Was Clarkson right about the MG SV having a 1000bhp Nitrous Oxide kit?

- Do you remember MG's supercar from 2004, called the MG SV? Well Mike Fernie has managed to get his hands on one, and looks to dispel the myth that was once uttered on Top Gear via Jeremy Clarkson. Did this brute of a car actually come with a 1000bhp Nitrous Oxide kit? Let's find out...

It looks like something straight out of Burnout Paradise
385bhp doesn't sound like much today but the earliest Pagani Zonda, with a 6 litre V12, only had 10bhp more.
As an American, that front grill shouts “Chrysler” to me
Yep, aussies might see the mid 2000s commodore in the front.

The second and third time are unnecessary... My eyes
Wow that would look great in a hedge
Cant see another comment beating this one! 🔥
😂 top comment.
Preferably upside down as well.
I'm not sure- I think this theory needs testing. Best way: let me drive it! ☺
It’s definitely “of the time”
Great info, my only complaint is that flashing a black screen over and over is not a great editing style. It is annoying and hard to watch.
Where’s that
Nevermind
Annoying to listen to, too.
i had a seizure
I just assumed they were trying to figure out who had photo sensitive epilepsy
love these cars, just not in this colour. MG Rover never deserved to die, MG isn't the same now
True, it's just another face for rebranded chinese cars.
The new "MG Motor" is of no connection to old MG anymore. Just a badge being ruined.
Now they’re basically just rebadged Chinese cars.
The two B's are to blame BMW & Blair...
yeah MG is profitable now
Peter Stevens, the designer of the Mclaren F1.
Gordon Murray : 😐
I gasped at that. Peter stevens was not the designer. He was lead engineer
@@richardharrold9736 incorrect. Murray has even referred to the intake being slightly to wide and how certain parts of the body he designed "wrong"
@@richardharrold9736 you've read the Wikipedia article haven't you. It says engaged Peter stevens, instead of engaged WITH.
@@richardharrold9736 which is different to design. The process goes: initial design concept, stage 1 design, going on for any amount of stages. Then it goes for Surfacing and detailing. Which is in fact different to design. Yes I know he is designing something, but he is officially a FINALISER, not the designer
@ no silhouette designer 🤣🤣🤣
It has forever baffled me why we always mourn when a certain car brand goes bankrupt but we never really buy their cars or in this case, always made fun of them.
Because there general cars were bags of shyte
Wasn't really MG that failed, but the Rover group that owned MG.
Not necessarily people definitely bought Saabs they just over engineered the cars
MG was just funnelling money for the investors personal fun and the cars they made were horribly outdated and lame with 0 reason to buy over competitors. Then they bankrupted themselves making this supercar, maybe if the MgF wasn’t so lame then this would have been a success. The actual baffling part is that there were no investors to save it but as soon as it went under everyone wanted the assets.
Honestly I like this channel, but what’s with the editing showing like that flash, and goes dark quickly; it’s awful. But great vid nonetheless, just that was the horrible bit
Ya, the weird flashing is not to great
idk i liked it
I agree with you. Especially when you are sensitive to quick light flashes it is horrible to watch.
Agree ! I closed my eyes 😂
Genuinely horrific for anyone epileptic

