Today we visit the beautiful Witsand Bay, which is well known
for its dangerous rip currents and rough seas. The most important thing with rip currents is not to panic, and not to fight it. Floating on your back is the best way to save energy and eventually the rip current will stop. This is called the ‘rip head’ and you will know when you have reached this point. Then attempt to swim back parallel to the shoreline where the waves are breaking. As you can see the sea does get very choppy in this area making conditions worse to swim in.
I was pretty shocked how far the rip current had sept me out to sea. I did panic for several seconds but once on my back felt better. I was lucky that i caught it in time, could have been much worse. These rip currents The well known rips run from ‘Rame Head’ along the coast to Portwrinkle. These currents run fast and do catch people out. Just search ‘Witsand bay rip currents’ on the net and you will see the results, frightening!
Just to let everyone know I do actually swim in the sea 2 - 3 times per week at different locations around Devon & Cornwall so I fully understand the perils of rip tides and strong currents. I must admit this rip current did catch me out, because it happened so fast! I also got diverted with the filming so I’ve learnt my lesson!

There is life guard cove here from April to September. I am told they are kept busy especially during the summer months. A big thanks to the RNLI for the great work around out coastline. This beach is also popular with dog walkers because of its vast area.

I got caught in a strong rip outside Long Island New York when I was about 23, and way before I knew what the hell a rip was. The group I was with were all hanging out on the beach, and I went in the water for just a quick dip/swim. What seemed like a fairly reasonable distance (maybe 25ft?), I looked back and saw how far I had actually gone out, and immediately I could feel the strength of the current when I tried to swim back. 30 seconds or so and I kept getting pulled further out and was seriously starting to panic, while frantically swimming in place to absolutely no avail...
Finally one of the locals yelled out and mimed "swim sideways!" After what was another good amount of time, I FINALLY escaped the rip and the waves helped circle me back to shore- I'd be lying if I said I wasn't shaken and totally out of gas.
Rip tides are no joke, folks; get careless or arrogant out there and mother nature will humble you VERY quickly.

Yes Jacob I think knowledge is key with riptides and could well save lives.
Ive been swimming a lot recently and I thought I would mention it as knowledge saves lives. To be fair this was a strong current I think, I really did panic as I has just started sea swimming. I now swim daily, but stick to safer places and never swim when the tide is on the turn going out, that's when people get their problems. Your experience sounds terrible, glad you survived. Yeah I remember going to school on long island as a kid they will be telling us about rip tide in this happy nice lady way but I was scared like this is nothing to be happy about this is serious shit especially if you don't know how to swim
I almost died yesterday because of a rip current, in one moment I was within arms reach of my two cousins and after 1 big wave crashed I washed off my eyes and looked back to see they were FAR away from me and at that point I couldn't feel the ocean floor anymore. I did exactly what this guy said but just know sometimes swimming diagonally won't work and even then you CAN'T panic. At that point all you can do is float and keep and eye on the next wave that's going to crash against you which I did while yelling "I need help, I'm not kidding I need help NOW". Thankfully this random guy heard me yelling and he immediately jumped into action. He swam right up to me and put his body behind mine and told me to kick off him which I did, that helped get my feet back on sand and then I turned around and leaped back for him and once we gripped hands I yanked him towards me so hard and after that we were home free. I was so afraid for him because he literally put himself in the current to help me. I also know alot of drowning victims sometimes kill their rescuers out of sheer panic so as soon as I realzied he was here to help I made it a point not to grab all over him, I only grabbed his wrist. Was so unbelievably horrifying to realize I came so close to drowning. I was doing everything right and still I was taking in water, and that's when I realized just how serious my situation was becoming. But earlier that day I should've known better, I could feel just how strong the current was but because the beach flag was yellow (means calm to moderate waters)I brushed those observations aside. So please to anyone who has a flag system on their beach, don't fully put your trust in it because the water can change in a split second. You never know. And always trust your gut, if you feep the current is strong then don't go to the second sand bar, it's not worth it. I shouldn't have gone out so far but I did and I almost died because of it. The ocean is no joke. But yeah if swimming diagonally doesn't work just remember we humans have natural buoyancy so don't let your panic take over, if you panic, you won't be able to float and that rip current WILL eventually release you. So if that guy hadn't saved me in the time he had my plan was to survive the waves (if I could) until I made it out into open water where the waves wouldn't be crashing against me over and over. And never EVER try to swim back to shore, it will NOT work and you WILL get tired as stated in the video. It will also make you panic more because you'll start noticing how you're making zero progress.
Hey Tesla glad you survived, sounds like a horrible experience. I hope the video helped a little. I think most people panic in these situations, myself included even when you know it may happen. The bay I swam in is notorious for strong currents and small rips, but I rarely visit this place now, too dangerous! Ok buddy best wishes - Jim

