Moral Orel has been a long requested show I've seen in the comments, and I can see why. This has got to be one of the darkest shows I've ever seen, to the point that it ended up getting cancelled during it's third season!

Hearing Orel say “I hate you” to his dad is the most powerful moment for me, since it shows the breaking point for Orel’s blind loyalty to his father.
Preliminary finally saw his Dad as he truly was, a drunken hypocrite. I was practically cheering for that moment.
He finally got his proof.
I remember this episode making me uncomfortable as a kid. I guess I just wasn't ready for it yet.
That line hit me so hard especially since clay didn’t even realize how out of character it was for his son to say thay

That is incredibly ironic (if not sad). When Orel made fun of dark topics, Adult Swim was okay with it. When they approached the topics seriously and meaningfully, that's too far apparently :/
Because Adult Swim whole schtick is dark HUMOR. When it started to get serious, Moral Orel's humor faded away and there's nothing left but the dark depressing of a show
I'm not saying that's bad, but it's kinda understandable for them not wanting that type of show in public
Tbf, this show was massively our of place compared to other shows from AS in its time. In the post-Bojack era, I'm sure it would at least have been moved somewhere more appropriate if not kept on the programming block
The show wasn't really supposed to be funny, it was supposed to be an anti Simpsons, start silly but get darker and realistic as it went on to make people be more aware

there's no kind of warning that prepares you for material like that.
It wasn’t getting too dark, it was getting too real.
In retrospect, its amazing to see how much of the satire is still apparent in religious communities (like being gay and still get married for social approval)
I can't really appreciate this show. I never saw it as "real." I have a very loving family - my parents would never act like the parents in this show.
Whenever I see people saying, "this show is too real," it makes me feel so sad. I'm sorry that you relate to this show.
@@elijahmeilak2906not every family is like orel’s, but what Orel tries to portray is the standardization of the nuclear family being ill-suited to handle the modern work pressures and the vices of individual. The whole family falls apart if it’s members aren’t truly concerned and loving of each other, and some people just haven’t figured out enough stuff in their lives to properly love one person, let alone everyone in the unit.
You completely miss what people mean by "real" then.
It's not about the accuracy of Orel's family or community of Moralton.
Its about the issues and subject matter.
Peter griffin and rick sanchez are "funny" alcoholics. Orel's dad is not, for example.

The thing about Clay is he was responsible for his mother's death by causing her to have a heart attack and his father would no longer interact with him, so Clay would purposefully antagonize his dad into scolding or striking him because it gave him the sense that he got his fathers attention, no matter if it was good or bad.
I noticed the exact same thing when watching the episode. I noticed a lot of people were still blaming Clay’s father for everything as if Clay had no control over it, but he certainly did. While yes, Clay was a child, he was going to do things that children do (ex. pranks or lack of awareness of certain things), but we also got to see two things not help with the situation: his mother and his natural narcissism. (Apologies fir how long this is)
•His mother had coddled and idolized him for being her only child to live past pregnancy, so much so she neglected her relationship with her husband. It’s very likely that she also raised him with the mindset that Clay could do no wrong and never actually parent him. In fact, we can probably see that she focused way too much on the positives in him to a point that she won’t even discipline him or tell him anything negative (hence his reaction to his dead siblings) that is quickly escalated to him pulling a suicide prank that would lead to his mother’s death.
•Then we get to Clay’s narcissism, and it is pretty obvious that he’s had it since a young age. We can argue that he may have developed it because of his mother or he was just born with it, we see him show the signs of it throughout the episode. We can see the obvious of it with his prank he pulled because we are shown minutes before it happened about Clay’s father warning him of his mother’s weak heart. So not only do we see Clay pull the prank as an attention behavior, but we also see his disregard of his mother’s well being after being told multiple times about it. But the less than obvious sign that people don’t notice (and from what you said about antagonizing his father) is that Clay purposely taunts and annoys him right after her death. Funerals are usually held a week or two after a person dies (at least in the US), so Clay’s father was still freshly grieving whilst taking care of his son. Even after losing his mother, Clay’s concern was that HE needed attention to himself so bad that he was taunting his father as he was trying grieve and even during the funeral.
•You also have to consider that parents do often times reach a breaking point and while now we encourage parents to call someone to take a break and take care of themselves so they don’t hurt their kids or themselves, it’s not an option everyone has. As far as we know, Clay and his dad probably didn’t have much family or at least any close for him to hand his kid to. So it’s possible he kept him because he had no choice. It’s likely possible that while parenting his child and grieving for his wife, he’s also now dealing with his child (who’s also old enough to know better) being difficult and making fun of dead wife and the whole situation. Any person would very likely snap in that situation, even though it’s wrong, it’s not undeniable with all that put together.
While Clay clearly is to blame for this, I think it’s also likely that it’s many things added together that just made everything worse
it’s really because in that episode, when his dad was about to hit Clay, he said that “You’re not even worth it.” That’s why he would search for ways to get struck because that makes him believe he is worthy. It’s also why he wants to get hit by other people too.

