Lloyd, I like the cedar shavings to store graft wood. I have had fungus growth on the graft wood with other moistening mediums. Hopefully the cedar shavings will suppress fungus growth.
I like this method, of all, the best, I think. The tightness from the duct tape is without comparison. Probably get good cambium contact. How long from scion to nut?
I have not used it on chestnut. There is a modified chip bud graft that I have seen that is supposed to be very successful on chestnut. The “chip” is actually a small section of scion wood. All is wrapped with plastic tape and sealed with parafilm.
@@PuckPuggy Thank you for replying. I am going to try the inlay bark graft method on a couple of 2 to 3 inch truck chestnuts. However, Would the modified chip bud graft method you mentioned work on a 3 inch diameter trunk chestnut? Also, could you give me a link to how this works ? All the best.
The fellow who first showed me the graft on chestnut was a grad student from China. He would take a short section of scion wood and cut the side and end like you would for a chip Bud. However he then cut the stock down one side and left a slot for the chip end. So this was like a “chip side graft” if that makes sense? Part of the scion was left sticking up above the stock. I can’t find a video.
This is much longer than it needs to be but shows several different methods. It looks like they have used the bark graft successfully on chestnut. ua-cam.com/video/A162sq0GLag/v-deo.html
You can do a different type of graft on a smaller tree. (See the 4 flap graft videos) or you could use smaller wood and do this graft. Have also placed several grafts higher up in the tree. One thing I did not show in this video is that I now use parafilm grafting tape to cover the scions.
Excellent. Thank you.

Well done.
So simple!
Have you tried the same on walnuts?
Fantastic work, thanks for sharing your knowledge 🍃 ☘ 🌿
Anyone know what the tree looks like today?

It depends on the age of the rootstock. Usually just a few years.

Neat method. Can I use it to graft chestnut trees? Have you done that?

@@ridanuwayhid9494 The method I mentioned was used on small nursery trees. I’ll try to find a video on that method.

How effective is this in comparison to the four flap method?
I have extremely good success with this method.
Very cool.

Do you seal the open cut?
I cover the cut surfaces with aluminum foil and then cover everything with a plastic bag as demonstrated.

Hey my friend! Whats the diference between grafting an older tree like you did and grafting a younger one (20 centimeters)?
