Connemara Black attack

  • I've mentioned John Maclean's Connemara Black flies tied palmered as bob flies before but today they were on fire and I was catching a wee trout nearly every other cast for a while around lunchtime. Clearly the trout are as impressed with them as I am. It was just about the first warm day of the year and even the wind wasn't especially cold so it was a fantastic day out chasing the brown trout. The fish in this lough are tiny, but that isn't the point as it is all about a day out and some sport.
I've never even met John, though hopefully I can change that soon, and have no connection other than he ties great flies for me but if you are on facebook be sure to check out his page and take a look at his flies:

Another great video, Philip. Great to see the flies doing the business. Many Thanks for mentioning my flies, it is greatly appreciated.

The Connemara Blacks were really doing the job John, I only showed a short period of actually moving/catching fish in the video but I had a lot of fish, they kept coming on for 15 minutes and going off again so if I'd stayed all day it is hard to know how many would have come to the fly! There appeared to be big olives hatching now and again so amazing that a black fly was doing the job.

Nice videos, there is another lake above this one. Last time there was bigger fish than in this one. Keep them videos coming🎣🎣🎣

Thank you Daniel, the wee lough above this one is now very much weeded in and is pretty much unfishable but you are correct that many years ago it did produce the occasional big fish. The last time I was up there it was full of very tiny little trout about 3 inches long.

Thank you Richard, I'm amazed anyone likes my videos as they only started out as a personal recollection of the day and went on UA-cam so a few mates could see them. However it is great that others enjoy them.

Those Connemara blacks look like they did the trick, there was a great action packed 5 minute spell there!

Things really got going for a while so I stopped for lunch as there's only so many fish you need to catch in a day. After lunch I was still getting a lot of fish but then it tailed off and just went dead again. Needless to say all the fish aren't in the video as there's only so much of that people can take. Interesting they way they can switch on and off sometimes. I think the Connemara Blacks will be my fave bob fly for this season and they do combine pretty much all of the features of a good bob fly so they are perfect for the job. If there is a chance they might get a day out on salmon as well to see how they work for that.

Quite a successful day! I appreciate the quick releases, but sharing a short glimpse of the fish when you bring them to hand would be a bonus. Thanks.

You are right Joe, to be honest that was a bit of an error on my part as I kind of forgot about the bank and so thought that the camera on my chest would see the fish as I released them. Didn't quite work out like that.

Lovely introduction and titling. And a nice day out with the browns.

Thank you Richard, I put together some music with a good strong beat and thought it would be ideal for some titles just for a laugh. However I might keep them. It was a lovely day out and really the first mild day of the year so it was nice to fish in a shirt and just to spend most of the time sitting around enjoying the sun.

I fish in the northern highlands of Scotland, and the Connemara is one of my favourite flies.

I mostly fish on the Isle of Lewis Gerald, but occasionally in Northern Ireland, and the Connemara Black has done me well over the years. John is tying these ones as bob flies and not only does it give them more presence but they really do make good bob flies so this is a new use of the Connemara Black for me.

So, it seems I missed it. Did you catch the odd fish then? Lovely day. A cuppa tea is always a good thing. Myself though, If I don't catch anything in the first hour or so I'm inclined to try something different. I've been known to visit my local fishmonger at the end of the day. Can't go home empty handed now can we?

Thank you Fred :-) In view of the fact these were always intended to be my equivalent of a "holiday album" that just happened to have video it does seem a little mad to have titles! However while it is fun I will keep doing it and we will see how it goes from there.

They just seemed to come on for a while Robert and that palmered Connemara Black was about the only thing they were having! I had one fish, probably the biggest of the day, on a Barvas Crippler but that was the only one that didn't come to the Connemara Black.

I keep telling my wife when I say I'm fishing, I'm actually untangling leaders. Lovely flies indeed,Philip.

On the day I was the same myself Steve, I just didn't include it in the video as it would have become a bit tedious. Especially when casting into the wind on relatively light leaders and with quite bushy flies tangles come my way, the truth is if I could cast better it wouldn't happen no matter the conditions but such is life. John, who ties the flies, is a loch angler himself and he's experimenting a bit and coming up with some really nice flies that seem to work very well. You can have a look at lots of pictures on his facebook page if you do facebook: facebook.com/John-Maclean-Flies-935590369978262 I should highlight that I've no connection with John other than that I like his flies and like to give credit to people doing something interesting, I've never even met him.

I was the same last season! Couldn't catch a fish for some reason. This year has been a bit better so fingers crossed it will pick up for you. If you are interested in UK fishing, and something extremely different from what I do, then a chap called Chris Matthews has a great channel about fishing tiny streams in the south west of England. Also check out a channel called wildfisher where Fred is having a cast, mostly upstream dries and nymphs, in the east of Scotland. Both these people fish in a different universe to me :-) chris: ua-cam.com/channels/yO4pLVBKLA2bKE9gc6O-LQ.html Fred: ua-cam.com/users/wildfisher

@@caorach3354 thanks for links get a coffee and I'm sure to check them out. I don't go with attitude I'll get lots of fish but situation I'm in now can't get one or a bite even a jump I'm disheartened if only get one to keep me encouraged but still early days in season think if I was to look back in my diary June is a good month for me. I was even at a fishery other day and blanked haha

@@scotlandssherlockpiper551 I really do get that - you don't expect fish every time out but you do expect one or two now and again. Hopefully when things warm up a bit you will get some joy otherwise it can become a bit depressing. However, I really do think it happens to us all and we get bad days, or months, or even whole seasons. If you look my videos from last season you will see that there aren't too many actual fish in them and I fished in Scotland and Ireland across a range of lochs and rivers but basically caught nothing. Almost everybody I've known has seasons like that. However, hopefully you are just having a temporary blip and once the water warms up you will be back on them. If it is any consolation I had two really remarkable wild trout in two casts last year, seems they were my whole quote for the year :-)
