this video brought tears to my eyes, it made me think of my ancestors journey from Spain, through Portugal and the Netherlands, until they settled down in Sweden. We used our spanish surname until the early 20th-century but because of the situation of the time, it was later transformed into a swedish one. In Spain there are still castles with my family's coat of arms above the entrence, they haven't belonged to the family for centuries, but they are a strong reminder of where we came from.
I wish to honor my ancestor Doña Gracia Nasi Mendes. It is a lie that it is an Italian name. It is Hebrew. The family has two branches; one in Italy and one in Turkey. Gracia Mendes and Joseph Nasi pertain to the Turkish branch which I am a member of. My great grandmother was Rachel Nassi born in Ankara or Constantinople I believe in a small Jewish quarter. She spoke Ladino and spread the oral tradition of my ancestor to us.
she was a portuguese marrano, born in lisbon, from spanish jews ancestors. although already a rich family, their husband actually became fabulously rich dealing with the monarch of portugal. when portugal was the richest country in the world per capita in the discoveries age.she had to escape to italy and constatinople because of the inquisiton.
Hello Daniel. we are distant cousins then. I am descendant of Beneditto de Nasi who was a cousin to Dona Gracia Nasi. This is the line that includes Amelia Lanier, the "Dark Lady" of Shakespeare. So, I am from the Venetian branch. Espero que Usted puede hablar Ladino? Yo canto canciones Ladinas en mi templo. Hola de Texas.
a great character, my ultimate model for being a real woman, jew, and leader. I don't know if I should call her a feminist, but in my terms she surely was. thanks for this film, a tribute to agreat woman in jewish history.
She was the quintessentially Jewish personality..I think , the skills she had were exceptional! Let's be proud of our legacy to these wonderful people : The Sefaradim
Donna Gracia I hope my daughter's have the strength you had. How you sent ships to bring your people to safety is something that brings tears to my eyes. You loved am Israel you did live just for yourself.
SPANISH HISTORY The noble Spanish Jewish lady Donna Gracia was her Jewish name and Beatrice de Lune was her Crypto-Jewish Marreno name. She was a woman of extraordinary beauty, culture and wealth. Many thousands of Marranos and other persecuted Jews called her by no other name than "Our Angel." Donna Gracia was from a Spanish noble family of Benveniste from Spain. They fled to Portugal after fleeing from the Spanish Inquisition. Herself from a rich home, she had married the even richer Francis
Thanks so much.My mother's bloodline can be traced to Portugal and her Great Grandmother was a Jewish woman, named C.Gutner (we have no first name). We do know that the word Israelita is on documents and we know the Gutners (not Gunter) came to Spain & Portugal after Rome fell. They began leaving around 1812,in droves to America and Argentina. We always wondered what Mom was-she had heavy thick black shiny hair, deep dark brown eyes and buttery golden tan skin.We are all blonde and fair.It was so exciting to find out where she came from.
Amazing. my mother's last name is Leyva which is Sephardic. They went to live amongst the the Mixtec Indians in Oaxaca because they continued the killing and torture of Jews in Mexico. If you want to learn more about the Jews in Mexico please refer to the book by Anna Lanyon, "Fire and Song"
very interesting, these themes should find much more spaces in hispanic studies, it is an important element to understand that culture, esoecially if you are not sephardim, nor spanish -like myself who looks to all this from latinamerica -it is also part of OUR culture... shalom dear friends
I don't think so. However there is a dramatic movie which tells a similar history. Not the very same off course, but certainly it is somewhat based on Dona Gracia life. As far as I can remember, the movie has a German name "Verrat im Venidig" (Treason in Venice), and the English title... (just wait) "Secret Passage" (2004). Sorry I tried to add the sumary but it was not supported because was too long. Look at that imdb adress and search under that name and you will find it
I would like any clues to Dona Gracia Nasi's childhood. I have many books on her life and her time period, but nothing that mentions Beatrice de Luna (her Christian name) as a child.
The reason why there are e no books mentioning her Xn name is because it was a pseudo name. The Jewish people want the real woman’s name & history not the one she was FORCED to take.
Podría tener gran difusión entre mis amigos y familiares, si existiera una versión en castellano (español). De todos modos es muy muy bueno!!. MARIO A. LIPONEZKY CADOCHE
There are all kinds of items in this video that do not comport with the original research in Cecil Roth's foundational work on Dona Gracia Nasi. The very first image that is shown, the famous coin,--is of Gracia Chica--"Little Gracia"--the niece of Dona Gracia Nasi. That is the least of it. Gracia's connection with the Sultan was not a payoff, nor does Roth mention anything about Gracia having had a hand in building any community in Eretz Yisrael except Tiberias. Check facts.
windcrys mary they were fabulousy rich, after the king of portugal, and Casa de Braganca, they were probably the richest family in portugal, able to buy the all cargo of pepper from our caravelas, they do the trade between portugal and dutch republic. but then she had to escape to dutch, italy and constatinopla because of the inquisiton.
Being a Sephardic Jew myself and Rabbi of a Messianic Congregation in Tampa, Florida. I thank God that I now know who I truly am in God! Through the Holy Spirit I have come to know my true heritage in Yeshua Messiah and embracing my Hebrew Roots, I can truly relate to this this video in a deeper way! I pray that many of the millions of Spanish people will also come to embrace their Hebrew roots and know their rich history. Be Blessed and Shalom!
@ukusapillage yes it was an important financial centre, and much of that is because of the jewish community, but do you really think they wanted to stay there once the city was under spanish control? you need to think that less then a century earlier they had been expelled from Spain and later from Portugal. The spanish crown had taken much of their possessions already, of course they didn't want to go through that again, so they replaced their businesses...wouldn't you have done the same?

By the way, at the very end, they write that she was buried on Mount Oils, which obviously needs to be Mount of Olives.
