Rest in peace, Duke. Thank you for being part of my childhood. One of the most underrated movies ever. Was always on Monday night after WWF Monday Night Raw in the late 90s in the summer.
De Niro is great on that movie no doubt, but I loved Mr. Grodin acting also. But nobody mentions that. Actually Grodin was at the level of any actor. But then, is only my particular opinion.
Every character, every line, every scene in this movie is pure epic. Once you see it, you want to see it for the second time, and more, until you remember everything and forget how many times you've watched it.
oh my, best buddy movie ever. and this final scene when they say goodbye and De Niro looks around... brings tears to my eyes now :) RIP Duke, what a fantastic actor Charles Grodin. See you ...
A Lot of actors get intimidated by Deniro. Charles Grodin held his ground and actually succeeded in making fun of him. Poked holes in Deniros tough guy veneer.
I always liked how Danny Elfman put the resolving chord at 0:22 to show Grodin was gone. An absolute gem of a movie, mixing comedy and drama with exciting action. A brief and effective bromance between Grodin and De Niro. Better now than when first released.
Like how the way Grodin is in the wind just seconds after they say goodbye, knowing that there is still the reality of a price on his head.. And that final musical note that accents that finality when DeNiro turns to take one last look..
This just reinforces that, at bottom, the Duke was an operator, always one step ahead, who knew quite well how to take care of himself and would do just fine. He had to disappear that way. It was his nature.
My best friend and I were ushers for this film in NYC summer 1988 (we were only 18 years old) and we were handling sold out seats and lines for this classic film. We caught the midnight run for Midnight Run that night. I remember I fell asleep halfway through the film because I was so tired but I could always remember my best friends laughter throughout the film. This film always represented both our characters, (definitely a best buddy film). I miss my best friend Mark who passed away several years back. That scene when Charles is there and then is not when De Niro turns around always brought a tear to my eye because it reminds me of when Mark was there and then he was not. Rest in peace Mark and Charles Grodin. "See You In The Next Life".💖
What you describe in your short comment give me a sense of melancholy that fully reminds me of a friend that is not with us anymore. Your description of working while that movie was on shows your capacity to capture feelings that this movie generate. Well, I always admire any person that mentions a situation, a feeling that I could identify with. In that sense I was lucky to find your comment and watch a great movie. I watch it once in a while. Have a nice life!
Every component of this film works so well and is such a joy. De Niro and Grodin quite rightly get the praise but special mention to Danny Elfman for such a terrific score.
this movie could have had the best sequel, Jack and John as friends from the beginning.. but on the other hand, it has one of the best endings, so it could have also spoiled it
i've always seen it as: the duke was jack's angel....he could have escaped anytime he wanted....he was there to guide jack through his regret, put him on the right path....
Robert De Niro is over 70 years old, but he's still fine. It may be because he can play not only serious roles but also comical roles. Because, among the movies he appeared in, this movie, "Midnight Run", is included. Charles Grodin, you changed De Niro in this movie. At the time of parting, you didn't just give De Niro money, but something that no one could buy with money. In the same way, you gave us something. It may be courage, justice, love, or the hope of being named Next Life. Anyway, thank you. Peace in the Next Life💐💓
No, it's the other way around, they made the song out of the instrumental : "By the time of the album's recording, frontman Danny Elfman had become a famed film composer, particularly in collaboration with Tim Burton. Wait a second! He would have made it? No, he wouldn't. Beyond the $300,000 in $1,000 notes, it's apparent that he had no other money to pay for cab fare. And he certainly wouldn't have made it by walking to there. Now, it's plausible that Eddie would have covered the fare if Jack went ahead and delivered The Duke to him, so that's the only way I could figure it.
What is Jack going to do about all the cars he wrecked and the two bad guys in the helicopter he killed. Serrano is going to try and organize a revenge hit even from behind bars too. Jack's in deep trouble.
Also his ex-wife car left over at Amarillo in front of the coffee shop and the keys went down into the sewage! That's even a bigger problem too , his ex-wife's husband is a cop!

