The port grew on coal and iron when the docks was developed and Newport became rich. As the steelworks and iron works closed and the coal mines were closed the reason for Newport's growth and industrial existence ceased to exist. I was born there and when I lost my "Job for life" in Llanwern Steelworks I moved away to find work as did most of my friends.
Lived in Newport for 43 years and have watched as it has slowly but surely deteriorated. I believe that its a combination of mis-managed finances, poor management, poor decision making, rent is too high for retailers and the council has increased council tax to compensate. All the big shops and big names have gone to Spytty! Closed and empty shops, homeless people camping in every empty shop front and 'mish mash' shops at the end selling odds and sods and if you are fortunate enough, you might even be offered 'gear'. Friars Walk is slowly becoming abandoned and the list of shops listed on the wall in two foot high letters have almost all gone! EMPTY SHOPS DON'T PAY RENT!!! LOWER THE RATES TO INCREASE TRADE! Logic! Cwmbran is a much better alternative to Newport for shopping, leisure and parks.
Sadly Cwmbran is well on its way to becoming another Newport already , town centre is just duplicates of the same shops selling the same things , whoever owns it has run it into the ground every improvement they have made they didn’t consult anyone and it turned out shit ! They’ve ruined Gwent square

Many of the areas you described as being deprived were built to service the people who came to work in the docks and steel industries. Those have largely disappeared and the decent wages( comparatively) have gone and not bee replaced and the knock on effect has been huge.
Some of your footage IS NOT Newport very misleading,.it’s house prices are high a high number coming from Bristol, it’s no worse than most other city’s it’s not a town since 2002.The internet shopping is mainly the reason most city centres are closing.
Is it really one of the poorest places to live in the UK, there is a lot of poverty all over Great Britain, it can’t be that bad as our neighbours across the bridge are moving here from Bristol.
As someone who grew up in both Newport, Bristol and Caerphilly - aside from the house prices (I'm going now on my experience from the 80s and 90s), I feel relatively safe walking through all of the neighborhoods in Newport. Obviously don't walk around the docks like Mr T whilst waving the newest iPhone, but as much as Newport can be scruffy, I tend to find minding my own business there gets me no real trouble. Southmead especially I wouldn't ever visit again (albeit it's not precisely a commercial destination, so little reason to travel there without links to the local community), along with a few other similar areas. Pictures are decades out of date in some cases. The City has seen a lot of improvements recently. All City/Town centres are taking a hit due to online shopping. Like most places there are good and bad areas, where I live the average house price is £500,000, it’s a lovely street.
I went there recently and it was so grim. Just needs sprucing up and reinvigoration of culture and new cultures added, I think. It was awful, really bad

Newport has always been an industrial town with the steelworks and the docks ect. Most of the industries have closed. Preston Isn’t poor. The hinterland is very wealthy. All cities have deprived bits. Preston has a burgeoning tech economy and highly paid aerospace jobs. The North West is like London, huge extremes but there are opportunities.
The three biggest problems in Newport were the Fouweather brothers and Sheppard. No not a folk-rock band. Thankfully Alderman Fouweather has finally been got rid of and the other one shown up in Court for what he is. Sheppard having been kicked out of Cardiff lingers on for now though.

Welsh Government block the building M4 relief Road which would give better infrastructure and inward investment/jobs. They also run Education and NHS Wales- both worse than in England.
