny spayed, making sure that he has his immunizations, etc. But even a small expenditure towards an animal's care can make a difference to their quality of life.
Turning Piya's story into a children's book is a great idea; not only can the zoo sell the book to help with costs, but can show off Piya to everyone... maybe even do some "book signings" with Piya's pawprint!
How to keep Huck from being a "bad guy" for not accepting Piya though?
@@gildedbear5355 I see two possibilities:
1) Draw a bandage on Huckleberry's head and have him be sad and grumpy and forget who she is after she introduced herself repeatedly ("Jessi, why doesn't he remember me?") Then have her explain that Huckleberry hurt his head, so the reader has sympathy for him, and could shift him from antagonist to another relationship character (her loneliness and sickness could be seen as the real antagonists)
2) Not write him in as a character. Piya's had more than her share of troubles to swap him out with another obstacle.
@@captainthorrek262 I like option 1. Huck's always been on his own and has his own issues. Use it as a chance to teach that not every place is a good fit for everybody.

thanks for giving us a rundown on beaver body language when piya was meeting justin for the first time, animal communication is an interest of mine.
Wonderful job at reaching out and finding a home for Piya. I'm sure it's not easy when you're not the solution, but I'm glad you guys do what's best for the animals!
This is something that always makes me appreciate Animal Wonders, caring for the animals' wellbeing as an absolute priority
They'd actually been trying for ages to find a home for Piya because they knew they didn't have the capacity.... apparently there were a lot of orphaned beavers last year & everywhere was overflowing already. Then when Huckleberry didn't bond with her that made it even more of a priority to find the right home, because in this instance they knew AWM wasn't the solution - just the conduit 👍
I'm not crying, you're crying! I'm so glad Piya got the happily ever after she deserves after such a rough start to life, you did a wonderful job caring for her and finding her what sounds like an amazing forever home.
Them meeting literally made me cry, what a gentle interaction!!!! I am so happy these two beavers can be extra happy together.

The fact that Piya [sic?] got to fly was amazing! I thought, not many beavers can say that they've flown at any significant altitude. But then I remembered the project in Idaho in the late 1940s, where beavers (who didn't like being carried on the backs of mules) were parachuted into the wilderness, using WWII parachutes, in an effort to repopulate the species! The beavers flew -- and dropped! -- in crates made of wood that the beavers could eat their way out of, but their handlers ultimately invented a crate that would open itself upon landing. 76 beavers made the jump, in all, and one of the beavers used in development, called Geronimo (what else?) will probably always hold the record for number of solo parachute jumps by a beaver! The idea was ultimately abandoned, but it still goes to show, a beaver will try most anything!
I realize this comes a year after your comment, but that event is of particular interest to me. My late father was born and raised in Northern Idaho during during the '30s-'40s, then went to Uni at the U of I in Moscow, before a stint in the Navy during the Korean War - and ultimately relocated to Western Washington, a few years later into his professional career. I can't help but wonder if perhaps he may have heard of this effort at the time, though I've not been aware of it until just now. Out of curiosity, what part of Idaho did this attempt at beaver repopulation take place in?

Beavers are absolutely amazing creatures. They have beautiful family lives and are phenomenal for an ecosystem. So many species become reliant on the ponds they create with their dams. Please be kind to them!!

It probably helped that Piya was no longer a toddler but was becoming a beautiful young lady beaver approaching full sexual maturity, so Justin became interested and accepting of her. Hopefully they have become a happy couple with a family of little furballs of their own!

Piya and Justin are not on exhibit and we're giving them space to just be, so we're specifically not sharing the zoo's name. :)
I also live close to MA and I would love to go see them on exhibit if and when they are put on exhibit. Franklin Park Zoo is what I'm guessing and hoping for!