My bestfriend died because of the rip current. They went to Costa Rica for a week vacation, the resort they went into doesn't have a warning signs about the rip current, and they should have put something to aware the beachgoers who dont know about. They dont even have a lifeguard. It took place on Thursday 4th of August 2022. They dont even published it, theres no news like it never happen.😭😭😭💔 Croc's resort and casino sucks.. dont go to Costa Rica you guys. People died there and they dont care. If you want to go to the beach just go to Florida, SC, California where theres people who care people.

Yes totally agree buddy. To be fair I was pretty naive, everyone warned me about the currents down there. Anyway lesson learnt. The irony now... I swim every day and have become an open water sea addict with friends. Some good came out of the film. All the best, Jim

I know getting pulled out had to scare you, you handled it well sir. My son and I got caught in a rip current a week ago at Holden beach, NC and it was the scariest moment of my life, I was scared more so for my son than myself. Thankfully we made it out safely but we were both out of breath. I came across your video looking up stuff about rip currents and I hate that happened to you. I’m so glad you’re okay!

To be fair i had just started sea swimming and very naive about this location so pretty foolish looking back now. I sea swim daily now with a group and understand, respect the currents etc now. I love the ocean but I also fear it so much. I love fish, coral reefs, the ocean and just the whole aesthetic. The reason why I fear it is because I can't even swim and im going to Florida this month. 😭

Never been caught in one but it seems the rip is NOT your enemy - it won't kill you. The current just moves you to a different part of the water yes? It's panic-swimming towards land and depleting your energy which kills you, exactly like the sudden-onset panic you see here, this is how it happens, so don't do this! Distance from shore is what makes people panic, so don't see it as a big deal, if you can float and swim you'll be fine even 10 miles out imo. Don't rush to get back to the shore, you need to stay well within your limits at all times so just gently swim to the side to slowly move out of the current then aim for a bit of the beach to the side of where the current took you out and swim at a gentle pace. If it takes 10 mins to get back in let it, there's no rush, stay calm and stay well within your abilities, you should be going slow not going fast in this situation. If you are being swept round a headland or taken out on a strong tide the same applies, the first thing you must do is conserve energy and float and wave or shout for rescue. This is how I see it, seems logical.

I literally let the riptides take me I swim under water when I can and float on my back and just let it take me and enjoy Mother Nature at work it’s beautiful, the tides go far out but I still got so much energy to float and enjoy the swim🙌🏻
What a day out. Put your back out getting out the car, lose your Sunnies in the Surf, nearly drown in a Rip, chat up a loverly Lady and then film yourself doing flashing videos. Haha you have all the fun.

Also remember folks don't panic so you can get the maximum amount of air into your lungs and not water, once you have a good amount of air hold it for a few seconds this will help you float easier on the surface, time your exhale and inhales between waves and ride the waves back in when you have escaped the rip current.

The main thing is not to be scared when I got into a rip current. I always relaxed,float on my back, and eventually a wave threw me ashore. To do this, you don’t need to be a good swimmer, you just need to be able to float on the water.

