FM radio was amazing when it was new. Everyone was used to static over the airways , especially when weather was threatening. When a car with AM radio went under any overpass, or through a tunnel, parking garage, the radio cut out. FM changed all that. The line no static at all is about that improvement, and how nice it was to listen to FM. Plus, Am was short songs. It was so cool to listen to longer cuts or whole album sides when FM was new.
I'm old, but wasn't around either when there were any AM radio broadcasts here. Scandinavian countries went all FM in the 1950s. One of the few upsides of a large state and a degree of socialism, I guess.
I was at a Romanian gathering in southern Ontario several years ago. The cousin on one of the people I was with was playing clarinet in the Romanian group on stage. The guy was slumped in a chair most of the time, almost comatose from all the booze he had, cigarette with an impossibly long ash hanging out of his mouth. But every time it was his turn to play he was up, standing on a table in front of the stage. Never missed a beat and was phenomenal. To me, that heart is in every sax and clarinet player. A popular sax player from many, many years ago is Earl Bostic,
Cee, Their "Deacon Blues", "Josie", and "Kid Charlemagne" are next for you!! Steely Dan was basically Donald Fagen -lead vocals, keyboards, songwriter and Walter Becker - Guitar, bass, backing vocals. They added in lots of great studio musicians/guest musicians. RIP Walter Becker.
Quote attributed to Steve Gadd "Fills bring the thrills but groove pays the bills." And by the way I'm still waiting for you to check out Tower of Power. Ask your dad.
Great video. I love you enthusiasm, you’re love of music and your expertise in it. And of course I’m really digging that you’re into Steely Dan - my favorite band with not even a close second. If you want to have a mind blowing funk and rock experience, try Kid Charlemagne
Now you need to check out Donald Fagan's solo album "The Nightfly" Its as good as the Steely Dan records. There isn't a bad song on the album. The title track "The Nightly is very jazzy will be one of your favorites.
I remember working in a record store in 1982. My manager came up to me with Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly". "Listen to this" he said. It wasn't a suggestion... Through that record I tracked back to Steely Dan and that catalouge of greatness. Thanks to people like my manager you discover artists which you might otherwise have overlooked.
I remember having a car that only had an AM radio and no FM, so when I got a car with an AM/FM radio and cassette player I was excited. Granted I did like the oldies station on the AM channel. That was were I would listen to songs from the 40's, 50's and 60's.
The drummer is Jeff Porcaro better known as a founding member of the band Toto. He was also a session drummer who played in this track but was not part of Steely Dan
Jeff Porcaro on drum & percussion.....the dude they always called when they needed to knock a tune out quickly, for whatever reason. The drum-doctor didn't mess around & brought everyone's game up & on point. That's it we're done see ya later. Man, he's as sadly missed as John Bonham. He was that good. .
Ja, love what you did with the adding of both song endings together. Perfect transition from guitar solo to the sax. I downloaded this video und pulled the MP3 from it to save. I've thought about joining both endings as well. Good work, like it much, und thanks for taking the time und your effort. Much appreciated. :-)
FM radio played the longer versions of songs - it was the only place you could hear the whole In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida in one chunk. AM radio was a slave to the time slot and commercials. FM was especially great late at night. Ah, youthful memories!
Fave Steely Dan song. It is funky jazz. Love every note. I can tell that this is right up your alley, musically speaking. Mine too. I listen to a lot of hard rock and metal, but no one can deny the talent of Steely Dan. You'd have to be tone deaf.
This “fan-maximized” mix of the track with both outro’s included was the wise choice, here. It’s so good, I’m surprised that Walter and Donald didn’t do it this way themselves.
EXCELLENT editing--this is now officially my favorite version of FM! Thanks for posting! If you are into drumming and haven't heard Aja yet, you are missing out. 4 and a half minutes to the first drum & saxophone solo, then at the very end of the song another AMAZING drum solo by the one and only Steve Gadd.
Been listening to this since it came out. Had no idea about the other versions. Thanks for the education AND the sax version. I really enjoy your channel.
I know you are a drum fan. You have got to check out their track "Aja" title track of the album with the same name (obviously!). Some brilliant drumming fro Steve Gadd. You will love it!
There’s another band that uses an iconic saxophone, Hall & Oates have been blessed with Mr. Charley DeChant. He’s worth checking out. Fourteen #1 hits as a duo, H & O are another ‘money in the bank’ band. Charley plays other wind instruments too, and has been in the band nearly all of its existence...50 ish years. Terrific stuff!
My dad bought a brand new 1969 Chevy Caprice that included an FM Stereo radio. We could not believe the sound it produced. I used to sit for hours in that car in the garage listening to WDVE in Pittsburgh - at least until dad chased me out for running down the battery ! LOL
I have the DoLP and I like all the songs but especially the SD songs. Theire songs are just so special for me. Best regards from hamburg (germany) @all.
Three Dog Night is an American rock band formed in 1967, with founding members consisting of vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. This lineup was soon augmented by Jimmy Greenspoon (keyboards), Joe Schermie (bass), Michael Allsup (guitar), and Floyd Sneed (drums). You have forgotten about them.......I want you to react to "Woman(audio)" by Three Dog Night.