It looks like a faffed-about-with Rover 75.
Can't blame you, some cars just don't age well at all 😉
it's really colour sensitive! It's ok - but nothing special - in something like Aston Green, and the gill strakes behind the front wheel don't do it any favours
You mean to say that you're not a fan of the mangusta with punto headlights and a million shark gills mash up? A bit wrong isnt it.
It looks like something you'd do to your Nissan in Need for Speed underground in 2004, except it's missing neon and obnoxious stickers.
nice epilepsy shots as always 👍
*Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah*
@ Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know people having an unavoidable reaction to something was enough to make you cry. Maybe you're the snowflake here? Oh no, I've hurt your oh-so-strong masculinity, that same masculinity you hide behind whenever someone hurts your little feelings and you don't want to show it, because you think it makes you strong and special. Really, the only thing special about you is having 38 STDs from the 38th random leathery old affair that is half your age. Your video editor needs a better monitor or he can't colour grade.
I think it's getting the yellows right on the jacket. Threw everything else off.
Top gear had a deaf sound editor and drivetribe has a colorblind editor...
Maybe you should apply for the job then 🤔
My uncle had a nitrous oxide cylinder for his 1275gt mini in the 70s. Absolute legend that fella.
So mg went to italy, and made a Holden...
While going bankrupt and becoming chinese... yes.
@@MadIIMike seems.... excellent.
Looooool that's jus funny
I still remember watching the Top Gear episode and the one thing that stood out to me aesthetically about MG SV is the fact that the headlights are straight out of a Fiat Punto 188 - it used to be my parents car back then.
Same here! I was amazed that fact never seemed to get a mention. Could you imagine the flac a supercar manufacturer would get today for sticking in the headlights from a supermini 🤣
@@nmeister67 I believe MG could get away with it, considering it is a small car manufacturer with very little resources. Larger manufacturers should never consider such option, it's not like they need it either. But definitely curious to see something from FIAT on an MG lol.
@@nmeister67 the later (facelift) Diablos used headlights from the Nissan. A 300zx not a sentra or maxima so not nearly as bad.
Jaguar XJ220 had Metro front hubs.
Yeah, you'd never see Marina Door Handles on the car products of a multi-F1-Championship winning constructor like Lotus.
There's a large chromium galloping equine on the Throttle Body on my old MG's V8 Engine. Whats that all about? My son's Lotus has Vauxhall front wheel bearings.. How about that. There are GM, BMW, AUDI, Honda and other logos on many of the parts of my family's, other relatives and friends MGs and Rovers over the past two decades at least.

Production value! Well done. Audio plus video almost hits the heights of classic Top Gear under Wilman.
Looks like it belongs in a Max Power magazine from the early 2000's xD
Where do you think they got the idea lol
Ooh, i remember those...👌
don'[t worry new m4 and m3 start to look like MG...
Well that's because it is from the early 2000s.
With the SV there were 12 unfinished cars and they were shells, I know 2 people with 3 and you'll be glad to know that one runs and drives
Any of those get sold to Bad Obsession Motorsport?
My brother built these for MG power, what people didn't realise is these were made in a very small warehouse by a few people by hand, also the bodywork wasn't straight with the chassis because the holes were aligned wrong 🤣😅, I think they were made near Tenbury Well Worcestershire or at least was the last location they were built in
Never knew that, my family are from Tenbury, I worked at Longbridge. Tenbury is way out in rural Worcestershire, while Longbridge is North Worcestershire (straddling Worcestershire/ Birmingham border).
Meanwhile Hamster's fave car the Morgan is built in Malvern in South Worcestershire.
We built motorcycles here too, long ago
Shame MG fell over. Always felt MG and TVR should have teamed up a bit, they might still be around
you should consider those who have epilepsy before doing videography effects like you did for the beauty shots of this car. couldnt even make it through 1min because of the flickering.
I don’t have epilepsy, but those flashing was making me feel sick......a warning should be posted at the start......
Someone editing these has ADHD or something...........not the first time.
I take it you never watched top gear or the grand tour
@Eire1916 - - not sure how you could make yourself look like a bigger idiot. "Hey person with a medical condition don't watch a video with sudden unannounced flashing in it"...erm what
@@delphipascal even top gear was never that bad
I’ve always been a fan of the MG but always knew that it wouldn’t make 1000bhp without some serious re-engineering
Anybody realised he is wearing a jacket with GULF batch and the sponsor of this video is LIQUI MOLLY ! Holy molly.
Webster Engineering did make a 1000bhp MG SV, using chassis 101. They raced it at Santa Pod on more than one occasion. However, I believe it used a huge turbo rather than nitrous.
"Did you bang your head a bit Jeremy?" 😂
The rear always gave me TVR vibes
Still one of my ultimate guilty pleasure dream cars. Only ever seen one on the road locally, in tungsten grey wingless SV form. There's just something about these weird little forgotten cars from the noughties like the SVR and Prodrive P2 which captured my teen mind.
I can't really decide which is harder to watch. The design of the car or your editing.
I like the editing but each to their own
Awful editing it’s like they’re extending the video
Do a better one then, bell.
Do people really hate the look that much? I grew up with it so I guess I got used to it, tbh I think it even looks cool. Don’t just judge a book by it’s cover they drive really smooth round corners if you drive them right