In the season three episode "Sacrifice", Clay goes on a drunken rant at Forgetty's and lashes out the other patrons in the hopes that they will hit him and thus make him feel a validated. However the other patrons, knowing that hitting Clay wasn't worth their time, just walk out of the bar and leave him as the drunken wreck that he is. This is the only episode where Clay seems to hit an a realization that his alcoholism and lack of emotional attachment to his family is causing his marriage to suffer because he's a monster; but he buries it and doubles down on his melodramatic ranting.
Exactly. I saw people say he was just wallowing in his shame and wanted to be hated. He just wanted to feel loved and noticed. His dad told him he wouldn’t strike him because he wasn’t worth the effort. I feel bad for Clay and Orel. Clay raised Orel similar to how he was raised. Hitting him to show him he loves him and denying his short comings. Clay wasn’t even an alcoholic before he met his wife. This show is really good. Really disappointed how the show was canceled.
Also with Orel’s teacher, she developed OCD from her violated experience. People don’t talk about that and in this situation that the reason she turned the lights off 3 times, and locking the slam lock 3 times, or just locking the locks 3 times is because she is subconsciously making sure, taking the steps to not be in that situation again. OCD has rituals and it’s called rituals because there is a reasoning behind it. Mental illnesses are not only born it’s also made from the horrid experiences we have in life. That story in Orel hit home and I hoped we could see more of her story especially about her conflicting feelings of the aftermath of that trauma.
OCD isn't a mental illness, it's a disorder.

Idk it seemed sexual to me. Especially the locking the slam lock over and over. Not only because of the r*pe but because of guilt from enjoying it.
Even the news articles made it seem like victims had a twisted response to being abused.
i Allways thought she repeting turning the lights, the locks was somekind of masturbation inuendo where she was flirting with the danger she once was in. Like, she should not finger herself for it since it was a traumatic event but she can´t stop herself and is constant mixed feelling around being safe and sound, and remenbering the night she was abused.
Moral Orel is probably one of the best depictions of overly religious fanaticism I've ever seen. Instead of being like every other adult cartoon that just goes "lol Christianity sucks/is lame" there's some actual nuance to it, focusing on how distraught and twisted people hide behind it to mask their own shortcomings while battering others. But at the same time there is some actual respect for those who are genuine about their relationship with God and are just simply misguided by the more corrupt people in their lives (i.e. Orel)

Thank you for putting my thought into words. And yes, Moral Orel didn't criticize Christianity, but rather the fanaticism of it.
Tbh, I've never liked shows that touch on the subject of religion because they (for the most part) end up just insulting religion and try to advocate for the extinction of it and its followers. It really feels as though the edgelords who made it go out of their way to point a finger and outright say, "I despise you and everything you stand for, and people like me are superior to you." Which I never liked as a Catholic who is happy to be Catholic.
However from what I see in Moral Orel this doesn't seem to be the case. And for that I do have to say it is definitely one of my absolute favorite shows that touches on religion. It offers criticism, however it does it in a way that feel more like an open and honest conversation where both people are calling out each other's flaws, not as a way to feel superior, but because they want the other to be a better person.
It really is an absolute shame this show wasn't allowed to continue. Having shows that offer nuanced portrayals of religion and the effect it can have on different people is something that is absolutely necessary. 👌
The episode where Orel falls in love , but then Christina and her parents had to move away, because they couldn’t get along with Orel’s parents because of an argument over the translation of how the Lord’s prayer in the Bible should be recited, really hit me in particular. Innocent love denied over something so trivial!

I haven’t seen the show, but from the sounds of the episode it could be a reflection how a lot of religion is the same but slightly different and that divides people. Religion really divides people in the most craziest ways
I personally have experienced similar disagreements with my family and the various churches we would attend. Honestly, its topics similar to this that remind me that it's just a cult

Because it’s being said by a character known to be sexually harassed and abused on a daily basis where she’s treated like an object or tool by every man in town created a fake husband who, in her damaged mind, truly loved her for more than her body just tried to touch her in the way every other man has leaving her feeling like no one truly loves her for who she is and isn’t safe from sexual harassment even in her own home or her own mind?