What is art? Art, by definition, is the pursuit of beauty. This film is pure art. It is so beautifully executed that it can heal depression.
Got that right
it's so true, this was true male bonding at the end
Don't go overboard with it
See ya in the next life!
It's brilliant.
Overlooked movie, and I love every second of it.
Me to 😊
One best comedy a movi is a master robert de niro
Underrated? Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs up!! Hardly underrated.

AGREE!, what a screeplay!
“See you in the next life” RIP Charles Grodin
I love this movie. The one liners and jokes never get old.
Movies this satisfying just don't get made anymore.
Because nobody cares about our satisfaction anymore, just virtue signaling.
Hollywood is fucking junk today!!. And I am a film lover. They dont know how to write they don't know how to make good films

A classic! Great 80's movie with a fantastic cast...love it!

I made the exact same remark about the piano at 0:22, it's really there to tell us "he's gone".
Very touching.
Beautiful..just beautiful
Looks like I'm walkin'.
Bobby and Charlie in their prime. God bless the 80s
See ya in the next life Charles Grodin (1935-2021) 😢😢😢 you were one of the best!!

More poignant after Charles’ passing

Agreed!
Great movie, awesome ending. Kind of sad that their adventure had to end, they could have been good friends if they had facebook back then :)
Maybe in another life?
Fuck facebook
@@GamedogLounge good observation
It hasn't aged one bit. As great of a movie as ever
R.I.P Mr Charles Grodin and Mr Yaphet Kotto. See you in the next life......
Looks like im walkin. Could be my favorite line of every movie I've ever watched in the past 40 years. I don't even know why
My favourite movie of all time. This scene gives me chills. After walking out that door, Jack is a different man. Forever.
I just saw this on Netflix and it is one of my new favorite movies.Great plot emotional music and great characters just absolutely love this flick.
I was born the year it came out. And I never saw it till I was fourteen years old. And I love this movie. Midnight Run is my favorite movie of 1988.

This is a all time classic movie.
Top 10 movie in my book. Absolutely the best
Don’t make a sequel... the original will stand the test of time!
Absolute perfection...
A movie really dear to my heart. De Niro and Grodin ... simply fantastic and touching.
looks like i'm walkin' !
For me, I couldn't improve on anything in this movie, anything! A perfect movie I never get tired of watching.
The Taxi driver should've got nominated for an Oscar from he delivered his line(s). Awesome 🎬 🎞 🎥
Fucking masterpiece, 80's forever.
This sure beats all the "funny comedies" DeNiro has been doing lately. He seems to take everything that comes his way.
God compare this masterpiece to that grandad one he did with that midget man. Opening scene he was master-baiting god it’s heartbreaking.
When De Niro turns to look a last time at the Duke....the piano tells us, "he's gone!".
Always loved it.
Sadly when they both pass this scene will be much more impactful :( and this video will be visited a lot.
Oh yeah.
RIP to The Duke
“See you in the next life”
"I would have made it.." and "seems like I'm walking" were so epic. Bob De Niro is so wholesome

Świetny film. Doskonała muzyka.
Beautifully done final scene. DeNiro was good in this. He and Grodin played off well against each other. Not one poor performance in the film.
One of best scenes from the movie in my opinion, the look Robert De Niro gives before walking away. Rest In Peace Charles Grodin.
Rest in peace and travel well, the amazing Charles Grodin.

A genuine classic.

Nuanced and subtle.

Superb film, so long Charles
I like how even though he got all that money he still couldn't get a taxi and had to end up walking. Great ending to a great movie

The Duke leaves him with one last little inconvenience -- a money belt full of thousands, none of which he can use for a cab ride.
Like a gentle warm end to one chapter to start another almost midnight cowboy vibe ? Anyone?
