Yeah it was probably the baddest plane

It is from the future...
True story, blackbird pilot contacted tower and requested 60,000 feet and tower replied “sure if you can climb to that altitude it’s all yours” pilot replied “I want to descend to that altitude”

I am a fan of airplanes and the SR-71 represents one of the greatest aircrafts ever made. What a job Kelly Johnson did on this thing. First saw it years ago at the Air & Space museum in Virginia and was awestruck by the length of the Pratt & Whitney engines.
I miss the Air and Space Shows! I remember going to a couple held at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA. That was the only time I was speechless for 4 hours!
My dad was Kelly Johnson’s doctor. We had a big signed photo from him of the SR 71 on the wall in our house
I had the rare and wonderful privilege of seeing her live at Nellis AFB. Gorgeous plane, amazingly built, and she flies like basically nothing else. The only real reason they stopped using her is they didnt NEED spy planes anymore, they had satellites. Damn Shame though... such a beaut.

and yes, its primary "weapons" system was that Pratt & Whitney engine...
I'm looking forward to the new hypersonic aircraft that's coming, shame that we lost that race to Russia and China, but we can redeem ourselves by building an aircraft that can leave the SR-71 in the dust

The SR-71 Black Bird (fitting name) was designed without computers, just slide rulers and Great minds! It was way ahead of its time, and still is! It was first flown on Dec. 22, 1964, and first delivered to Beale AFB, in in Calif., in Jan., 1966. It was retired on Jan., 26, 1990! On July 28, 1976 a SR-71 set two world records for its class. An absolute speed record of 2163.197 MPH, at an absolute altitude record of 85,068.997 feet!

We would go outside and wait for that thing to streak across the dessert floor. It would buzz right over our house. What an amazing thing to see. As soon as you saw it come into view, it was going out of view. It would rattle the house. Until you see it, you wouldn't believe it. Such a beautiful jet.

When I was flying in the Navy I took off behind a Blackbird in Okinawa. It went to full blower during its roll and I'll never forget how its afterburner reflected off the runway at rotation. Truly awesome bird. And yes, there was a tanker waiting for it above the air station (their gear wasn't rated for full fuel capacity on the ground).
El sr 71 les bailo sabroso al los su 27 los dejo viendo lejos ..😮
I believe they could take off with full fuel load and did at times early in the program, but it was hard on the tires needing higher roll speed and also dangerous being so heavy so slow at such low altitude and unable to fly should they lose an engine that this was not done routinely.
I worked in the J-58 overhaul section at P&W and this was by far my favorite motor...just a beast.
It actually left with a full tank but it leaked...refilled in the air and once it hit a curtain speed the plane would heat up AND "stretch" enough to seal the tanks and the rest of the bird.
@@MG2577 Yes...they DID leak on the ground, but also rarely tried to take off with a full fuel load due to the issues mentioned above. There was no reason to stress the tires and risk the aircraft with a heavy fuel load when they had a tanker orbiting above ready to fill them up for the mission.
Also the fuel used to start, taxi then climb to altitude was considerable so refueling before starting the mission increased the range by quite a bit.

@@maddhatter3564, Yea, no one really knows! They say it can bounce off the top of earth atmosphere, but cant make it into space! It ain't going fast enough to leave ! Then , speed comes from a few different factors. After burn brings the temp up to high on a fighter because of the materials used in a fighter for expenses! Need a thousand fighters,,, need 10 Blackbirds. Cost is not a factor! I could only guess but , all speeds are the safe speeds for our fighters to cruise at. But need be to get out of a hostile environment, they could keep it full afterburner, go from mach 2, hit mach 3 , fry the engines, and still not hurt the airframe. My father who passed away a couple of years ago @ 73 years old was a Col USAF/North American Aerospace Defense Command 33 yrs. He would be the first person to debrief the Habu pilots at Guam back in the late 70s.
My father never talked much about his life in the military except for one occasion where an incident happened to one of the pilots on a flight somewhere over the South China Sea. Dad said that the plane's engines & air frame were damaged beyond repair due to the pilot pushing the plane far beyond mach 3.8
The pilot claimed a wrecking ball size sphere was not only chasing him but trying to force him into a dive at 80,000'

The Russian jets did their job. The SR-71 was in a precarious spot throughout all of it. When heat seeking missiles are fired from the ground the SR-71 blackbird has to evade. During all of this footage the SR-71 blackbird was in no place to evade anything even as it tore away it could have been blown up easily.

I miss the US that built the SR 71. I don’t like the US that makes woke Disney shows.

It is not “woke” that is the problem. It is the constant focus on the 90-day financials. We outsource our manufacturing expertise to China and Mexico, and nobody is willing to take on a truly hard engineering project like designing and manufacturing the SR-71. It might fail! Then how would we explain it to the shareholders! We can’t do that! The country needs more Kelly Johnson and less Donald Trump.
👌👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍
@@mwaldyke You're comparing a government employed aeronautical engineer to a former/future(?) President. Kelly Johnson had NOTHING to do with the financials of his projects, so your neo political comment is beyond stupid. If funding is the issue, then say we need more Reagan's and less Biden/Harris. Technically fighters also outrun missiles if they're outside the MAR, as long as they can dive to the deck and give the missiles a few turns they can run it out of energy before it reaches them. The MAR (Minimum Abort Range) depends on the missile and several other factors, but the MAR for an AIM-120C-7 is of the order of 10 nautical miles on the deck, even though its range might be 65 or more nautical miles. The cool thing about the Blackbird is, it can outrun missiles at high altitude.
