I just had a light bulb go off because you explained what the u meant. I couldn't understand why E(X-U) meant when we aren't multiplying anything or at least not really. If you actually look at it, E means Sum Of and X is the score. So if you think about the order of operations for this equations, it means 1) Find the Sum of the scores first OVER N EX/N and then the next step which is 2) E-U or Some Of the scores minus the Mean squared E-U2/N Now it all makes sense. Just have to remember a sample is N-1
That is a good question, thank you for showing me what you did. You squared 14.5, that is you multiplied 14.5 by itself. Taking the square root of something goes the opposite way. You are trying to find what number times itself equals 14.5. In this case, you will have to use a calculator or a program like Excel to find that number which in this case is 3.808.
I computed the different parts of the formula leading up to that point. After they were calculated, I put those elements back into the original formula to get the answer.
I dont know how to put this into my question. "A doctor at a local hospital is interested in estimating the birth weight of infants. How large a sample must she select if she desires to be 90% confident that her estimate is within 3 ounces of the true mean? Assume that Population Standard deviation is 6 ounces based on earlier studies"
The question is asking how many observations are needed to have a margin of error of 3 oz. Margin of error formula for this is the critical value for 90% multiplied by the standard error divided by square root of n. You are solving for n when the margin of error equals 3. I hope this helps!

If you are being asked to calculate by hand, no.
If not, use Excel function STDEV.P and highlight the 100.