If it were to come out today (thanks to shows like Rick and Morty and Bojack horseman and f is for family) I have no doubt it would be a huge hit
I don’t know if it necessarily would be since there’s already tons dark animated shows similar to the show it would probably be just seen as riding off the success of all of the other shows and I feel like people wouldn’t give it a chance because of that

@@magdavillafuerte505 the thing about moral orel is that its not based on Catholicism, its based on a specific brand of hyper american white, patriarchal Christianity that a lot of fundies follow. its not meant to be realistic, yeah, but its meant to satire how a lot of people in america use Christianity to enforce toxic social norms. The two religions are distinct and have their own distinct history within America. But It's a commentary about how christianity is like in America, not Catholicism. I wouldn't be surprised if the specific denomination the people followed in Morel Orel were some kind of mormon offshoot considering how they act. But I haven't seen the show in full so I don't know if this is brought up.
I wouldn't, not in adult swim atleast. Rick and morty are given a free pass, because they intertwine funny with depressing often. And Bojack isn't on adult swim. But if they got the rights maybe we see it again on a streaming site one day.
Amazing show. Notably got kicked off adult swim for being too damn dark with “alone”. This is from a network that showed us a hyper-violent jail and a sauropod slowly burning to death. Orel is a grim masterpiece.

I did appreciate Stephanie and Reverend Putty’s relationship. She wanted to find her dad, she did and she didn’t really care if they had a relationship or not. She just wanted to let him know that she existed. But Reverend Putty didn’t push her away. And they ended up having one of my favorite relationships/moments in the show. That moment touched my heart.

One of the most akward, sad, yet entertaining shows I've ever watched. That camping episode was emotional to say the least lol
All of them really hit home for me. I watched the series on Adult Swim in college, after I left home and was deconverting from my faith as a Fundamentalist, Evangelical Christian. I was in tears a lot of time while watching (and laughing at other parts too).
I should really rewatch the series again…

To give insight on Nurse Bendy, it was heavily implied that she was sexually abused as a minor, hence why she age regresses into a childlike manner. The guy who abused her is now an elderly man who’s losing his mind and for a while watched over their kid Joe
I had a feeling they were trying to portray that! I use a lot of children’s media andsuch as a coping mechanism with my own trauma and mental illness, it's a cuper common way of coping since it creates that feeling of safety

That ending to the series is insanely beautiful despite how rushed it was. Orel ended the cycle, as did Shapey. They recognized the sins of their forefathers, learned from them, and did not repeat them. My parents did the same (to an extent) and I myself have learned from THEIR mistakes and am trying not to repeat them.
I do kind of wish MO returns in the future where him as an adult looks back at events that were supposed to be covered in the original run.

“According to Dino Stamatopoulos in the commentary for the series finale, there were seven finished episode scripts that Adult Swim chose not to produce due to their decision to cancel the series/roll back the number of season-three episodes from 20 to 13. It was suggested that Adult Swim might be willing to make a "Moral Orel special" in the future, but Stamatopolous stated that he declined the offer to move on to other projects, resulting in the creation of "Honor" as a series finale for the character.
Had the show not been cancelled and cut down to 13 episodes, its second half would have played out quite differently: Orel's paternal grandfather would have joined the cast, appearing in an episode that happens after the events of "Sacrifice" while Clay goes to retrieve the body of the bear Orel shot. Most of the season's latter half would focus on Orel's relationship with his dying grandfather, who would help further Orel's emotional growth into adulthood and help him reconcile his faith with life's realities. Other aborted plotlines would involve Clay's affair with Miss Censordoll and Bloberta's affair with Officer Papermouth, culminating in Orel's grandfather's death and Orel's transformation into a goth-type figure in the wake of the loss of the only good parental figure in his life.