Rip tides in Phuket can be bad and there's a real lack of understanding. I have seen a few people die there. Wouldnt get me in the cold water there though. You're braver than me!
Yes Capio Phuket rip tides have been drummed into me very bad down there. The main problem is most people always swim against the rip tides (myself included) its human nature, but sadly its the main reason for most of the drownings. People also panic, i did when you feel yourself getting dragged out to sea. Anyway all good, best wishes
Not use to these here in Winnipeg but a few winters ago for a wedding we went to Mexico to celebrate. We'd swim off the beach and there was no issues,we took a tour boat out to an island and we did some swimming there. On that island and in ankle deep water is when you can really feel the strength of the ocean. The beach shore was quite steep and the drop off to about 50 feet deep was pretty immediate, I never got swept out and wasn't worrying too much as behind us anchored was our boat but the sheer strength of that ankle deep rip tides is no joke,it felt like I was literally trying to get sucked off my feet. Be safe out there,water doesn't discriminate.

What the hell, as a kid back when I was 10-17, my mom would take us out to the beaches and she wouldn’t supervise us much, we’d be gone for like an hour or so into the waves.
The beaches were populated and very public with lifeguards at least.. but I was and still am the extreme type of dude and I remember I’d go deeeep in, where I couldn’t touch the ocean floor by a long shot . Anyway, this one day I couldn’t come back, in which I’m sure I probably would have either been saved by a lifeguard or died (if no one saw me) but luckily, this dude I never met must have seen me struggling, we locked eyes and he extends his hand out , I swim towards him and he pulls me back to where I can touch the ground.

I never knew what a rip current could do to a swimmer until one day when I was in my early sixties, I was out in the water about waist deep when all of the sudden I noticed the water reached up to my neck and the nest thing I lost my balance and my feet couldn’t touch the sand. I remember very vividly that my legs felt cold water and a crazy thought came into my mind that at any moment now a shark would come up to take a big bite out of my legs or…even half of my body (I’m only 5’ 2”)!!! I was very scared and in my mind I cried out to God to help me. I tried so hard to swim back to shore but I felt like I wasn’t moving at all. Out of the blue I saw a man standing on the shore waving his hands to get my attention. He pointed me swim to his left. I started to swim as hard as I could until I ran out of breath and was absolutely exhausted. Right away I knew I was in deeper trouble and I had to pace myself. And so I decided to just float on the surface and do a few dog paddling. Even though I was still far from the shore, I remember seeing the gentle in-coming waves moving toward the beach and at that moment I knew that I can flow back to shore with the waves. I started to swim as fast as I could toward the beach and as soon as I felt the waves crashing down and my feet could touch the sand, I just dropped down and rest. From that day on I only go out in to the water at knee deep or less….more like waddling in a kiddy pool! 😂

This guy is why people get caught out , he could of got cramp , attacked by shark , anxiety attack ,which freezes all of your senses and makes you unaware of where your surroundings are , or just drown . No one even with him which is crazy or life guards to spot him , another victim waiting . Thanks for showing us all how not to swim out alone or let a current drag you out
i got caught in one today and it was honestly really scary. i didn’t know what was happening until after i was rescued. i was trying to swim out and it was making me go further out and i started to yell for help from some near by swimmers because i could no longer touch the group and immediately started to panic. but they were getting swept up too. i was trying to calm myself while also trying to swim back to shore when i noticed life guards were coming into the water, and that’s when i really started to have my anxiety attack. i realized how serious this actually was when they started to show up but i also knew that they would help me. the life guard who pulled me in was super nice and definitely helped calm my nerves. he explained what was happening and what he was doing the whole time. the waves were so big and we both kept getting pulled under but eventually we made it to shore. i’ve always had some anxieties around the ocean but was starting to feel a bit more comfortable after many years of my older brother being brave and showing me what to do but this has definitely set me back. i’m just glad my younger brother didn’t get pulled out. he just happened to go back to my mom right before the current got really bad. it was super scary but i’m thankful everyone made it out alright :)

You gotta learn when the waves come up to you, you jump up with them and you’ll ride the waves. Learned this after living in Naples florida for 24 years lol