Excellent reaction ! I love hearing a musician's point of view. This song is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. One cannot put Steely Dan in a box or a specific genre. There are many forms of jazz. It has unique stylings. I am thankful that Fagan and Becker chose to meld different stylings in their songs. They had a huge influence on my discovery of jazz. One of the major factors in their songs is the mixing and engineering. It's so "clean". They were able to bring up and layer the different instruments to their own style. I suppose there is not such thing as musical perfection but these guys got close. They got "in the pocket" and stayed there. Not an easy thing to do.....
Thanks again man for spreading the word about pop music‘s most prolific unique sophisticated yet accessible duo! Maybe you haven’t discovered Donald Fagen’s 4 solo albums which are very jazzy and part of Steely Dan‘s catalog too? Happy listening!
Got to see The Dan for the first time in Tuscaloosa in early May.We had to weave our way through the huge mounds of debris covering most of the city after a massive tornado destroyed a large part of the city. When they did Deacon Blue, the line , They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, took on a different meaning knowing that all around almost 70 people had been killed. Many probably had tickes to this show. It was a fantastic show but everyone seemed to be somber at best. It was kinda like having a concert in a cemetery.
Looking back through your videos I'm quite shocked you haven't done Aja yet after listening to your review/reaction. It really should be next. Keep on keepin on...
Crystal Blue Persuasion by "Tommy James and the Shondells"... You'll love it! But nothing wrong with Steeley Dan at all (Time Out of Mind & Hey Nineteen from Gaucho) The whole Aja album is priceless.
This is the one song of theirs I don't have because it wasn't on any of their albums. It was recorded during the same sessions as their those from their album Aja but wasn't released until the soundtrack to the movie FM. It was subsequently released in their greatest hits album. It features Jeff Porcaro (of Toto) on drums and members of the Eagles on backing vocals.
my favorite thing about this track is actually the strings. you kind of don't really notice them but they are so beautifully mixed and impactful without us really noticing it until you listen for them. sounds so good.
Hey love your channel. I'm a percussionist myself. Played trap set and marched tritoms in Marching band. I love the Sax wishing I could play it also one of my fav. instruments. The other that gives me a lot of emotion is the Chelo. Wish I would have taken that up. Keep up the work.
This is my favorite!!! My uncle had a Plymouth Fury 3 with push button transmission...he had a record player mounted under the dash that played a stack of 45s ...cause AM radio was awful....thanks Chod for remembering our great music 💖😊
The Soundtrack from the Movie of the same name "FM" is the best ever soundtrack, IMHO. SEE BELOW: Track listing - cassette release *Side A* "FM (No Static at All)" - Steely Dan - 4:52 "Night Moves" - Bob Seger - 3:27 "Fly Like an Eagle" - Steve Miller Band - 3:04 "Cold as Ice" - Foreigner - 3:20 "Livingston Saturday Night" - Jimmy Buffett - 3:10 "Bad Man" - Randy Meisner - 2:38 "Life in the Fast Lane" - Eagles - 4:46 "Breakdown" - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - 2:44 "Just the Way You Are" - Billy Joel - 4:49 "Lido Shuffle" - Boz Scaggs - 3:42 "More Than a Feeling" - Boston - 4:45 *Side B* "Tumbling Dice" - Linda Ronstadt - 4:51 (Live Version) "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" - Linda Ronstadt - 4:15 (Live Version) "Do It Again" - Steely Dan - 5:54 "There's a Place in the World for a Gambler" - Dan Fogelberg - 5:41 "It Keeps You Runnin'" - The Doobie Brothers - 4:13 "Your Smiling Face" - James Taylor - 2:43 "Life's Been Good" - Joe Walsh - 8:05 "We Will Rock You" - Queen - 2:04 "FM - Reprise" - Steely Dan - 2:54 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A bad movie with a great soundtrack. "Back in the olden days" ;-D AM radio was king. It was the only type of radio in cars, on transistor radios and it was the only place to hear popular music. The FM channels were only used for classical music, NPR type broadcasting and some foreign language broadcasting. AM had more power over distance, so reached a larger number of people. FM carried more rich and complex sounds, which is part of why classical music was there. When rock music became more complex and was breaking away from the AM disc jockey control of music, FM radio stations were a cheap and readily available format. There were dozens of little FM stations all over the place, in part because they didn’t have the range for one station to dominate. So evolving rockers rented time on (or sometimes got free access to) these stations. FM dj’s would often just put an LP record on to play the whole side, kick back, smoke a blunt and groove. We lived a couple of blocks from an underground radio station like that in the early 70s. We’d go over and hang with the dj’s some nights. Lovely memory.
Wow. Even though I know the song well. I had to wiki it to find out who did that sick sax solo at the end. Pete Christlieb. What surprised me me was that 3 members from the Eagles were singing harmony. I know mike McDonald was on 'Peg'.
You had to buy a FM radio add-on and self-install on the bottom of the dashboard. That was the crucial hookup and stations were laying so much 70s classic rock, especially the commercial free college DJs who played full albums.
I love watching drummers. Two of my favorites were into the dance music of their time. John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was big into Motown. Dave Grohl is a huge fan of disco, especially Tony Thompson.
Forgot how good this song is. Enjoyed your saxophone comments, :-) there’s truth to that.. they have so many more good songs awaiting you. I’m excited to follow your journey with Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.
Yes...Steely Dan is not a person......it is the name of the group...and it is about time....I requested this in November 2020 and December 2020.....and I got NO...NO....response...and now finally after Pink Floyd....Led Zeppelin.......Rolling Stones and others...you come back to Steely Dan's most funkiest Soulful song EVER!!! Congrads on the Ear Candy. Your ears are going to die of sweetness!!!!! Hhahahaahhahaaha....lol.....hahahahahhaaha