I know it's not for everyone (obviously from the comments;-) ) I own it and love it and first viewed the exact car at the Motorshow in 2004 and wanted it ever since. I actually own a couple of shells (same as Bad Obsession) and one is being built as we speak with a 2020 Gen 3 Roush supercharged mustang engine with the 10r80 Auto.
t will be interesting to see what bad obsession do once binky and escargot are completed.
Reminds me of the modern day version of the lotus Carlton. I remember playing with one of these in 2005 in my 03 CLK55 AMG and I was very surprised! We were both doing over 150 mph at times, with my 55 being remapped and pushing just under 400bhp I would pull away at higher speeds.
The last ever MG. Such a tragedy Austin/MGRover went under.
last English MG, they are chinese now
@@gtametro the Chinese company MG Motor isn't related to this MG beyond the badge. They aren't MGs.
@@SpitfireFortyFour from the MGB until the MGF came out MG's were just badge engineered austins anyway (which continued with the 25 45 75), only now the name is owned by SAIC. I agree they aren't "proper" MG's, and i feel the same about them as the BMW Mini's but this is not much different to any other take over, Jaguar / Land rover / Bentley / Rolls Royce to name a few.
@@gtametro It is different to other takeovers as they totally removed production and design away from the country of origin. Theres literally zero connection to MG. While the BMW Minis are utterly horrific they're still (by majority) deisgned and built in Britain.
And I'd still say the Austin based cars were proper MGs, they were still performance cars. MG started as a tuning company for Morris so it becoming an "AMG" for AustinRover worked. The Maestro was an absolutely ridiculous car in the best way possible!
An MG badge should never be near an electric SUV made in China.
Not really, they were terrible to drive and had awful reliability issues.
MG should have took some tips from the hype around the Skyline R-34, where that same 1000bhp figure was often bragged about but needed a lot of expensive upgrades to reach it reliably.
That’s the same engine in my car!!! Mines not bored but stroked to 5.0 L
Love that 4v scream! It’s the best of both worlds it’ll rev high like a euro v8 and still somewhat rumble and have torque like a classic American v8
You Sir understand.
Bad Obsession Motorsport has entered the chat
It looks like dodge tried to build an rx8😂
The internals should handle 1000hp if it’s the forged internals like in my car. The weak point is the aluminum block
700hp is severely pushing the limits. Mines tuned to 475 to the wheels and that seems plenty for a small/light car
BOM has one, can't wait for the build to start.
Wow, so forgotten this is the first time I hear about and see this car
Looks like an Audi TT with some cheesy body kit pieces tacked on.
they must look at TT back and decided they want it on theirs..
Funny, I have Audi TT vents in my Punto. And you basically say that looks like a Audi TT with Punto headlights
Does this also have a metro front subframe with the track rods welded in position shoved under the back of it?
Love these cars... and was lucky enough to see a few of these in UK back in 2004.
After seeing this car in the old top gear clip (the one with Clarkson banging his head) I only saw the front of it and thought it looked awesome. A Monaro with a wide body and a big front splitter suited the car well. After seeing the whole car it’s pretty hideous. Terrible taillight and those massive side vents add up to a terrible look. I wish I never found this vid so it could continue in my memory as the fabulous factory wide body monaro
Editing was appalling here lads
I bumped into the owner of one these years ago at Brands Hatch when MG were in the BTCC early 2000's. He reckoned that there was a warehouse full of them that weren't sold when MG went under. They look ace, abit Max Power in some ways but still really cool
Reminds me of when Clarkson said the Veyron’s W16 engine was two V8s side-by-side. He’s still a human and everyone makes mistakes. Just most of us are lucky enough to not be on a global TV show

