This. My mother's trauma doesn't excuse the way she treated me. I understand it but that doesn't make it any better.

I feel like the point of the poem is understanding not excusing. The poem is written from the perspective of an adult child realizing their abusive parent wasn’t just evil. Their parent was also traumatized and repeating cycles. It also is written in a way that implies their parent is dead. I feel like this adds a sense of longing in the poem. Like “I wish I had understood sooner to let myself have peace”
Idk 🤷‍♂️ that’s just my opinion. I do see how you read your understanding of the poem