Bloberta and Officer Papermouth becoming lovers, and Bloberta finally achieving happiness through her relationship with the divorced police officer.
A second episode involving Orel and Christina's relationship.
Reverend Putty becoming cold towards women after the events of "Sunday"/"Sacrifice", which results in him finally getting dates with Moralton women; Florence slims down and Reverend Putty becomes attracted to her and ultimately wins her heart.
Miss Sculptham's further attempts to find love, including a lesbian relationship and one with a prisoner, both of which end badly because Moralton society frowns on each relationship and refuses to let her marry either one (a denial that she compares to being raped). She also discovers that when she was raped she was pregnant with twins and her coathanger abortion only killed one of them.
An episode focusing on Shapey and Block: the two unruly boys bond, with the result that each becomes less hellion-like.”
i would have loved to see these happen, especially reverend and bloberta finally finding love. dino is an amazing writer and did a fantastic job with Moral Orel. only if adult swim didnt cancel it lol
SCULPTHAM ALWAYS GAVE ME LESBIAN VIBES
Man, I really wanted to see how Shapey and Blocky could've played out. Maybe they'd be able to find a family in one another?
I just finished watching it and found it to be really endearing with its use of stop motion as lot of shows haven't used it as a medium. I also liked the relationship between Orel and Christina (they're so sweet towards each other), definitely would have liked to see them develop more as a couple if the show hadn't been canceled. and see how they grow closer together as a result of shared experiences.
I would have loved to see how things would have played out if Adult Swim didn't cancel the show, I really would have liked to see the addition of Orel's grandpa as I think having him as a character within the show and seeing Orel's reaction to his illness and eventual passing would have been a good inclusion into the series. Another of the unused episodes that I am interested in would be to see the growth of Shapey and Block as throughout the series both of them are hellions (acting out, screaming etc.) but something must have happened to both of them to mature into the police officer and firefighter that we see in the future (maybe that's where the grandpa's terminal illness and passing come into play?)
All of these unused episodes have such potential that I could eventually see there being a reboot of Moral Orel in the future because as Steve said in the video that there is a potential for a KND reboot that's the result of fan campaigning on the internet. So this is my challenge to you the fans of Moral Orel, let's get a petition started and bring it to the attention of Adult Swim just how much of an impact Moral Orel had on adult animation and how much we miss it as a series. Another way to do this would be to reach out to Dino and the other producers and see if they would be interested in reviving Moral Orel outside of Adult Swim as an independent work.

exploring an assault survivor feeling guilt over gratification from her attack is very interesting, and not something I've seen covered in media often. its strange because its such a common thing for survivors to feel-- not just the guilt, but having a strange relationship develop with their attacker in their heads. it should be common knowledge given how (unfortunately) common assault is, but our bodies naturally react the same way whether its consensual or not.
I believe Tuca and Bertie also covered this topic in an episode.
I only saw it one other time. Oprah did a creepy, Groomer thing and said all victims enjoyed the sex during the assaults.

Yikes… To think that this show is like Bojack HorseMan yet never got the same attention.
I honestly think that cancelling this show this early is one of Adult Swim's weirdest decisions. Yeah, the final season was dark and disturbing, and the episode "Alone" truly can bring horrible memories to those who’ve experienced similar situations, but let’s face it: Unlike their worst shows, Mr. Pickles and King Star King, which were showing these subjects as a desperate attempt to shock, this one is treating this kind of stuff seriously as it should be and thus treating it with respect.
Bojack made the right decision by making characters animals as emotional barriers for basic viewers who tend to ignore the world around them

Steve's 100% spot on, not the right channel. At the time there wasn't a right platform for a show like that. Especially Adult Swim. They like their subversive humor, not all subversion.

Orals mom saying "that's just his true self coming out" when Clay is drunk is so damn haunting and true. As a recovering alcoholic, alcohol doesn't make you be what you arent. It lowers your inhibitions so you act how you truly are. Clay is truly just a bad person.
Morel Orel walked so Bojack Horseman could run. It’s an excellently crafted show. Although whenever I watch it I remember Assy McGee coming on right after

@Farflung Clown Is it okay for me to ask why? I'm a big fan of the show including its later seasons so I'm partially stuck in a sort of bubble that praises the whole show pretty equally.
I've seen some people who just kind of dislike it as a whole but if you don't mind I would actually like to hear a perspective from someone who thought it was getting good then failed later.
@Farflung Clown whole point of bojack is that you can't be shitting on people and expect to get away with it. that's the entire point of the unlikable A-hole character archetype. sure he's relatable in the sense that we're tired of seeing well rounded individuals; never supposed to look up to him as your hero or to model yourself as

I'd say it is the Opposite way round, Morel Orel ran. Tested the boundaries and Bojack stayed just within them. I personally love Bojack, it can be dark and gritty and although I've never personally seen Morel Orel I can already tell that this is far darker by the discussions that are being talked about in the Comment Section, all of which are in Bojack in someway. But, non are expanded upon. They always touch the light, they don't go into the darkness. The only time I've ever seen Bojack really get as bad as any of this is That's too much man! Times Arrow and the best of all, The View from Halfway down which should've been where they ended the series really. But, these are the darkest moments in Bojack most of which deal with different subject matter but non are as dark as some of what Morel Orals subject matter holds. This is most likely why it was cancelled, maybe. The people who worked on Bojack saw Morel Orel.
I remember hearing a rumor that, in a later possible season, Orel would become goth. And honestly, regardless if that was true or not, it made me realize that seeing the character progression of Orel in any possible later seasons would have been so interesting to see, and I'm just so dissapointed that this show was cancelled :(

@@12DAMDO I’ve also heard it but I don’t wanna assume it’s a headcanon because I read somewhere that he was supposed to turn goth after his grandfather died (which did happen.) It makes a lot of sense for me personally
But then would the show still be called Morel Orel? They could have done a continuation maybe titled "Goth Teen" coz it is about him becoming a goth.

