- Stephen Sackur speaks to Angie Thomas, a writer whose first novel electrified America with its unflinching portrayal of a teenage black girl confronting police violence, inner city gang culture and a society rooted in discrimination. When it comes to issues of race and racism, the gap between America's promise of equality and the reality of entrenched inequality seems depressingly wide. Generations of black Americans have made efforts to change that; how far have they got? Can hope win out over fear and hate?
“True change comes from discomfort” and “I want to be a microphone rather than a voice for this generation”...wow. She never fails to inspire me. 👏
The real discomfort is that she is pushing fake racism and can't handle reality.
Thank you for this. You actively listened. So did we.
This interview is amazing 😉 yes Angie YES!!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿💯
This was a soft talk interview!
stieve ! where is the subtitle..Why Don't you know i watch you r program with subtitle??...puff :)
Wow was an inspiring interview, thanks BBC for directing the passions of the young, activist, influencers to give human rights struggle an colorless face, at the end of the day. Hard questions persuading or lifting these stereotypes from our subconsciousness are very useful, please keep it up.
The real problem in America is that many minorities follow bad culture and have a terrible upbringing due to family structure issues. They are also a protected class in America by way of law and the media protection. There is no discrimination or police brutality problem in America. The Far Left Elites are pushing fake racism because they want to pretend they are doing something good, when in reality they are not.
Stereotypes are there for a reason! Facts!
She nailed this interview, even when Stephen Sackur threw in some sly hoops to try and trap her in stating a particular viewpoint. HARDtalk is my favourite journalist platform. Well done Angie!

This interview wasn’t a very hard talk. He just handed softballs, disappointing.

América police nice good i respecto a lot
ANGIE'S RIGHT! I know I say this being white but STILL! HER BOOKS SHOULD "ABSOLUTELY" BE TAUGHT OR USED IN SCHOOLS! I WILL BE USING THE HATE U GIVE FOR COURSEWORK NEXT YEAR, comparing how racism is presented in the hate u give compared to Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Angie taught me truth, she taught me understand of another race, I just want to say I have NEVER been racist. I see it as, "if I was black how would I want to be spoken to because of my race?" and it's obviously with respect and care.
