I was talking to a Filipina and told her that she would be lonely because neighbors in the US aren't friendly and engaging like in the Philippines. It's completely different than how neighbors interteract with each other in the Philippines. In the US it's almost a zero sum game getting to know your neighbors.

If given a chance to be in US I would love too because many job and opportunities are available if your not picky and you can save money then if you want to retired go back to the Philippines

The average American has over $100,000 in debt... About 6 million pesos. Are you sure you'll be able to save?

That make sense, but yes many filipina-American couples are successful too if they both working and not leaving a luxury lifestyle.

US an amazing place to make money for sure. So many jobs, good jobs.

I think that because filipinos in the usa make so much more than average Americans, they have a different view. I know most nurses make over $80k a year as an RN or PA working 12/3. 12 hours a day 3 days a week. Then they get a second job in another hospital and double that. Filipino women really are great income earners in the USA.

But how is that quality of life? Seems not a great way to live, work 6 or 7 days a week, little to no sleep, no social life or family life just to send all your hard earned money home for others to enjoy. Then a 2 week vacation every year so you can be with family again. 30 years of that would really suck.

@ScaleAutoGarage yes. I know. Its not a great life chasing the brass ring. I retired early and moved back to the philippines. My sister has a daughter in college and is paying $50k a year. I thought she was exaggerating. She works 2 jobs these days. Go University of Arizona!

I get it, but my rent was $67,000 per year alone. Everyone only talks about income but they need to start about income and expenses. And it's not just hospitals filled with Filipinos, it's Walmarts and other businesses where Filipinos are making minimum wage.

@@WatchCaliforniaExpat I totally agree, people are always talking about the 1% thinking that is how the majority of people are yet that is just not the case. There are many just as many Filipino workers or more doing the fast food drive through, the janitorial work and many other jobs that don’t bring in nearly as much money in the west. No one ever wants to talk about how hard it is for them to sustain themselves and an extended family back home.

American dream? what American dream? 😅
Im willing to bet those you 'asked' and said Yes are either :
    1) unaware of what is currently happening in the US, clueless of the fact that Filipino families who are US-based are starting to return to the Philippines for good, or
    2) would just like to see Taylor Swift

the notion that grass is greener on the other side combined with colonial mentality from centuries of foreign rule are strong reasons filipinos go abroad. one also does not understand the economics fully until they are in that foreign country. not understanding that food might be affordable in the US but it is rent or mortgage and cars that obliterate your income. and the proximity of your job to affordable housing. what pains me is that many don't even try to overcome fear and learn to drive when it is a basic skill for self sufficiency in the US to help earn more income and see friends

  • @yukio5419

as a filipino, these are some primary reasons why most pinoys prefer to go work and live abroad:
    1. money/bigger earnings. it's like the earning potential is more or less ten time more than what we can earn here.
    2. govt service / physical infrastructure - govt in other countries are less corrupt while it may be true that US can for example be very polarized in politics, but in terms of public service and corruption index, philippines is in such a bad situation. our govt service is poor. roads/highways/toilets/cleanliness in US, Canada and other countries are way way more developed. roads/highways tend to be very well constructed and very smooth...no road bumps and potholes. no spaghetti wires. riding from one state to another is such a very pleasant experience, even just for the view.
in first world countries, you will find that they allocate and fund for wider walking space (people-oriented vs car oriented), bike lanes, wide open parks where people can relax and just hang out or play. here in Davao, still on a very early stage, but you will find in many areas, even the sidewalks are occupied by so many vendors, people are forced to walk on the highways instead of sidewalks.
    3. culture of discipline - in general (because there are always exception anywhere), the culture of discipline, cleanliness is much more observed in first world countries. here in the philippines, you can find trash thrown almost everywhere, except in highly urbanized sections like BGC or Makati. Here in Davao, garbage collection is properly funded so cleanliness is average, but still on some nooks and dark corners, trash are still very visible.
    4. snow, snow, snow. - it's very hot in the philippines. almost all of us long to experience snow and cold weather.

Very accurate. Those I've known used the opportunity to "set themselves up" in the Philippines.

    • @WatchCaliforniaExpat
      @WatchCaliforniaExpat  5 місяців тому +3

Thank you for your thoughtful response. For me, if I cared about those types of things I would surely leave the Philippines in the next plane to California. For me, I care about the people I live with far more than not looking at spaghetti wires. And in these matters the Philippines is far better.
The only thing I think Filipinos need to remember related to what you said is that they won't just make 10 times as much, they will have expenses likely more than 10 times as much. For example, my two bedroom apartment in San Francisco in 2019 before moving to the Philippines was $5600 per month. That's about 315k in pesos. The average cost house in California is about $800,000. Yes this is an expensive area of the US. But Filipinos should consider the expenses of the US and other countries like Australia before moving abroad.

@@WatchCaliforniaExpat Big city Ca. is more than just expensive. It's exceedingly expensive.
Maybe it's where you lived but I was never greeted by less than two people from different households when I moved in America. I'm averaging half a person in the Philippines. Here I average one person a year interested in engaging in a conversation. Mostly to learn about America, but that's fine.