The creator of the show said he was supposed to have a goth phase, but not “the Christian kind” he was supposed to rebel a little, but that phase would help him become more well-rounded and less dogmatic.
He would still come back to religion he’ll just take some of the more dogmatic teaching with a grain of salt, the ending where Orel grows happy was always going to be the same.
We just didn’t get to see his full journey which is a shame

I’ve never wanted a show to be continued more than Moral Orel. The creator had more to say and the show is one of the most brutal, cathartic and still hopeful looks at religion I’ve seen.
The show came about in a very, very weird time in US culture. The 2000s were a revival of scriptural fundamentalism. The gay marriage debate, Harry Potter burnt as promoting devil worship, Creationism added to school curricula, and the war with Islamic fundamentalism. It's not nearly as intense now as it was, and Moral Orel was a passionate critique of where we were at the time.
honestly i think with the way things are now this show could be released/continued in the current day and still be relevant.
@@averywebb3093 yeah, I think this show is becoming topical again. many of the shifts we are seeing today have movers behind them that really got started in politics during the 90s and 20s and have moved from minor roles to leadership ones.

It’s more relevant now than it was even then. There is too much crap going on in the Bible Belt and it’s high time the light was spotted on the subjects and themes this show was introducing.

Did Moral Orel go "Too far" for a comedy network? Yes, admittedly. "Alone" has nothing funny about it.
But is it a criminally underrated series that has some great dark comedy mixed with some truly poignant takes on tragedy, abuse and the insane hypocrisy of societal standards? Also yes.

Oh I'd rather THIS SHOW than family guy. It actually takes serious things with the seriousness they deserve and aren't all "hurr durr, Christianity is bad". I mean even that scene of how the Reverend talks about how the reason Orel's romance is better than his daughter's is because the woman her daughter was with didn't love her.
@@bananarama1425 Oh absolutely. One of Moral Orel's greatest strengths is that it rose about being a "Religion dumb" show. It's a parody that pokes fun at a lot of religious tropes (Like how ridiculously rigid to appearing "Good" the town is) to genuine problems of zealotry (Christina and Orel not being able to see each other over a slight difference in faith) and even the positives of religion. My favorite was when Orel practiced meditation and talked to "Buddha" and how just because you use a practice from a different faith, it doesn't diminish anything.
And, just to bring up Family Guy, again, when they did that whole Quagmire's sister episode, they still tried (And failed spectacularly) to make it funny since, Family Guy has long since lost any charm or humor and just relies on gross out gore and vulgarity.
In contrast, when Moral Orel did "Alone." They pulled no punches and gave no exit options for those topics. And the audience respected them for portraying such dark issues with respect.
Like I said, still understandable a comedy network wasn't cool with it, but if you're gonna do it, do it right and don't mangle it like Family Guy did for the domestic abuse episode.

What people ate failing to mention in these comments is AS pushed for Moral Orel to go further on touchy subjects in season 3 because (shocker) it's giving them attention. Then the creators listened and got bloody canned for it. It's like wasting talent is all the companies are good at.
It was most likely because the show began to lose its humor during Season 3. AS probably meant something like "Go further on touchy subjects, but try not to lose the humor". AS is a dark comedy channel, after all. So when one episode released that had no real funny moments, AS knew it was probably time to pull the plug.
The episode with the dog always makes me tear up. The dog was practically the second coming of Jesus in this show and was killed for spreading too much love, robbing Orel of the best thing to come into his life probably since his grandfather. I’m glad Orel ended up having a very similar dog when it flash forwards to his adult life in the finale.
There seems to be a Moral Orel resurgence happening over the past six months and not only has it led me to rewatching the entire show for the first time since high school, but it's also given me hope that a mini-series/reboot could happen now that the cultural landscape around animation is so different. Not sure what Starburns/Adsit are up to right now, but I'd love to see more of this iconic show. It truly was ahead of its time.
I found out about it I think a year ago cause they put it on HBO max and I also had a friend recommend it to me, what a great show, I’m so glad it exists and more people are discovering it these days

As a child who grew up in a broken family and has seen my mother abused, I cried so, so hard with the bears/spilt milk scene. Every memory and repressed feeling resurfaced and I just broke down into tears. Don't get me wrong though, I'm glad that I saw that scene. It was raw and horrific, but it was genuinely made to tell the truth of the damage that a broken family can do to someone as they desperately yearn for something that they unfortunately never had, and at that point, sadly never will at that damaged state of mind... I've BEEN there, fantasizing a family that didn't exist, friends that I could never have, all just to cope with the pain and loneliness deep inside of me. It's magical in the moment, but there are sobering flashes that it's all fake and that no love will ever be reciprocated back.
I remember watching this and thinking the girl from the tattoo and piercing parlour would be a better parent than his actual parents, at least she cared for his wellbeing

