You do the best visual videos of all the UA-cam channels I subscribe to!! And the music is SUPERB. Thank you for all your hard work and creativity, because the end results are always fantastic!
Your video of the Sykes is outstanding. Also, your post-shoot production capabilities are superb, and would be the envy of many commercial operations. Keep up the fantastic work that you do “Behind the Door.”
Thanks for another fantastic video. Take your time producing more--after all the season for leaving won't be for weeks yet :) It will fill the void of watching ships on all the cameras.
I worked on the Sykes as a deckhand in the summer of 1970. Still enjoy seeing her wherever I can catch her. We scrubbed her white line and Inland Steel lettering all the time. Great job. On the video. Her stack is stainless steel, and yes we scrubbed that as well.
The boat videos are my favorite, but I enjoy all your videos. Traveling around Door County, road trips, your story telling is so interesting and informative.
Thank you for these videos. You are responsible for my husband and my addiction to the lakers. We found you 3 or 4 years ago and we love these ships. We lived in Mobile AL for 30 years and we knew about the ships that visited the port. We love your creative work sir.
Amazing shots! I can appreciate the amount of effort it takes to put together videos like this. The community makes it worth it 😊 The Sykes was the first ship I ever went out of my way to see - she’s got so much old-timey charm. You captured her majestically!
Kevin a masterful piece of dronemanship (!!). Really enjoy your winter layup series every year, which I know is a busy time for you filming and then editing for us....we can wait for the best quality filming and commentary on the Lake 🙂
With all do respects to you and what you do, apologies are not necessary. Your videos are always enjoyable regardless of when you release them. Others have videos out, but yours , to me, are more enjoyable. All the best, keep doing what you do, I’ll be waiting!
Awesome vid as always Kevin! Love everything you do. Your videos and pics are beautiful. Don't become a slave to the UA-cam algorithms. People that churn out a video every week are not necessarily the best creators. Keep doing what you do. There are a bunch of people out there like myself who can't wait to see your next video no matter the length of time in between.
I've been meaning to mention that I was the first viewer of your book release video. Caught it about 15 seconds after you posted it. As a result, I am the proud owner of signed copy #92. It's beautiful work, Kevin.
Just did an engine overhaul on the Burns Harbor in Sturgeon Bay about a week and a half ago. Up here in Superior now doing the Walter McCarthy and the American Century, then we’ll be back down to do the Stewart J Cort in 2-3 weeks
@@bnoblit company’s a little finicky about posting stuff online but if you’re in the area, look for the white vans haha. Yeah Screwy Stewie is an odd one, only laker I know of that uses an EMD for power generation and not just propulsion, not to mention the backwards engines
@@spudwickthrockmorton2112 It's sure good to hear from you again. Hope life is treating you well. Sounds like another busy season for you. ⛴️🚢 Those boats couldn't stay afloat without you.
Love your videos, the music you choose. No need to ever apologize for taking time on your videos, gives us all something to look forward to, during the winter layup. She is a classic ❤❤
Love all the videos you post, and your photography is amazing! Boat nerd from the twin ports and two harbors of lake Superior. Thank you for bringing us along on your journeys.
I find it amazing. Every freighter has her bumps, bruises, scrapes, and scars. But the Wilfred Sykes, even this end of seasons, seems to come out more unscathed than most. I'm sure it's not for less nautical miles traveled. But it could speak towards the Captain and his crew's abilities and skill. I'm curious to know how long they have been serving on the Wilfred Sykes? Also I've noticed that boats from this early generation (the 50's) do seem to have less scrapes. Anyone think there is anything to this?
Realistically, Winter lay-up only happens once each year. Your videos give us the desolation, if you will, of the end of the Season. I live on the East Coast in New Jersey and it reminds me of the end of the Summer Tourist Season at the end of August, the ‘sadness’ the end with the shadows getting longer at the end of the day adds to it. Thank you for this important part of the Shipping Year, so beautifully documented.
It's certainly a bittersweet time, but an important part of the shipping year. I can relate to your end of the season down the shore (I'm originally from Bayonne).
I love your videos and know when I see a new one come out it’s going to be a quality video! Quality, not quantity! Keep up the good work and thanks for all you do!
Kevin I have always been impressed with how quickly you have been able to edit your footage. I can tell based on my own tracking of boat movements that you are moving extremely efficiently in editing these videos. I say all that to say that if you were to take the footage and spread-out editing and distribution over the months of January, February and even into March, I am sure few would mind that fact and thus allow you to maybe not feel like you have such a backlog of material. I have enjoyed your videos for many years and looking to pick up your book this year. Might I make one content suggestion and that is to capture a few of the boats leaving at the end of winter layup. This year especially nearly all of my favorite boats are at Bay Shipping for winter lay up so it would be great way to enter into spring for this Midwestern to see my favorite boats leave winter layup. It seems the boats leaving winter layup is now the way I know a long Midwestern Winter is over and spring has started. Thank you for the content and blessing to your family.
Thanks for the idea! They are hard to catch leaving. There is little forewarning. At least with them coming in you can track their movements. I'll try to get some on the way out!!
Take your time! We still have 2 months of winter layup to get through! I am in Sturgeon Bay for the 1st time and watched them moving Burns Harbor and PRT yesterday in person! Awesome! Thanks!!
I just overhauled an engine on the Burns Harbor last week, now we’re up here in Superior doing the Walter McCarthy and the American Century. Will be back in Sturgeon Bay for the Stewart J Cort in 2-3 weeks

I live in southern Door & our home is on the Bay and we see some big ships come through. It’s such a treat! Especially at night when they’re lit up. Often they stop & sit in the Bay for a few days. I assume waiting to get cleared to enter Green Bay? I wish I knew more about these particular ships. Anyway, I so appreciate your videos. Thank you!
My husband just found the Marine Traffic App. It’s a fantastic resource. New to us! We now know that the ship sitting out in the Bay that we can see from our house is the SARNIA, a Canadian oil/chemical tanker. The App also shows what’s headed our way from Green Bay so we’re watching for it! I have a feeling we will become obsessed with this app!
Great video Kevin as normal. I do miss your narration on this one. I compare you to the Morgan Freeman of Freighter videos. Love hearing the facts and other tid bits. Keep up the good work.
Love this. Thanks for the videos. Love the Sykes and Stewart J Cort. I never see the Cort unless I go to the Soo. Wilfred Sykes I see all of the time on the St Clair river. The only two boats we have laid up in the harbor in Sarnia are the Saginaw and Robert S Pierson.
Great Coverage of the winter fleet. I'm curious as to why the Burns Harbor and the Paul Tregurtha went around deaths door instead of using the channel off of Lake Michigan?
Entering from off Lake Michigan and through the canal (as opposed to bayside) is difficult, and requires more work with so much ice for the 1000-footers to pivot and back into the berths.

Thanks for the next installment of the Winter Layup Kevin - short or long, love them all! The Sykes is a wonderful Lake Boat - love the lines on her.
I think the Wilfred Sykes is the best looking boat on the lakes.
Absolutely!
For me, it's a tie: the Sykes and the Alpena. Lucky me, I caught both this year!
The sister ship Reyerson has beautiful lines like the Sykes but unfortunately could be forever laid up. Sad
