Del Toro had been working on his version for years. This looks like Disney couldn't let Del Toro take the spotlight alone with a story that Disney felt like it owned. Which is telling, and sad. And it was obviously an emotional decision, as they didn't put out a competitor until it was almost too late.

I was so burnt out by the work, i was running on fumes and only thing that kept me going was my respect for my leads, sup and production manager. I was SOOOO disappointed when I saw the movie, because how rushed the story felt. I never cared to know if I got credits in any film after this. And the amount of creative changes we were getting. God Disney's Pinocchio towards the end just looks like they literally ran out of budget so were like "Here....Do whatever you can with it." and just shoved it onto Disney+. Like it just FEELS so much like a direct to DVD movie. Meanwhile Del Toro's Pinocchio is a movie that RADIATES passion and love for the craft of animation.
My parents even watched it and they HARDLY ever watch animations anymore. Takes a lot of convincing. But they loved it. And I love it. It's a gorgeous movie. I loved how the Life and Death sisters were like these biblically accurate designs and the concepts of life and death and what makes life meaningful, and what makes family family and the voice work and just EVERYTHING about it is incredible. I can't believe studios didn't want to back it. Their loss.

It really makes me despise hollywood, it's hard to look forward to much besides the technical achievements always being made in VFX.
Just like with the state of video games, at least we have indies out there to give us some quality stuff. If only those people could get the real budgets...

Pinocchio: I honestly have to say that Guillermo's Pinocchio actually out-shined even the original Pinocchio movie, in terms of cinematic value. Not downplaying how beautifully animated the original was, but something about Del Toro's Pinocchio, the lovely songs and the amazing character designs, it just stuck with me a lot. Amazing movie, and I wanna see Del Toro produce even more animated/stop motion content (Yes I know he was in charge of Trollhunters; Trollhunters was amazing until the third season, we don't talk about 3Below, and Wizards was... all right).
Halo: I am absolutely BAFFLED at how badly they bungled it. I'm thankful I never watched it, but holy shit I didn't realize how bad the animation was. It looked like the episode in Halo Legends "The Package", except that animation was pure 3D and had an excuse to look like that, because it was stylized. And we don't even get into everything wrong with the story, but let me say this: YOU DON'T CUT SGT. JOHNSON. YOU *NEVER* CUT SGT. JOHNSON.

We painted, added details, and he even made custom parts for specific scenes. His amazing and it gave me an incredible respect to stop motion animators.

One thing you guys didn't note on in the video, but what really takes me out at times with the Disney one is the color grading. Like at 4:10 , look at the levels of saturation between Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio compared to the rest of the shot. The colors of the animated characters are popping off the screen, while the rest of the picture is very desaturated and grey. They don't look like they're in the same world at all. It could have been a deliberate choice at some point to make the animated characters feel like they're more "magical" and otherwordly, but it's just distracting with the otherwise photorealistic look.
Edit: I guess they probably talk about this in the extended version, but I'm not going to pay just to find out :P

As someone who has seen animated movies, I can honestly say that this is good.

Was watching Pandorum (2009) last week, it was an interesting watch. Some janky stuff with sped-up footage, but also some interesting little visual effects like a simple lazer razor that felt right at home in a spaceship.

I recently rewatched Constantine, and I think it has a couple of great shots and other descent shots. Specially the angel wings, those shots are still amazing! Definitly deserves a rewatch

Go guys. I would like to suggest you a challenge. Take old movie with practical effects and try to recreate it in cgi. Like Jason and Argonauts or Clash of Titans. What do you think?

The biggest tragedy about the Halo series is how fucking good the props are
Like the entire prop and costuming team did amazing only for literally everyone else to just drop the ball entirely

at 5:17 the water doplets on pinocchios legs are also very weird. They already look strange when the water is going back, but they just completely disappear after 2 seconds.. even the falling ones!

The original animated 101 Dalmations, the 90s/2000s remakes, and then the newest Cruella movie comparison of the dog animation would be really interesting, since it spans so much time and changes.