This show meant a lot to me when I first discovered it. I have never seen age regression handled correctly by media, and nurse Bendy's mannerisms when she experiences it is frighteningly relatable. I cried more than once while watching the second season, it got too real.
tbh as someone who has been assaulted by many men multiple times, this show is probably the only show I have seen that really SHOWS what the aftermath trauma of that can look like. I could really relate to the 2 women characters, because I know exactly how they are feeling. Those things are real, those emotions are real. this happens in real life. I have struggled for a long that one of my earlier assaults were pleasurable to me, and that I for a while after missed the man who did that to me even tho it was wrong and I still struggle with nightmares of it. or now that I am an adult of how I really don't care about saying no since I know that my no isn't taken seriously anyway (working throught it in therapy don't worry). it is really sad that adult swim seems to be fine with rape jokes but doesn't actually want to explore what those things actually does to you in real life.

I feel like the pleasure is never addressed in most media talking about this kind of assault. But from my experience i think the pleasure can be a big part of what makes it so hard to deal with.
I think if it was purely discomfort or pain i would have pushed him away and ran out right at the start.
But because it felt good AND wrong at the same time i feel like my brain just kind of broke and i froze. I couldnt move or talk. my arms and legs felt heavy like they were filled with lead.
It was the first time a man had touched me like that. I didnt want it to be him, i wanted to get away but it also felt good. I liked how it felt and i hated that i liked it.
In the movies no one talks about that. So the fact i felt pleasure made me feel even more confused and ashamed about it. For a while afterwards i was like "does feeling pleasure mean that i wanted it? Maybe it was my fault. Maybe i deserved it." I was too ashamed to talk to anyone about it till like 3 years later i started working through it with my therapist

I know that feeling too. 😕 it's confusing... I became hypersexual and kinda into CNC after what happened with me. Then started to stupidly hang out with guys who had alcohol and it always led to.. that..even tho a few times I didn't feel like it. I only hung out because I was lonely and naive thinking these guys wanted to innocently hang out but it changed into something else that I had no intention of doing.
The season 2 finale really hit close to home for me
My father was also a alcoholic and emotionally abusive, whenever me and my siblings would stay at his home, he would just sit and drink, not wanting to do anything. While he rarely yelled at me the fact he never payed attention to us hurt just as much. As I got older I realised like Oral that is wasn't the alcohol that was changing him, it was revealing his true colours. I later found out from my mother not only did he cheated on her, but he was physically abusive towards her
Eventually me and my siblings cut ties cause of hid refusal to spend time with us along with other things. The line "It's because you become a bad person when you drink!" Especially hits close to home and I still tear up watching the scene

That one episode where one of the characters was having those fake tea parties with her teddy, spills smn and goes to clean it, then the teddy bear falls onto her and it seems like she has those hard flashbacks and an entire meltdown over something that happened in her past, that really hit me.
It made me feel sick, and pretty much caused me to feel weird for days.
I really love how nurse bendy at least gets some closure and healing from her trauma through developing a relationship with her son. I wish we got to see more of those ladies find some form of healing. but im glad we got this at the very least

I’m pretty sure it’s canon that Nurse Bendy was molested by Dr Secondopinionson when she was twelve years old, resulting in her having a child named Joe. (They meet in S:3 E:6 titled “Dumb”, and it’s for sure my favorite episode) Very tragic how much Bendy has gone through but I’m glad the creators and writers displayed the affects of sexual abuse and trauma in such an accurate way. It’s a shame it got cancelled.

I think the Nurse Bendy thing has been debunked, she is canonically 32 (but acts much younger, similiar to Doughy's parents) so she had Joe at around 21.
But that doesn't rule out her being abused as a kid by perhaps someone else.. or even the same doctor then had a kid with him when she is an adult.

Moral Orel was meant as satire on "Davey and Goliath", the stop-motion animated series from the Lutheran Church. When Davey went high, Orel went WAY low.
Moral Oral reminds me of that point growing up when you see the flaws in your community and family. You realize that the world isn't Sesame Street, it's flawed and dirty and no one cares.

I especially love how the show actually has fantastic LGBT representation. Especially for a mid 2000s show. Coach is a bit of a stereotype for comedic effect but his character is taken extremely seriously in the last season and was heartbreaking. I only watched it recently, but I was so pleasantly surprised, it was great.
That's pretty lame to even mention. This show goes extremely in depth with alot of controversial problems, and all you can mention is how representative it was for certain types? Pathetic.