I remember before there was pop music on FM it was nothing but classical music - which was because the fidelity of FM was so much better than AM
And that’s when car stereos exploded
The Band you always wished existed, but did not know existed. Enjoy, this is like Deacon Blues, meets Josie, Love SD
Excepting your 70's pre-existent presence.....ode to the supercool of The Dan
There's a great saying, "Steely Dan is your favorite bands favorite band."
Anything Steely Dan is worthy.
Actually, the only question with Steely Dan is whether the listener is worthy.
Chod is most worthy.
You just can't go wrong with Steely Dan.
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker really nailed it with SD.
Lol. What a piece of music. A fusion of jazz and rock like no other. Damn.
Steely Dan never misses! Every track is an absolute gem and a classic right off the bat. Timeless, beautiful and elegant!
Tho this song came out as a single for a movie in 1978, I consider it a bonus to Aja.
You weren't around when there was only AM radio. It was a horrible time, lol. Steely Dan always sound so smooth. Check out Deacon Blues.
I'm old, but wasn't around either when there were any AM radio broadcasts here. Scandinavian countries went all FM in the 1950s. One of the few upsides of a large state and a degree of socialism, I guess.
The range of genius tunes from this group cannot be compared to any other group. Steely Dan is as new today as it was 45 years ago!

I HAVE LISTENED TO STEELY DAN SINCE 1972,THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG BY THEM...STONE.COLD.CLASSIC.
My favorite Steely Dan song. I know when your liking what your hearing...that smile lights up your whole face!
Getting chills just watching you enjoying this classic.
Keep cooking.....because there will never be another Steely Dan!....Im glad you understand them...most dont get it!
Such a funky tune! Love me some Steely Dan! 💚
Incredibly great edited version of this song with epic solo extensions. Thank you for presenting this.
Quote attributed to Steve Gadd "Fills bring the thrills but groove pays the bills." And by the way I'm still waiting for you to check out Tower of Power. Ask your dad.
"So Very Hard To Go" is my favorite of theirs. Killer group, way underrated.
You're Still a Young Man, by Tower of Power is also a good one.
@@talltulip What is Hip? Bump City