Plumbaman13 I know...?
These were phenomenal in their day, I remember one well.
This was back in the days of the Fast & Furious films and everybody thought nitrous was this magical thing they could put on their 1.8 Mondeo and make *A THOUSAND HORSEPOWER* !
Which, I mean, in theory they could, for a split second before it exploded.
Very underwhelmed by the looks. Looks like a hard top Crossfire with what I’d guess is a veilside body kit if I saw it
Gonna be honest, i miss MG and Rover. They made some cool stuff
They did make some nice motors. Just not very well...
@@marcuscoquer5958 The fact that there's som many Rover 25/75s still on the road mostly disproves that. @@mrcaboosevg6089 Old people cars do last well. They are well looked after, garaged and are often off the road for several years.

@@marcuscoquer5958 Of course not but at this point most have already been done, even then it's really a very easy job on a K series. I ain't saying they were great but they weren't bad and unlike many other companies they tried new things. I always wondered if this car even existed after seeing it in the news segment of Top Gear S1 and the later car review. They never mentioned the 1000hp version
Saw one of those parked up at Thruxton many years ago. It always struck me as a very different design for an MG
It looks like an Audi TT and a Dodge Caliber had a hate-baby.

The "motoring press" should have been more technically aware before before being called "motoring press"
Why should they assume that a major manufacturer was lying? Even if they doubted it, coming out and straight-up accusing them of lying would probably not be worth it.

I actually sat in the "show" car and it was equipped with a nitrous bottle at least. The same car you see in this video with the red seats. Sat in it at the Scottish Motor Show when they were promoting it. The nitrous bottle was fitted behind the front seats and looked to be plumbed in.
Why is Mike dressed like a pineapple?

Looks like a mix between an srt4, cobalt, and a stratus, which admittedly looks better than I though it would.
Never even heard or seen one of those, what a cool car
the front end reminds me so much of a Holden VZ Commodore SS
Wow! I’ve never had a seizure before! That was intense.
A 1000BHP nitrous kit would imply it's a 1000BHP of nitrous on top of the stock performance. Not like it would survive the 600HP off nitrous but still.
Jeremy clarkson banging his head in to the headliner still is hilarious
This looks like an Vauxhall Astra Diesel had a non-consensual baby with an Audi TT.

If that was the case, they wouldn't have gone bankrupt.
Definitely the best looking MG to date. I. So. Love. To own one!
Nice vid - that looks like Fiat Portofino blue - a mate had a Noble M12 in that colour. I guess it matches the Punto headlights?
I remember the first time I heard about this car, it was when Clarkson was testing one and he banged his head on the door when he was cornering 😄
Can't understand....getting headache... losing concentration...
Wow that car would look great in my garage which I would then set on fire.

The only other time I have seen this car is in my Top Gear 100 Fastest Cars book.
3:22 look at that build quality
It's made of either carbon plastic, either is strong but very wobbly.
That flashing video is the worst editing of all time. Put up a seizure warning you jerks.
The Kvale as you called the car company, it was set up by an American dealer who also had tried to save Jensen Motors, the last car he helped Jensen was the Jensen Healey GT, beating BMW M3 breadvan in its design but they do look similar.
Really interesting Mike Fernie, I'd forgotten about these. How much are they these days on the used market?
Anyone know the season and episode where this car was reviewed?
Thanks to the sponsors.... I can literally hear the tumbleweeds rolling in the wind.
I'd die a happy man seeing (and hearing) one of these in the wild
As an American - can confirm there are TONS of 1000hp mustangs with the modular 4.6L V8.
Not with stock internals, but there absolutely are 4 figure power levels from the 4.6 and 5.0L versions of this engine.
New cams, valves, pistons, rods, and upgraded cooling and oiling system can get you well over 1000hp with a stock engine block. And nitrous.
There's guys with over 700hp without nitrous.
I remember seeing a red one of these years ago while on holiday in Aviemore up in Scotland. Was parked in the hotel carpark I think next to a MGb V8
