  • Jailed for life at the Old Bailey today, the man who killed law graduate Zara Aleena will spend at least 38 years behind bars. The family of the 35-year old Londoner, who was murdered in a brutal and random attack as she walked home in June, said today the sentence brought them some retribution but no peace.

Ria Chaterjee was at court and her report includes distressing footage of him following other women before Zara.

If the community was responsible they would be able to stop him and report this. I remember more than 10 years ago. I saw a neighbor of mine being attacked by a violent boyfriend, as she cried for help from the balcony, I ran to the front yard and called a local bloke to interfere, he managed to stop him attacking her at the right time, yet I remember that bloke's wife shouting at him telling to mind his business and not to play the hero. This is the kind of mentality that can bring societies down and create unsafe environment for everyone, if these women who the killer attacked them first reported the incident to the police, Zara would've been saved that night and he would've been in custody.

The problem with a lot of these offences are that you may find a lot of them are for petty crime like vandalism, shop thefts, criminal damage etc. I'm absolutely not excusing them, but if they were to throw everyone who committed petty crimes in prison for months/years, there'd need to be another hundred or more prisons built in the country to house them all.
The biggest issue in the UK is that the probation service and police are underfunded, overworked (particularly with admin/paperwork, according to a friend of mine who used to be a police officer) and understaffed. This means too many dangerous or potentially dangerous criminals slip through the net due to bureaucratic red tape, and having too many agencies involved in cases. There's no doubt in my mind either that the prison service is under constant pressure to keep prison numbers down. Coupled with a broken social system in the UK, the results we see only too often.

That's a bit harsh. I've seen drunk couples walking home over the years, the guy falling a bit further behind on occasion. It'd be wonderful if everyone had the hindsight to know when something is going to happen, but unfortunately we have absolutely no idea unless it's something incredibly obvious, like they're being attacked, chased, or being shouted at. I'll wager they're extremely upset about not doing something. I know I would be. I like to think all decent people would always wish they could have been around when awful crimes happen, but the sad truth is that it's just terrible, unforeseen circumstances. I don't imagine the family blame them for anything either. What's to blame (aside from McSweeney) are the broken social and criminal justice systems in the UK that allow things like McSweeney to roam the streets at large.

Police spend an inordinate amount of time on paperwork, instead of walking the beat or on patrol. It's easy to blame the officers, social workers and probation officers/offender managers. I can't imagine being the people whose front yard this crime took place in. Imagine somehow not waking up to a violent rape and murder in your front yard, then getting up in the morning and your yard is a crime scene. There were people in all of those homes, no one woke up and did anything. How is that possible?
