It was first flown on Dec. 22, 1964, and first delivered to Beale AFB, in in Calif., in Jan., 1966. It was retired on Jan., 26, 1990! On July 28, 1976 a SR-71 set two world records for its class. An absolute speed record of 2163.197 MPH, at an absolute altitude record of 85,068.997 feet!
From 80,000 get it could survey 1,000,000

My father for years worked on the SR-71 and could never tell us about it for the longest time. Every now and then, he would call us from his work in Landcaster California and let us know that skunkworks was taking it out for testing. We would go outside and wait for that thing to streak across the dessert floor. It would buzz right over our house. What an amazing thing to see. As soon as you saw it come into view, it was going out of view. It would rattle the house. Until you see it, you wouldn't believe it. Such a beautiful jet.

When I was flying in the Navy I took off behind a Blackbird in Okinawa. It went to full blower during its roll and I'll never forget how its afterburner reflected off the runway at rotation. Truly awesome bird. And yes, there was a tanker waiting for it above the air station (their gear wasn't rated for full fuel capacity on the ground).

I believe they could take off with full fuel load and did at times early in the program, but it was hard on the tires needing higher roll speed and also dangerous being so heavy so slow at such low altitude and unable to fly should they lose an engine that this was not done routinely.
I worked in the J-58 overhaul section at P&W and this was by far my favorite motor...just a beast.

It actually left with a full tank but it leaked...refilled in the air and once it hit a curtain speed the plane would heat up AND "stretch" enough to seal the tanks and the rest of the bird.

    • @recoilrob324
      @recoilrob324 7 місяців тому +11

@@MG2577 Yes...they DID leak on the ground, but also rarely tried to take off with a full fuel load due to the issues mentioned above. There was no reason to stress the tires and risk the aircraft with a heavy fuel load when they had a tanker orbiting above ready to fill them up for the mission.
Also the fuel used to start, taxi then climb to altitude was considerable so refueling before starting the mission increased the range by quite a bit.

Need a thousand fighters,,, need 10 Blackbirds. Cost is not a factor! I could only guess but , all speeds are the safe speeds for our fighters to cruise at. Technically fighters also outrun missiles if they're outside the MAR, as long as they can dive to the deck and give the missiles a few turns they can run it out of energy before it reaches them. The MAR (Minimum Abort Range) depends on the missile and several other factors, but the MAR for an AIM-120C-7 is of the order of 10 nautical miles on the deck, even though its range might be 65 or more nautical miles. The cool thing about the Blackbird is, it can outrun missiles at high altitude.