They never disappoint. Love Steeley Dan, been a fan since day one
Nephew!!! You have just been given the funk of a different flavor!
You have to do The Royal Scam. Not single song will be skipped, its that 🔥🔥🔥
Great video. I love you enthusiasm, you’re love of music and your expertise in it. And of course I’m really digging that you’re into Steely Dan - my favorite band with not even a close second. If you want to have a mind blowing funk and rock experience, try Kid Charlemagne
I've been watching your reactions all morning to all my favorite 70's tunes. I'm really enjoying myself. Great reactions. Keep them coming. I'm a fan!
Now you need to check out Donald Fagan's solo album "The Nightfly" Its as good as the Steely Dan records. There isn't a bad song on the album. The title track "The Nightly is very jazzy will be one of your favorites.
I still have that album on vinyl when I first bought it in 1982, still sounds great even today.
My vote goes to MAXINE on that album; the signature and mandatory sax solo on this cut is SUH-WEET 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great to hear this again, Steely Dan were in my record collection and sound even better now. Brilliant arrangement.
I remember having a car that only had an AM radio and no FM, so when I got a car with an AM/FM radio and cassette player I was excited. Granted I did like the oldies station on the AM channel. That was were I would listen to songs from the 40's, 50's and 60's.

Great words.
According to Mr. Porcaro himself it was his best track for SD.
The groove here is a snakey killer.
Ja, love what you did with the adding of both song endings together.
Perfect transition from guitar solo to the sax. I downloaded this video und
pulled the MP3 from it to save. I've thought about joining both endings as well.
Good work, like it much, und thanks for taking the time und your effort. Much appreciated. :-)

Fantastic version! Thanks for reacting to this one.
Love the extended solo at the end. Way cool.
This “fan-maximized” mix of the track with both outro’s included was the wise choice, here. It’s so good, I’m surprised that Walter and Donald didn’t do it this way themselves.
EXCELLENT editing--this is now officially my favorite version of FM! Thanks for posting!

This mix is so good I say we should officially dub it the official FIFTH VERSION of FM!
One of my late brothers favorite bands. Reminds me of hanging at his place listening to his big Realistic stereo system. :)
Been listening to this since it came out. Had no idea about the other versions. Thanks for the education AND the sax version. I really enjoy your channel.
You got it lol ! All the great things in that song, the bass was unsung hero there !
62 years old & still jammin to old school Rock n Roll , San Antonio Texas
One word...."Peg" is a must by Steely Dan!
I know you are a drum fan. You have got to check out their track "Aja" title track of the album with the same name (obviously!). Some brilliant drumming fro Steve Gadd. You will love it!
Shocking how much great music I took for granted growing up! Thanks for the reminder!

