  • Welcome once again to another "Coffee With Zeo"! Today we look at what I'd like to see in a possible NGS successor - a Phantasy Star Online 3 if you will.

I often find myself thinking about how to address the differences with people when it comes to levels of difficulty and stress. For some people, stress is a necessity to really engage them, but for other people, stress and engagement aren't linked at all. People in that category have enough stress to put up with as it is, and don't need it when they're trying to unwind and have fun, but that doesn't automatically mean they just want everything to be easy-street either, contrary to what many people believe.
Many players will still want to play at a high level, just with more options for error-mitigation. A way to address this could be a player's class choice being able to adapt to the kind of game they want to experience, but players may also want to choose a specific weapon for their character. To that end, I think there might be an interesting way to replace the under-utilized subclass system that combines two main classes not designed to work together with one that can mix and match a player's choice of weapons and playstyle to the desired gameplay experience.
What I imagine is actually making the 3 successor classes into subclasses, allowing each main class to be played as a Hero, Phantom or Etoile variant. Each one of those classes corresponds to different playstyles that could apply to anyone regardless of their weapon choice, with Hero engaging head-on, Phantom focusing on evasion and debuffs, and Etoile having a lot more error mitigation and support options. Those principles could apply to any chosen weapon type. I'm also a huge fan of the 'shift' mechanic phantom artes and Et wand had, and they could reduce the number of PA variants by using that mechanic to make each weapon have a standard PA, and a style-shifted version, which would differ based on subclass choice.
I think this would work better than trying to design all these classes to function independently, making the subclass and sub-weapons increasingly useless. It's too hard to balance the individual functionality with the huge number of class combos the way it is now, and we're just getting funneled into playing weapons the same way. Having the Shift mechanic would also make it easier to have lots of options bound to a limited number of buttons on a controller.
I agree on story too. Some people said they liked ep4+ being wacky and unpredictable, but I also found them incredibly derivative, and I'd rather they show what makes Phantasy Star lore interesting rather than abandon it for something else. There's a feeling I got from the old PSO story and the Oracle storyline in 2 that I just don't get from other games. I think a solid main story is crucial too, because even if people don't play it at all (and it should go back to being optional), it still provides so much of the critical backdrop that makes games feel like you're doing more than just pressing buttons, something people take for granted.

I think what you're thinking of for "buying the game" is what's known as a lifetime subscription in other MMOs, especially since you put importance on people still being able to play for free if they want. That's what Star Trek Online does, and it works remarkably like what you described. Actually, a lot of what could help fix PSO2's current problems can be found in STO, though it too has its issues, but I've only once had an encounter of the RMT kind in STO during the over two years I've played. With that one, it was someone sending me an in-game mail message, which I promptly reported as that spam it is. Meanwhile in PSO2NGS I can't even go a few days without seeing a bot in the lobby at Central City, they even get to Kvaris from time to time. Wonder what that tells you about STO versus PSO2 where one is almost RMT activity free from what I've seen, while the other isn't?
As for what I'd like to see... I'd like to see instanced open world and randomized maps in PSO3 or PSU2 that you travel to by ship cutscene, with a more open Lobby that has a proper Casino in addition to a few others things like a cafe and actual shopping center to give the lobby a feel of actual life in it. I also enjoy being able to talk to NPCs, and would like it if we can have them reappear when going back to older parts of the story so we can get bits of dialogue we miss in the course of going from scene to scene. Sometimes you can get some interesting tid-bits from talking to NPCs, and I really miss that in NGS, but I do not miss being able to miss or not be able to see NPCs when switching to older story segments. At least ones that can be missed, like Gettumhult from Episode 1 and Hitsugi once you complete Episode 4. I personally wouldn't mind time travel shenanigans as I loved how it was used in PSO2, but I get ya, that gives the game it's own unique identity from the other PSOs. I would also like to have more races to play as, including the oft requested Beast Race and straight up anthro/furry races. For those reading this, yes, furries have been seen in PSO games before, and some have been playable characters even.
An improvement I would like to see in a PSO3 or PSU2 is to have the creative space/player rooms be customizable as they are in NGS, but with much more ease of editing rather than the frustrating and demotivating controls in the game currently. Something like what is done in Halo's Forge Mode is what I would like to see in NGS and the next PSO. Editing and moving things was so silky smooth from what I remember in the few times I messed around with that mode. Also, instead of the current storage system where you have to rent additional spaces, I would prefer a full on unlocked bank that can be extended to the multiple thousands of item slots that can be done here, but you buy them only once for the shared bank between characters on your account.

as the time pass , i realize a setting like Shadow Raiders ( nomad planets)would be better to be set in PSO3 or PSU2 .
Another thing i want for the story its to be clear about the scale of the setting.
For now in PSO2 we never knew if the 5 planets from EP1 to 3 are set or not in the same galaxy.

Not sure what would want out of third one it could cool being able maybe make some of the dungeon or some like neverwinter or maybe have some choices of things to say with a little more impact though not needed.

The game not went beyond EP1 yet. We didn't get Custom PAs/Techs yet also. Dreaming about what's might gonna be 6-8-10 years (if NGS even survives that long) is kinda bold.

It would be great if it broke away from the "modern gaming" meta of fleecing players out of every cent they can and "FOMO rigatoni" content loops.

    PSO 3 Class ideas
    Bouncer uses both weapons simultaneously
Gunner & Slayer are mixed into a single class thats a fragile Speedster with 2 Gunblades
Magic classes are merged into one that uses a staff for Physical attacks and talis for Magic attacks
Fighter hunter & Braver are mostly the same

There seems to be a deliberate effort to bury PSO of yore under all the weeb stuff. Guys like us are slowly becoming further and further removed from their target audience. Yeah I hear ya though.

I feel like it's a little too soon to start talking about a successor just yet. But when it finally does happen, my requests are very simple...I just a return to PSO's roots. I want an overarching story without a particular "main" character like PSO was. Your character was a space mercenary trying to figure out wtf was going on on Ragol working alongside other Hunters. Other NPCs and characters would show up giving more context to the story but your character wasn't just there following them around like they do with Manon and Aina.
Make rare hunting fun again. Finding a red box was a huge thing back then. And get rid of the gear treadmill. We need more horizontal progression gear in games. Be able to continously build on it to keep it relevant. Add special skills exclusive to that weapon like the Tsumakiri J-Sword or the Heaven Punisher.

Whats the point of b2p if its still f2p? Its just an extra non refundable tax. If I'm going to pay up front just to play a free to play game i need a reason to pay for it like offline mode.
edit: the only people this would help is sega. you still have to do gachas, still need premium, and sega will still throw micro transactions at people. this means you only added a pay wall to keep players from playing.

any successor should be at least 4years if developement time. have a beta for 6 months then release a complete game. this game is a failure. sega ruined the game for me. i do pop in as nostalgia is a bitch a cant get away from. are we gonna do the medievil greek thing yet. space medusa and steampunk minotaur would be nice.

I just thought this would be a fun idea given the mixed opinions about NGS over the past couple years and if they ever wanted to do something different with a PSO3. But, given current industry trends, a full-fledged PSO3 is liable to be some low-effort bullshit mobile game while they intentionally bury old PSO/PSU and its predecessors.
