International cricket shld not have monopoly on players' time...
When sehwag and Sachin were playing for india, any other opening batsman in India above 20 yrs can be sure that they won't be able to play for india for atleast either one of them retires.
But now even though gill and Rohit pretty much seal the opening spot of World Cup, still there are 20 job opportunities for opening batsman in IPL alone. This is the way frwd for this sport

If IPL like tournament were in Australia or England, these same experts would defend it calling it evolution of game crossing borders and nations. Freedom of players to choose their career, and critics with same arguments would be called as hyper nationalists. The real pain is they are not part of money made in IPL.

The problem is not ipl, the problem is how players view the fundamental spirit of the game. Despite ipl the world test championship has created the most competetive Indian test team possibly ever in the history of the game - because money isnt everything if the players have the spirit of the game.
As for smaller nations, best example are teams like afghanistan or netherlands as we saw during the odi world cup. More nations are joining cricket and taking it seriously as a modern sport all because of t20. They excel beyond expectaions because they have the thirst of victory and embody the spirit of competetiveness. If this has decayed within traditional bastions like west indies then it is a commentary on their systems of cricket administration rather than the format of t20. Change is inevitable but those with sound fundamental values can survive any change...

These people always have a holier than thou approach regarding cricket. There's always a caveat involved in their compliment. And according to them the bygone era was better when players had absolutely no control over how much money they can make and the only place to be a professional was England and after a grueling season players were paid peanuts. Cricket has been considered a "gentleman 's game" but that is not necessarily a compliment (although some do). It was elitist game designed for the leisure of few. I think the problem with them complaining about T20 and money in general is that they feel that they are loosing the "exclusivity" to the masses. I always consider people complaining about Test cricket dying as a sign of insecurity of the elites and an idea deeply rooted in colonialism.

He’s basically saying India has become the biggest money maker in cricket and obviously has larger control over the game and that’s not good for the came. It will be great if it was England or at least any other white country. Mellow racism y’all!

T20 was meant to be entertainment rather than pure cricketing battle. It was meant to bring in money and fame. And boy it succeeded in that.
I agree that focus should be to keep red ball cricket alive, which is actually what cricket is. But you gotta have money for that.
The only reason cricket is catching up in USA, Canada, UAE and so many other countries is because of the money involved.

The fan following in test matches of india are equally good. The fact that if your country is playing good cricket, every format is watched.
Indians still consider twst cricket as top of the industry.

New fans in 2024 are not going to get into a sport where a match lasts several days and even going to watch lasts for an entire day.
Every other major sport can be viewed from start to finish within a couple of hours. Personally I like test cricket but I’m not blind to the fact that it’s not the future of the sport. T20 is the best thing to ever happen to cricket.

He's right on spot with the observation. But I think the conclusion is to impose stricter financial regulations.
Cricket will grow bigger with or without such regulations. But we as a cricket community are at such a point in this beautiful game's life that if we desire, we can make it extremely inclusive with many countries taking part. T20 is the key to it and if proper financial regulations are imposed to aim wider audience and sources of investment (as opposed to concentrated sources of investment), it can go a long way.❤

The truth is that cricket can't spread its wings via test cricket..Also not that many want to watch bilateral white ball internationals, especially 50 over ODI's.
Further ,the IPL will expand a lot more and will be longer than 2 months and have more teams down the line.
So,the international game will comprise tests and the 20 over world cup every two years. Bilaterals will be more like friendlies or stuff that Association nations play.

Don't blame T20 and IPL for gross mismanagement by the WI cricket boards and NZ cricket board.
WI cricket has been in decline since 90's, well before either T20 or IPL was even thought of.
It's become fashionable to blame everything on IPL.

Cricket is a convenience for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka. It is basically a game of skill and a minimum level of fitness is required. Even Inzamam ul Haq and Rohit Sharma types have become world champions scoring tons, with their level of fitness. If you can't bowl fast go for spin, running between the wickets in your own timing. In batting ball comes to you. Opponent never stretches you in Speed, stamina and fitness. It is never neck to neck fight in skill, speed, stamina, and fitness. Whereas in games like Soccer, hockey, basketball, tennis, rugby, track and field it requires enormous amount of speed, stamina, fitness and skill. Opponent stretches you in all these parameters. To beat Bolt you have to be like him in not only skill, but you have to be more in Speed, stamina and fitness, than him. So is with Maradona, Ronaldo, Phelps, Michael Jackson Nadal, Djokovic etc. People from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc play cricket out of convenience. This is the reason even though soccer, basketball and other games are popular in Europe and US, but there also people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc settled for generations, play cricket only. These countries have made this lazy game their religion and are zero in all the other games which require speed, stamina, and fitness. British don't pride in cricket, they are soccer gaints. So are Australia, South Africa, New Zealand etc They are world class in soccer, rugby, track and field, swimming etc. If we combine cricket playing population of India , it is going to be even more than the population of Australia, England, South Africa etc combined, then also are not dominant. Cannot produce heros in games requiring speed, stamina and fitness, India Pakistan Bangladesh Srilanka etc try to search heros in lazy game of cricket. You talk of Bolt, they will bring cricketer to compare, You talk of Pele they will talk of cricketer, you talk of Nadal and Federer they will talk of cricketer. You talk of Michael Jordan they will talk of cricketer. Cannot rise in tough games, Indians have become ambassador of the lazy game of cricket, Cricket mad nation can never be sporting nation. It's an attitude. Japan and Korea wants to compete with top developed nations and make their presence felt be it technology, economy and games. Today they are among top world class footballers alongside European giants. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka are vying amongst themselves in a lazy game cricket and totally zero in games requiring speed,, stamina and fitness.

If some players choose money over International matches new players will get picked to represent the country. The circle will move on.

Until & unless domestic cricket is not considered as bread & butter by national administrators & they don't try to monetise it, they'll never be able to get sufficient traction for their national teams. Its exactly how local administrative bodies for cities & towns should be empowered to have balanced growth & development of a province or a state. No amount of international bilaterals are going to make the game relevant, it will only lead to loss of interest globally because national pride becomes the fuel for interest in something as elementary as sports.

Cricket will become like football for good. No silly bilateral series, they should have 1 worldcup every 4 years and then just t20 premiere leagues around world, odi and tests should be phased out slowly as they are not suited for this generation only for grey hair men. Stars like kohli rebooted charm of tests and it also resulted in ashes gaining popularity with virat no longer being the captain tests will also die soon and so called ashes will also die once players sign up to multiple premiere leagues around world, it takes a little longer until all grey hair men are gone from admin and private money takes over icc and bcci.

A Players value in franchise cricket come 4m the nation it represents atleast in initial days till they establish their position as players in franchise. A players national identity comes when they come up with the attitude n mindset and training of that national cricket environment, so nations playing vital role here. Now the more n more franchise cricket get popular, we gonna see less of International n bilateral matches but this rarity will give boast to International matches because let's be honest ppl love when national identity fights. It's just pick your players talent wise not popularity wise have control over them, and most importantly don't cry about it rather do marketing on it as if you are representing Nations..