STEELY DAN, "F.M. NO STATIC AT ALL"... NOW CHAD HOW GROOVY IS THAT...LOL...
My dad bought a brand new 1969 Chevy Caprice that included an FM Stereo radio. We could not believe the sound it produced. I used to sit for hours in that car in the garage listening to WDVE in Pittsburgh - at least until dad chased me out for running down the battery ! LOL
Steely Dan just sets a mood. One that I’ve always loved riding out, so smooth 🤘🤘
Musical sweet spot. Such a great mixture of rock jazz and RnB.
Yup Steely Dan, awesome. Deacon Blue is my favorite .
Another classic, just one of so many.
On the ‘Two Against Nature’ tour, Cornelius Bumpus of Doobie Brothers was the star in the horn section. He was a brilliant woodwind artist.
I have the DoLP and I like all the songs but especially the SD songs. Theire songs are just so special for me. Best regards from hamburg (germany) @all.
My all time favorite group, love watching your obvious enjoyment of their music.
Put a brand new AM-FM Radio in my dad's 1974 Ford Pinto Wagon. FM was great . This song always reminds me of my dad's car .
Loved in then, LOVE IT EVEN MORE NOW!
My Old School is a must! Followed by anything off the Kid Charlemagne album...Haitian Divorce, etc.

Always loved this, had the 12 inch with the sax instrumental version on the B side. Perfect.
Steely Dan, Babylon Sisters a MUST!!
YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED
Love FM. Thanks for reacting to it.
West of Hollywood by Steely Dan. SICK sax solo.
This whole soundtrack is amazing, from a movie of the same name. What a great rabbit hole to go down...
This is an interesting edit. I approve! You really can't go wrong with Steely Dan.
You enjoyed that so much your head almost snapped off , you appreciate the Good stuff👍
Allright!, more Steely Dan!
Soon as this starts up it lifts me. Fabulous track. Cannot go on long enough for me....,
You would appreciate the Phil Collins Big Band playing "Pick up the Pieces" They had about 5 famous sax players playing live.
Thanks for doing this with the edited transition so that we could hear both outros. Not sure I’ve heard that sax outro before.
my favorite thing about this track is actually the strings. you kind of don't really notice them but they are so beautifully mixed and impactful without us really noticing it until you listen for them. sounds so good.
Strings arranged by the great Johnny Mandel (The Shadow of Your Smile). Background vocals by The Eagles.
All those different versions, it always sounds good to me. No static at all!
Hey love your channel. I'm a percussionist myself. Played trap set and marched tritoms in Marching band. I love the Sax wishing I could play it also one of my fav. instruments. The other that gives me a lot of emotion is the Chelo. Wish I would have taken that up. Keep up the work.

Eternally Wonderful.Tune.
Love this song, haven't heard it in so long.
I've never seen or heard this extended version....thanks for sharing.
This is almost like Steely Dan does Pink Floyd. Excellent.
You had to buy a FM radio add-on and self-install on the bottom of the dashboard. That was the crucial hookup and stations were laying so much 70s classic rock, especially the commercial free college DJs who played full albums.
This drummer is so deep in the pocket they should call him Lint
Glad you found this version...it has all the goodness
Jeff Porcaro. The most popular drummer most people have never heard of. And what a drummer is supposed to be.
Can't go wrong with Steely Dan.FM(No static at all ) started me on that journey. The studio version is the best.
Roller Skating music for sure.
And you’ve still only scratched the surface of Steely Dan’s catalog more please
Got to hear STEVIE RAY VAUGHN
RIVIERA PARADISE (LIVE) A slow side of Stevie and that keyboard solo, amazing!!
I think you'd love 'My Old School', great guitar and horns.
I love watching drummers. Two of my favorites were into the dance music of their time. John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was big into Motown. Dave Grohl is a huge fan of disco, especially Tony Thompson.

Steely Dan perfect
Most everyone I knew had the Aja album back then. Very good music
John Mayer refers to the saxophone in his group as “The Bitch Whistle”!!
Also try "Hey 19" by Steely Dan. You'll love it.