I don't get why we can't have darker stories. Honestly, I find shit like this immensely therapeutic. I have ptsd and dark humour a d stories have literally kept me alive all these years.
Im so glad this show is getting more and more attention recently, there's also a few unmade episode scripts and one episode on UA-cam made without the official puppets after the show's cancellation if you wanted more Moral Oral. And maybe Im just being optimistic but with the show getting more and more recognition as of lately I don't see a revival being too farfetched, especially since Adult Swim's approval on an ATHF movie, a Metalocalypes movie, and a Venture Brothers movie. Im sure if people show interest it can happen.

My favorite character in the ENTIRE show is Reverend Putty. And I'll tell you why. Reverend Putty is, for all his many, MANY faults...a decent man. But he lost his faith. He's cynical, bitter, and angry, and there's this happy little kid who keeps bothering him non-stop.
As the show goes on, however, he starts to actually LISTEN to this happy little kid. This kid - This one little booger who is something that Reverend Putty hasn't seen in a while. Orel is genuinely optimistic. And that's all you need, really.
In a cold, cruel, harsh world and in a cold, cruel, harsh town where everyone is poorly hiding their contempt for one another, Putty finds ONE Person who is saying "Y'know what? Everything is going to get better. I have faith." And that restores Putty's Faith. Not necessarily in God...maybe it's too late for him to genuinely believe anymore. But he believes in Orel. And that's enough to make him go from a cynical bastard, to a snarky bastard, to a good-hearted bastard...to not a bastard at all.

This for me is one of my all time favorite television shows - for me I didn't mind Season 1 being more formulaic because it made the darker moments all the more impactful, and season 3's finale for me is one of the most moving episodes of a show I've ever seen, knowing Orel turned out happy and thriving.
I had always thought, the last season got super dark *because* it was cancelled. That the creators decided to go full steam ahead because they had nothing left to lose. Glad to properly understand the circumstances, quite a shame it couldn't continue as it intended

It’s literally such a good show I will never not be upset about it getting canceled. It’s one of my boyfriend and is favorites. We always say the show can be summoned up in one quote “at least his hearts in the right place , poor kid “
Moral Orel was one of those adult swim shows that was at least a solid decade, bare MINIMUM, ahead of its time both from a comedic and plot standpoint. I remember coming across the show when I was 14 to 16 and still actively attending church, even back then I thought it was hilarious and brilliant.
I haven't seen the series in its entirety, but my favorite episode is season 1 episode 3 charity. I enjoyed how even though they were using addiction for laughs, they still took a slight serious angle at it.
However, it is interesting to find out that when they take a straight-up serious angle to a situation, that is when adult swim had too much. It almost makes me think differently of adult swim as a company.
I grew up in a community very similar to Orel's. Every time I watch this show, and look beyond the exaggerations I can clearly see a lot of my childhood church congregation and the behind-the-scenes stuff. No wonder they declared shows like this an "abomination from Satan's minions" when it aired (come to think of it how'd they know? Who was watching it? XD)
As a Christian, I think shows like this are important. Yeah people will use it as a dunk on Christianity, but that's not really the focus of the show. It shows the nuances of people's take on faith and how they use it as a crutch and/or for power. How being seeped in such a community can be detrimental if things go too far.
MO is raw, but in the right ways.
This show was imo genius in the way it's character development played out to reveal just how much they are all in their own pain and on their own at that for the most part, if it had gone on as long as it was originally planned I'm sure it would've been an even bigger cult classic than it is now
I personally always loved the ending of this show. It has a great way of showing that no matter how messed up your family is, you can always be better and do better than what you were raised with. Morel actually looks happy
That and it actually got an ending which back then and even today is sooooo rare
For all the obscure art you've exposed us to, I am so happy that the fans could give this to you. I've revisited this show over the years, and it's never disappointed. Alone was the hardest hitting cable cartoon episode I think I've ever seen. I agree with the feeling of extreme irony. Highlighting the "seen but not known" women of Morelton, and their traumas hits way too close to home for religious fundamentalists. Brilliant review.

