  • On Friday, April 29 at 5:27 p.m. ET, Falcon 9 launched 53 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
This was the sixth flight for the Falcon 9 first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched GPS III Space Vehicle 04, GPS III Space Vehicle 05, Inspiration4, Ax-1, and now two Starlink missions.

It's my understanding that it's an AI (or at least some advanced machine learning) that handles the landings. If that's true, it probably learns from every mission and gets better at landing with each success. Heck, truth be told, SpaceX vessels are already like the self driving cars of spaceflight. To get to the space station, you just have to tell it where you want to go and it'll take you there. Usually without human intervention. I think this is the reason their launches are almost always on time and go off so smoothly. The AI has just gotten good at being a rocket. :D

And just last year F9 surpassed the total numer of launches of Atlas 5, at about 85 at the time. And Atlas started launching in 2002 and is one of the most flown rockets out there. Soyuz and it's 50 iterations does still hold the record but Soyuz 2 and FG, the configurations flying as long as Atlas V have a combined 200 launchs, so F9 will beat modern day Soyuz soon.

How amazing is that landing!! Just falling down towards the beautiful blue ocean, with a clear view of the tiny thin atmosphere at 100KM. You can just see how close we actually are constantly to outer space, the atmosphere looks so thin!! But when that 1st stage is falling down to the ocean and then all the sudden we see this landing pad, it's incredible!!! Thank you SpaceX for doing all this!!! We live in the best times of human history so far!!!!

I have watched almost every landing of a booster, not all live, and still get a thrill to see it right in the bullseye! I know just enough about engineering to realize how little I actually know but it’s just an amazing thing to see it happen every time. Remember the people that said you can’t do it? Where are they now?

Awesome! Can’t wait for Starship. Taking time but something so sophisticated should be made carefully.

Here is the stat that really brings it home. As of this launch, a total of 94 previously-flown Falcon 9 first stages have been launched (mostly as standalone, a couple as Heavy side boosters). So to have launched the same amount of payload, without reuse they would have had to build an additional 94 first stages and a whopping 846 additional Merlin engines! Plus would have none in inventory for upcoming missions.
