Gowon was indeed a true leader. He loved the unity of this country. He experienced Nigerian civil war. He is a good person and all what he was after was the unity of one Nigeria. Thank you Yakubu Gowon

Even after handing the country over to the politicians. The country's political situation worsened with the rigging of the election and insurgency. Gowon knew this and wanted to conduct a free and fair election. That's why he postponed his return to civil rule. Even so far, I think everybody would agree that the Gowon era was the golden age for the Nigerians. I humbly hope that a man such as Gowon will govern the country again to ensure a serene and well-developed country. He knew this when he delivered his independence speech in October 1974, quoted as saying "Politicians did not learn from their past mistakes". If his successors had enabled him to reach his potential, the country would not have fallen into the wrong hands as it is today. Had it not been for its overthrow, Nigeria would have been the greatest country in the world. It is painful to see that the civil system is much worse and more corrupt than the military system.😂😂😂

Truth is Gowon is a great and likeable man. He knew he didn't stand a chance against those who betrayed him, so he had to do what he had to do. He was also quite smart enough not to return to the country. A year later, his boys still struck and had their revenge. Though he denied any involvement but Obasanjo didn't believe him. If OBJ had his way back then, he would hang him. Summary of it all, the military is such a vicious set-up, more like a dog-eat-dog one. You have to be a step ahead of your so-called colleagues to survive. Obasanjo was more or less the smartest of them all. He was of a "minority" in the Military as it was dominated by the northerners back in the days. To have ruled, smartly handed-over in 1979 without overstaying his welcome, survived till today and returned as a civilian president is a testament to his smartness. Don't get me wrong, these men are never saints. My write-up is strictly about the survival instincts and tactics of our past military leaders.

Watch from 3:36 to 4:09. All the key appointments/positions under Murtala Mohammed's regime were Northerners n Westerners. No one from the East/South. Yet this was a govt that pledged to re-integrate the East/South immediately after the civil war to give them a sense of belonging in a country driven primarily by a mineral resource generated largely in the East/South! Pls, what's the difference btw this act n the systemic racism that existed in the US when critical policy-making positions were occupied by whites only and had no African American?
