  • In this thrilling episode, Josh, Tim, and I break away from the Te Araroa Trail to tackle the challenging Northern Crossing in the Tararuas. The Northern Crossing is known for its rugged terrain and breathtaking views, making it a must-do for any adventurous hiker, in good weather!
However, the weather took a dramatic turn for the worse, and we found ourselves navigating sketchy ridges, climbing steep cliffs, and descending a 50-rung ladder in the midst of a storm. The conditions were so intense that I ended up with early-stage hypothermia, but thankfully, we made it to a hut where I could warm up.
We took a much-needed zero day in the hut, waiting for the weather to clear. Once the skies brightened, we carried on through the Goblin Forest to Nichols Hut, ready for the next part of our adventure.
This episode is packed with adrenaline and showcases the raw beauty and challenges of the Tararuas. Don’t miss it!

That must be a really great and challenging trail to hike on a beautiful day. Of course even more challenging and dangereous on the dat you did it. I'm glad you had a hut at the end and that you decided to stay out there a day.
Mother Nature can be in predictable.
    Good one Lauren! 😊

I couldn’t do what you do. Not sure if I’d want to do what you do. But I love watching you do what you do.
Another great video. Stay safe. Happy trails.

Glad you made it to that hut. The Tararuas are dangerous, and I'm surprised that you filmed it in those conditions, honestly.

What a section to hike! I'd be on all fours dragging my pack on those slopes. The WIND!! Great to see you all made it with a smile on your face. Happy hiking and thanks for taking us along on your "detour" hike.

I was definitely crawling in some sections when the drop offs on each side got too steep! There were more than I few times I slipped and fell as well. It was treacherous out there! Glad you enjoyed coming along for the ride.

Perfect time to be down to one pole! Not dangerous at all... note to self: don't let your mom see this episode! Those ridges were insane and that Goblin Forest? Come on!

I know you don't mind solo hiking but what a great time having two people along to entertain you, help film, and keep you going when it's raining and cold!!!

Absolutely! I was very glad to do this with those two, and so nice to have some help filming it- I never would have gotten so much footage without them!

You can see even in the north it can turn.
North of there the police sgt in charge of search and rescue was organising some training in hills for manawutu staff.
He had to be rescued as weather turned on him

Thats quite an adventurous detour right through the center of the range but if you've got above average fitness/experience, bit of extra food then its quite worth it. 1 day of fine weather in the Tararua's (thus far) isn't bad; I think in the history of hiking up there literally NO ONE has had fine weather the whole time (or even a lot of the time!)
