Petroleum jelly will breakdown the gasket. Try silicon instead.
Petroleum products will deterorate rubber over time. Need silicone for gasket.
Take the seal out. Then you can paint the inside of the lid too. Also easier to treat the rubber with SILICONE before reinstalling it.
The cans I refurbed had a gasket that was easily removed...
I have a old M1 carbine ammo box that belonged to my father.....the seal was shot....I stripped it off and used red RTV to rig a new seal.....it is working just looks like crap...I would like to know how you would handle that!
