Tesla to spend $500 million on supercharger network expansion

- Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has big plans to expand the EV maker's Supercharger network by investing over $500 million into the project, according to a recent post on X. The irony lies in the fact that Tesla laid off a bulk of its Supercharger development team at the end of April.
Gartner Vice President and Team Manager of Automotives, Transportation, and Cross Manufacturing Mike Ramsey sits down with Catalysts to discuss Tesla's charging network strategy, calling the layoffs a "cost optimization effort as they try to get their operations in line"
"But, the investment in the network actually makes a lot of sense, and might be a real benefit to them in the long term as a new source of revenue," Ramsey tells Yahoo Finance.
Ramsey goes on to comment on Tesla's full self-driving capabilities in its vehicles; Tesla's Autopilot function is currently undergoing a probe by Department of Justice (DOJ) officials.
"What they're charging customers for is a partially automated system that is more like a convenience feature. It is not a self-driving vehicle, like something that Waymo is offering in the southeast United States and in San Francisco," Ramsey states. "So when Tesla talks about this service improving and rolling out, they are not really playing in the same field as many of the, I would say, fully autonomous robocab-type providers are playing. That said, their system keeps getting better and better and they can make money selling it because it's a nice feature and that people like to have, and... Tesla has promised that in August they're going to unveil their new robocab that can... essentially be a full self-driving vehicle. My expectation is that vehicle will not be the same thing that you and I can buy..."

Recently bought some recommended stocks and now they are just penny stocks. There seems to be more negative portfolios in the last 3rd half of 2023 with markets tumbling, soaring inflation, and banks going out of business. My concern is how can the rapid interest-rate hike be of favor to a value investor, or is it better avoiding stocks for a while?
Just ''buy the dip'' man. In the long term it will payoff. High interest rates usually mean lower stock prices, however investors should be cautious of the bull run, its best you connect with a well-qualified adviser to meet your growth goals and avoid blunder
The truth is that this is really not as difficult as many people presume it to be. It requires a certain level of diligence, no doubt, which is something ordinary investors lack, and so a financial advisor often comes in very handy. My friend just pulled in more than $84k last month alone from his investment with his advisor. That is how people are able to make such huge profits in the market
How can I participate in this? I sincerely aspire to establish a secure financial future and am eager to participate. Who is the driving force behind your success?
ANGELA LYNN SCHILLING' is her name. She is regarded as a genius in her area and works for Empower Financial Services. She’s quite known in her field, look-her up.
Thank you for this tip. It was easy to find your coach. Did my due diligence on her before scheduling a phone call with her. She seems proficient considering her resume.
He conflates FSD with Autopilot... then saying Waymo is ahead... he has absolutely no idea..... what a clown.
Without any employees. Genius!
He fired a bunch of employees from twitter/X too and that is still around and thriving
He did not fire the employees who install the chargers. I am a shareholder and these layoffs makes sense in the long run. Q2 and Q3 will show improvements to margins and TSLA will push higher.
Elon: "Release. The Bots." 🤣
Why do people cry whenever a company has lay-offs? It is normal.
Laid off 14k people, yet Tesla hired over 40k people between 2021-2023. Not genius, just a modicum of business sense.
Spin it all you want but flip flopping Elon can't hide from critical thinkers who know what's up.
If you mean classical thinkers who have been trained to think in only one direction... like your MBA types... when they come up against someone truly intelligent they have no clue what is happening. Didnt they all say that sacking 80% of Twitter staff would mean it would stop working in 3 days they said. He dismissed the entire Starlink staff in 2018... with no sats in space.. there are now 6,000 up there.
While "Critical thinkers" can't even run a lemonade stand

What's up?
The guy has completely lost the plot, even the fanbois must be wondering wtf is going on.
Fanboys think that on 8/8 Musk will announce revolutionary product or service that is actually available for purchase.
If they believe that, then I have a Hyperloop to sell them.
Naw, the fanbois are still finding ways to defend their golden boy, Elon.
Who will be doing it if they fired everybody from the team?
Here is my two cents, the expansion they are referring to is not really an expansion but a remodeling of current superchargers, why? because they are pushing autonomy and probably the new chargers will be able to somehow charge the driverless car.
Managers, and hangers on to managers do not install anything... they just hold pointless meetings.
It was from the design and management team not the manufacturing plant.
It's business strategy. Fire those with very high salary. Hire interns. Profit.
@rontheoracle Does not sound that there is a contigentency plan. Supercharger business is dead man walking. Businessmen are not innovators. They sell only existing product line.
Omg this guy is sooo wrong on many items he talked too.
This guy has no clue what he’s talking about.
Very true. The sad part is people believe what he is saying, which is inaccurate information that he has read somewhere and is repeating or it is something he has made up (from his perspective). Tesla is manufacturing most of their technology to have complete control over their software and hardware (much like Apple).
You’re absolutely right but it definitely has gotten much better in the past few months. I have been using it for the past two months and it is impressive. Sure it not 100% yet but I barely have to disengage anymore .
Wtf is this guy doing??? he fired 500 people in the division and now he said he’s going to put $500 million in the division. Is he trolling?
I think what's going on here is that money is going to a remodeling of the existing superchargers to be able to charge autonomous robotaxis if im not mistaken
AI they are no longer needed. They are expandable to the plan. Remember the Car is a computer. Telling the main frame what you and the car are doing. They said it right here. Listen to what he said
@@Alpharizzchad He fired around 500 people in the charging division, to then invest 500 million to expand the charging network. What does that have to do with AI? AI can’t build the charging machines.
@@chakmiss I can understand that but again my point is then why fire 500 people in that division if you planning on investing 500 million into that division?
@@Dmindthinker011 Because it is a different system they’re building, it’s a system to be able to charge autonomous cars, my guess is they are not going to expand as previously planed but redesign current charging stations, for that they need money and not as many people on the team. They didn’t fire the whole team, a big part yes, but it’s like a startup, for now they need a lot of cash and not as many people on the team, eventually if autonomy is a success they will hire much more people.
...$400m will be used replacing the people Elon laid off (sarcasm).
Good sarcasm... if you are not already I herby anoint you as British

