Andrew's songwriting ability is vastly overlooked. Just pull up the chords to this song and follow along while they play. Most pop songs have 3, 4, maybe 5 chords total. This song uses....well, damn near every chord that exists. I counted 47 DISTINCT chords in this song. That's fucking crazy. And yet....it all hangs together perfectly. So many creative chord progressions going on in this song.
There aren't 47 distinct chords. It has 3 or 4 Key changes which is obviously impressive, but 47 distinct chords is almost impossible since they mostly use major or minor chords which are, in total, 24.
@@prisatamasyaefullah8314 it's too bad that Tame Impala's wayy more famous than these guys. I like TI too, but MGMT is at the same level, if not better.
I just don't get why some people are like "I miss the 'Electric Feel' Mgmt band" when you can see clearly this is truly a masterpiece, pure art. I still remember the moment I received my new congratulations album, and I remember particularly this song got stuck in my head. Mgmt have my respect by creating such a melodic tune with great Lyrics. Long live great music like this.
It seems a LOT of their songs, imagery, videos, lyrics, etc....are centered on the idea of the OCEAN as a sort of mystical metaphor for deeper conceptual ideas. It's like an aesthetic tonality for this band....the ocean. Anyone else notice this? They have TONS of oceanic/beach imagery in many of their videos(starting with Time to Pretend), songs, live shows, etc. They even dressed up as fishermen on Fallon to play Lucifer Sam...and Plenty of Girls in the Sea. Wouldn't be surprised if their next album is titled "Isn't the Ocean Fucking Great?"
Kevin Faulkenberry they have another KCRW performance just a few yrs ago that is 🔥🔥 too! Made for a great trippy night for me about a month ago. I got stuck playn it on repeat. Ugh I love these guys so 😍
That little guitar solo at the end really makes this song. As much as I love the studio version, I wish they had included this part, too, as it has such a haunting quality to it that really fits it well.
Couldn't agree more. I almost like this version better solely for that reason; it's just that little bit extra that confirms my suspicion that Andrew is a genius in the grandest sense of the word.
Tommy McCullough This will probably never happen, but if ever MGMT decides to release a remastered album, I hope they'll record studio version of this... with the little introduction, maybe as a separate track haha,
couldn't be happier that good music like this is still out there...just recently got into MGMT...love the new album, sort of a beach boys/pink floyd/ flaming lips thing to me. perfect.
When they played this song live, I cried when he said I'd rather die before I get sold. Im not the kinda person to cry in public but I was overwhelmed by the beauty in this song..
I love how Andrew's eyes remained closed during this performance. You can tell he's feeling it. Most of the time I wish that their concerts would be like this. No screaming fans, no "I love you Andrew" Just MGMT & their music. We get it, You love the boys. Just let us enjoy what we paid for. Thanks for capturing this, & for letting us see how passionate MGMT are about their music. x
I fucking love the deep bass bridge(one of many in this song) that's reminiscent of the Twin Peaks theme song. Seriously...THIS song is what made me realize MGMT were no mere fly-by-night band. This song is insanely creative. It basically SOUNDS like a really good marijuana high FEELS. I think I'll play this again....why not?
the first time i listened to Congratulations i must admit it disappointed me. Not really disappointed, i was just expecting something different. I decided to give it a second listen and a third and then i started to realize how good it actually is. If you think that album is a failure it's just because you haven't listened to it properly, because no way this is a failure but a hope for the music. Keep it weird MGMT!
you guys should google the kcrw website and search for this session, it's on there and its much better sound quality... this must be one of the greatest songs ever made and it never gets old.......
amazing. A lot of those vocal notes are EXTREMELY hard to hit, and the guys nailed them perfectly. I give a lot of props to MGMT on this, I didnt think it would sound that good live. I guess im just used to mediocre bands who sound nothing like their studio versions. Anyways, amazing song, and i have a new found respect for MGMT for absolutely nailing this song live.
i cant wait until im telling my kids when theyre watching them play this when theyre like 70 about how i used to watch them play this when they were 20 years old just like how my dad tells me about led zeppelin and the beatles being this age when he was younger
You know, this album (and this song especially) not only take psychedelia to a whole new level, but instead represent a paradigm shift in music that we have not seen since the introduction of Rap. Alongside bands such as The Aliens (compare this to "Bobby's Song" off of their newest album Luna) and you begin to see a new vision, a new voice, of a newly empowered generation.
I liked oracular spectacular and I LOVE congratulations. Most people who said they liked mgmt only liked kids and time to pretend anyway. True mgmt fans would like both albums, although the music was a lot different I think its all great.

