It is true that Baba Gowon as i used to call him ,is always ready to serve Nigeria myself as Engr that carried him to 15 or more country for OAU transition to Africa Union in 2002 for 7 days ,when we got to Uganda that year he mention of the uganda of his overthrow .

Gowon was indeed a true leader. He loved the unity of this country. He experienced Nigerian civil war. He is a good person and all what he was after was the unity of one Nigeria. Thank you Yakubu Gowon
For us the Biafrans. He is a murder and he committed genocide. He forced unity on us with guns. He is not a true leader. IPOB has banned him in the south east.
Truth is Gowon is a great and likeable man. He knew he didn't stand a chance against those who betrayed him, so he had to do what he had to do. He was also quite smart enough not to return to the country. A year later, his boys still struck and had their revenge. Though he denied any involvement but Obasanjo didn't believe him. If OBJ had his way back then, he would hang him. Summary of it all, the military is such a vicious set-up, more like a dog-eat-dog one. You have to be a step ahead of your so-called colleagues to survive. Obasanjo was more or less the smartest of them all. He was of a "minority" in the Military as it was dominated by the northerners back in the days. To have ruled, smartly handed-over in 1979 without overstaying his welcome, survived till today and returned as a civilian president is a testament to his smartness. Don't get me wrong, these men are never saints. My write-up is strictly about the survival instincts and tactics of our past military leaders.
@@jaybeedeandowole4660 I hear you but obj is not a man of respect. He is a schemer like sheu musa and the likes. How are you so sure obj didn't participate in the Abortive coup of February 13 1976 which claimed the life of Mohammed.

Even after handing the country over to the politicians. The country's political situation worsened with the rigging of the election and insurgency. Gowon knew this and wanted to conduct a free and fair election. That's why he postponed his return to civil rule. Even so far, I think everybody would agree that the Gowon era was the golden age for the Nigerians. I humbly hope that a man such as Gowon will govern the country again to ensure a serene and well-developed country. He knew this when he delivered his independence speech in October 1974, quoted as saying "Politicians did not learn from their past mistakes". If his successors had enabled him to reach his potential, the country would not have fallen into the wrong hands as it is today. Had it not been for its overthrow, Nigeria would have been the greatest country in the world. It is painful to see that the civil system is much worse and more corrupt than the military system.😂😂😂
Our best head of state of Nigeria to date! Every other military head of state after him looked like a cheaply made replica ! Gowon was one man who the cap fitted properly!! 👊🏾🇳🇬👊🏾🇳🇬!
Watch from 3:36 to 4:09. All the key appointments/positions under Murtala Mohammed's regime were Northerners n Westerners. No one from the East/South. Yet this was a govt that pledged to re-integrate the East/South immediately after the civil war to give them a sense of belonging in a country driven primarily by a mineral resource generated largely in the East/South! Pls, what's the difference btw this act n the systemic racism that existed in the US when critical policy-making positions were occupied by whites only and had no African American?
True example of putting country above self
Creating space and resources for development of the dormant private sector for decades is welcome.
he has no choice .
He knows that Murtala Mohammed know all his secrets . so he can do nothing to him
He doesn't have a choice.
He was lucky to be outside the country when the coup took place.
What a great man. This is unheard of in this part of the World.
Just like Jonathan.
Thanks so much. 21 back when men where men
History is power
He is the best and will always remain the best.
Others would say he had no option in the circumstance.
Murtala bullied his way to his own grave
A statesman remains stable at the worst hours

Short and succinct. Great job!
I salute Yakubu Gowon
Are you yourself a Nigerian?
A patriot,a leader and a God fearing personality.
Really, he was silent while Innocent Igbos civilians were killed in the north. As a Yoruba man it means absolutely nothing to you. Well understood!!

He was a coward and his actions caused the country much pains till today !
Has Nigeria been United till today ?. He wanted to kill all Biafrans to keep Lugardian Contraption Nigeria One
@@paulsnoword8690 Well, i think coward will be appropriate for a man who ran and left his people in the midst of war which he was the reason for.
Yakubu Gowon was a true leader, a gentle man in nature. Not like Ojukwu who was arrogant and senseless power drunk. A coward
Great informative thanks for sharing with us stay connected

Obj doesn't have the right to hang an ex head of state (who was the first Nigerian four ⭐⭐⭐⭐ General). He was only envious of gowon...

Economic development is the forward by everyone. Engaging in serious commercial farming and mining should be on the agenda for senior citizens.

These are leaders without vision.
❤❤
Seems they just took power at will when it suited them.. change of government was as casual as change of Govt
You should let the voice of the person be heard, not yours.
Exactly.
Whenever there’s such speech, play the real voice!!

Not Nigeria Biafra war. It was a civil war in Nigeria 1967 to 1970.