Why shouldn't China match any tariffs the US puts on Chinese EVs % for %?
I don't think it matters. USA not selling to China at the same low price as domestic companies even so the tariffs. It is China that wants to enter the US.
Why did the interviewing lady change mid interview? I thought when it switched back a third time the interviewer was gonna be someone in a Clifford The Big Red Dog suit.
She got fired
I’m so stunned at this guy. Waymo way ahead? Wow.

Bad comparison. But you don't marry everyday. You can hire a professional photographer once in a while but not everyday. Those expensive equipment can't be integrated in our cars without increasing price by 30k$. So they are competing with each, they are in different categories. Also expensive equipment does not mean that they are safe, we have seen what happened with cruise.
I dont have radar and I can drive with my eyes... vision... vision is fine it is interpreting what you see that is the hard part so having loads of radar and cameras just to tell you there is a tree across the road does not help unless your brain tells you that you see a tree across the road and then how to react
He said they know what they are doing!? Lol Who is he talking about? The 500 employees that got fired. The writing is on the wall for Tesla ✍️
Which people got fired. What were they doing? Were they the engineers that design the chargers? Were they the installers? Or were they people who had served their purpose but were no longer driving the company i.e. their goals had been achieved and they had lost the drive to come up with meaningful new goals and were just treading water, pootling along in cushy jobs but adding very little?
this Mike guy cracks me up. "It's not a self driving vehicle" yet my tesla literally drove me all the way to the store and back through heavy traffic and road construction without any interventions. I feel bad for the people watching this video who think they are getting an accurate informed opinion. Tesla is so far ahead of everyone with FSD and yet this video makes it seem like they are behind.
While I'm not an EV guy, I have to admit that the video of a Tesla FSD 'almost' without intervention made its way around New York City's downtown areas.
Musk gonna hire a bunch of Tesla bots😅
🤥 Coming "next year," trust me bro.

MIke Ramsy was correct on the Charging Network expansion, but his good information ends there. The rest, (after the 2:50 mark), is laughable.
He was introduced as an "expert". I think he is an "ex-spurt", has been when it comes to FSD and Tesla production, even in China.
Mike Ramsy and the interviewer has no idea how AI is accelerating and therefore how close FSD is. He just isn't following the progress. Waymo is be a bad joke in a year, two tops. He also has no idea about anything. China vehicles may have cheaper vehicles with some bells and whistles but people driving them say they are poorly manufactured, noisy, and just cheap in quality.

I strongly disagree with this segment. Tesla is light years beyond any company doing FSD. The data advantage alone that Tesla possesses far outweighs any other competitor. This is clearly a hit piece , lacking factual reporting.

Remember Apple just started filming their events with the iPhone😢
Tesla is a negative growth, meme, hype and dream stories company; the stock should be in a trading range. The hope, dream and Elon Religion should push its stock higher, but only to a certain degree; once every 3 months, it will report another negative growth, negative cash flow, more layoffs, followed by more empties promises. Since the cheaper Model is really a lower cost model 3, it is likely to kill the Model 3/Y sales, just like Model 3/Y killed the Model S/X sales. Unfortunately China is 60% of the global EV market, Tesla reminds me of Samsung, once a dominating premium smartphone players, lost the market to local competitors. Chinese EV market will only get tougher, as several totally newly designed lower cost models are coming to the market late 2024 and 2025. Top Chinese EV brands refresh their products once every 15 to 18 months, Tesla has not redesigned its aging products since 2017. There is definitely a look-and-feel fatigue about Tesla's Model 3/Y in China.
tesla is going to fall in China pretty soon, just like almost all other foreign car companies. The only car companies that can sustain are luxury ones that 99.999% of us are not buying. SEA, EU and South America are also getting competitive. The only market that Tesla can realistically grow in sale is NA. Realistically they are screwed, only thing that can save tesla right now is hope and dream. The stock is not going anywhere for the next 2 years in the best-case scenario.
You will miss out on some great returns. All you said was correct but can you compare any other car manufacturer that are doing better? Tesla is still beating the pack....look at VW, Stellantis, Nissan, Honda, GM, Ford.... Reply with the same DD you did on Tesla with these others.

Elon Has been promising fully autonomous Teslas "next year," since 2016. Doesn’t it seem like Musk had an incentive to be overly optimistic in his presentations to investors about FSD - in order to hit his ridiculously ambitious compensation package numbers?
Elon’s pay package (that is in legal limbo at the moment) was based mostly on the increase in $TSLA market cap - not how many cars are sold or how profitable Tesla is. @ConsistentlyAwkward Tesla experimented with and choose not to implement lidar because it was extra cost that only served to confuse the AI (too many sensor-input conflicts). Elon even warned competitors not to waste time on this route. Much better (especially long-term) to train AI solely on camera-eyes (like humans).