@@NorigoPT Alien days is there best chord progression IMO. Loved that shit on acoustic after learning my chords.
I personally rate this as being up there with the Beatles and Pink Floyd level of psychedelic songwriting.
***** Roger Waters is a subpar songwriter. His lyrics are bleak and his songwriting is nothing revolutionary.
+Bob D are you serious....
Bob D I think he’s talking about syd Barrett
This seriously one of the best psychedelic rock songs of our time. Up there with the greats
absolutely
jools bee you are forgetting about of moons birds and monsters
totally better than tame impala

Andrews intro is still goddamn hilarious

This is the song that plays throughout my life.
Can never get tired of hearing this.
That acoustic guitar.. Legendary.
agreed. ever since my first real shroom trip this song has ment everything to me.

yes!! in song of moons, birds and mosters - easy like the ocean
I’ve actually never put thought into this
it’s funny since ben said he’s scared of anything that lives in water
James plays guitar, keyboards, drums, and sings. respect to James
The beginning could make anyone fall in love with a guitar. The chords are amazing.
I love how his voice breaks when starting to sing "The empty sky...". I like this more than the studio version

Congratulations always sounded more genuinely psychedelic than the other albums, more 60's influenced.
I really feel this is their best song, period.
My heart melted at 9:02 when andrew starts singing that part

The first hauntingly beautiful section of this song is just so damn good! It’s very goosebump-worthy. And so is that guitar solo at the end.
this song is like harsh wind in my soul...the lyrics so heartbreaking and hopeful all at once
Love the ending in this version, like, blissed out, man...
Sorry but Oracular Spectacular does not compare to their 2nd album. Congratulations is superior other than Oracular having the radio hits.
MGMT (Self-titled) is even better
Eduardo Feinmann Their fourth album is even better
everyone shut up all their albums are fucking amazing but this is their best song.
side 2 of oracular spectacular is damn good plus metanoia
ImperfectGames 4th? hasnt come out yet.

that guitar solo at the end was such a sweet treat i was screaming
that outro is AMAZING.

if the music you created makes you smile when you play it
you know you made something fucking great.
it's funny how long this song is but it doesn't get boring anytime! it's completely awesome.
Best outro ever. Always reminds me of Earthbound.
I love that line..."if you're conscious you must be depressed" . Brilliant song.
Favorite song from MGMT. Saw them perform it live & I teared up during this song because it was so awesome.
that must've been amazing to see/hear, just seeing them sing this live on youtube makes me tear up.
Saw them in Boston. They opened for themselves.
Even with this low quality video I got chills at 2:52

Congratulations is that album that made me listen to MGMT

Congratulations is my all time favorite album by MGMT.
Andrew has so much fucking SOUL!!! I love this band.....
Greatest song ever written.
this is absolutely beautiful...
I remember first listening to this song, and then being sent into a psychedelic mind-numbing trance at 7:28. I shat brix.
After the first time I saw this, I had a dream about craps and the beach. The power of Andrew's descriptive words...
Love this video! just wish it was better quality.

best MGMT song ever by far
Drugs, brains, lyrical and instrumental skill and musical aptitude all converge and this was made.
this is like a symphony piece. all the different movements
So pumped for their next album
240p! I actually like it - makes it seem vintage.
Probabely said this before! one word wow :) love this song.
Beautiful musicians.
I cry everytime I listen to this..
musical masterpiece. too great to be live. amazing. =]