Born and raised in Australia where going to the beach is pretty much your highest ambition in life and your second home, it's generally always hilarious seeing foreigners tackling the ocean with all their sun protection and accessories, not to mention their general uncoordinated goofiness which you've clearly recognised here hence the comedy music. Sometimes its terrifying seeing foreigners near or in the ocean, luckily they usually preference swimming in front of a lifeguard between the flags. Cool to see the southern point of England too, I always wondered what that looked like. So with being in the ocean or any body of water, be it a lake or river or whatever, for me its like a second part of my brain and body is activated and I become like a dolphin just about, and sometimes a bit of a whale, flying out of the water and landing sideways back in, that's how I approach it, I learn from the animals that do it best. Sometimes I might want to enjoy the wave hitting me front on, so I time it out and tense on impact along with holding a good strong stance, I do this as an exercise to better deal with the various shit we have to deal with in work life etc, it helps condition the muscles and the mind to absorbing impact without it phasing you. Anyway, glad you still had fun and were a friendly presence on the beach happily talking to people - "Good sport!"

I only recently learned what rip current is. I used to love swimming in the sea, but once I learned what these are I refuse to step my foot in the sea.
It would've been a miracle If your glasses washed up on shore When you were about to leave
You should get one of those rubber things you strap onto the back of the glasses and wrap around your neck or ears or something so they don't fall off, not to sure how they hold onto you but I'm pretty sure it's safe

rip tides and rip currents are completely different animals. Rip currents are narrow currents that occur in surf zones that result in water flowing away from the shore, typically near a break in a sand bar. Rip tides, on the other hand, are very strong currents that occur as the tide pulls out of an inlet. And an undertow will
pull you under…. rip currents can travel as fast as 8ft per second. that’s faster than an olympian swimmer. maybe should check surf forecast before dancing on the beach and putting yourself in danger next time.

Yes I must agree. 3 years ago I was a complete newbie to sea swimming. Now I swim daily in Plymouth open sea swimming with a lovely bunch of people throughout the winter. I’ve learnt so much and longest swim to date was over 1 mile. Thanks for watching hope you enjoyed, best wishes Jim

I just watched Benny Hill.
I was stuck in a current with my twin sister and we kept getting pulled out further and further I really should have screamed for help but the only way we were able to escape was by Pushing up the ocean bottom with my foot and I was holding my sisters hand I was able to pull and yank her ahead of me I shouted to her go because I didn’t want her to risk saving me because I got her ahead of me and the whole time I was having a panic attack and my body was so exhausted I was about to give out swimming. Toughest fight of my life and of course we tried going back in ocean the previous day and it fucking happened again… we watched the news following night and they was saying avoid the beach cuz there was high currents from a distant hurricane but like we didn’t know and every time we went in ocean there were atleast several plus other guess but we were vacationing in NC. I don’t think I will ever go into the ocean again I honestly feel like I have ptsd from it it still terrifies me thinking about it. I even tried swimming parallel and it didn’t shit that’s why I had to keep pushing off the ocean bottom even though it kept pulling me deeper into the ocean making it deeper and harder to kick off from the ground.
This happened to me a few hours ago. My sister got separated from me and she got out fine and I didn’t want her coming back for me…I got stuck underwater too. I was wearing a life jacket but it stood no chance. I’m so glad it’s over and I’m so scared. I’m so full of water I feel so weird.
Anyway I’m glad we all got out ok.

Go to the beach they said, it will be fun they said have a swim they said . The thing with a riptide is people get tired trying to swim against it they are incredibly dangerous always respect the sea. As always an interesting video Jim.
Yes mate exactly people do get tired with the rip, impossible to beat it. Phuket has a terrible reputation for rips so sad to see. People need to know the dangers and where action to take even though it must be terrifying! As always thanks for the support Michael very much appreciated - Jim

I Absolutely love this video, it is exactly 💯 how it happens and how to respond... l got caught in a rip ride minehead. One minute l was paddling splashing 400meters from shore opposite Butlins then suddenly l was out at sea handing past the harbour lol some guy come on his dingy and dragged me back lol
I knew Whitsand bay was bad for the rips, but this did freak me out and my camera was nearly ditched as I really thought I was in trouble. I actually swim most days but never at whitsand, lesson learnt. Thankd & best wishes
I never really saw rip currents as a danger I use to play in them as a kid because I knew what I was doing. I also use to go out during storms because the waves were huge