I love to see the show finally getting talked about, criminally underrated and still so relevant today.
The actual exploration of the darkness that can stem from people misusing religion and not just "haha Flander's kids are weird", plus the oblivious well-meaning Orel is a fantastic change in protagonist from literally everything else. But I must admit that watching him slowly break down and become jaded or depressed and less giddy through the show was incredible to watch develop. I'm glad he breaks the cycle and becomes happier later, overcoming his trauma.
I genuinely believe that Moral Orel was ahead of it’s time. If it came out some time this year, I’m sure it would’ve had the full 7 seasons
I agree with the first season being very formulaic. When I first watched it (only a month ago ha ha) I thought it worked for the genre it was parodying since they too were really formulaic. That being said after about 5 episode I did feel it was bogging the show down.
It is a shame the show was cancelled but then again I did feel the show was almost taunting the network and public to cancel it by going darker and darker. I think up there till the final season they got away from it because all that dark content was done in a comedic way, once the humor was dropped the network freaked out. That says a lot about us as a people and the network. It’s almost a microcosm of the whole parody. People think it’s okay to teach kids horrible moral lessons wrapped up in a children’s show and it’s harmless. With the parody it’s okay to show these horrible situations because it’s wrapped up in a comedy. That with both when you pull back the palatable veneer it’s all about serious and disturbing content.
"Too controversial" yeah heaven forbid we actually talk about these things. Protip for adult swim: these things actually happen to people and should be talked about because no amount of putting your fingers in your ears and pretending they don't will make them stop happening and they should be brought into the light.
Fr tho, it's all fine and dandy when joking about these topics but the second a show takes them seriously and treats the issues with respect it's the can for it for being "too dark"

Playing devil’s advocate here, everyone keep in mind that Adult Swim _is_ a comedy network at the end of the day. Yes black comedy exists, yes you can have comedy while still having emotional beats, but there isn’t a single ounce of anything that warrants a laugh of any sort in episodes like “Alone”.
Does the show deserve to exist as an excellent art piece? Absolutely. Do I understand why Adult Swim specifically didn’t want to host it? Also absolutely.
How about you actually appreciate the fact that AS allowed it to fucking air in the first place? I'm steady hearing all of you complain about a comedy network prioritizing a comedic show over a depressing mess and the fact you genuinely are so lacking in any self-awareness that you don't see that the episode even airing as intended shouldn't have happened is beyond me.
If they ever revive Moral Orel, I think it could work by being set before the ending of Honor by showing what led up to Orel’s happy ending.

I believe she was meant to properly divorce Clay, moving in with Officer Papermouth, leaving Clay on his own.
It would have actually left Clay in a hell of his own making. His prime fear is losing his family (or at least losing them to someone else). So having all of that ripped from him would have been more satisfying then the "they stayed unhappily married forever, the end" we got. I'm honestly fine with them retconning the third season, if we get a redeveloped plot with everything that was meant to be added.
I Loved this show sooooo much! I was devastated when I found out I’d never see a new episode. I think now soooo many years later, with such a change in what is acceptable and todays world, it could easily come back with such good story lines. One of the best and most underrated shows ever created.
"Alone" might just be the darkest, most fucked-up episode of TV ever created. What a tragedy this show was cancelled and never got to end the way Dino wanted it to.

Ya Mr. Pickles was quite something. To be a fly on the wall when the fucking spin off got green lit. I mean theirs haveing no ideas and then theirs makeing a spin off of the show you already made the last time you had no ideas.
Moral Orel is unironically one of my favorite shows of all time. I watched the first season in high school and hated it. Thought it was a schlocky parody of Davie and Goliath.
I rewatched the series on my deployment because I ran out of other things to watch. I made it to the season 1 finale like you said and knew it was actually something special. I made it through season 2 and loved the series.
Then I hit season 3. Heartbreak after heartbreak. Episode 4 and Episode 9 are the ones that always hit the hardest and I love that you went so deep into them.
This was the first time I’ve ever come across your channel and I will definitely check more of your stuff out.
This show absolutely wrecked me back in the day. I think it helped me realize some things about my own childhood. Great review!

@@jazzyqueen4980 Honestly as much as people praise Bojack and Rick and Morty as some sort of innovation, to me it's not as amazing as Moral Orel because Moral Orel just feels like it wants us to understand that the characters can have issues but are still bad people. Bojack and Rick and Morty kinda want us to root for their characters I feel.
Never watched back in the day, just remembered the commercial for it. Started watching this and decided to go check it out, just binged it. Now I really wish they kept it going. Awesome show.
I remember this show as a child, I was far too young to understand anything though. I decided since I saw you post this to go re-watch it as an adult. I just finished and actually am BAWLING… what a show honestly 🤯
It’s a great takeaway (even if the ending was rushed due to cancellation) that Orel went through A LOT and yet still remains a good person. Not just him but in the end you can see a portrait of Shapey on Orel’s family wall of him as a police officer. I just loved the fact that it proves you can go through A LOT but still be that good person and break the cycle of abuse
I’d really like to see adult swim maybe doing some kind of big special thing with Moral Orel, like showing all the episodes as a marathon, just so more people happen to see it, plus it would definitely drum up support for another season/special.
I remember seeing isolated episodes of this show long ago and being mostly uninterested in it, but seeing this and how it does actually form a comprehensive story make me want to watch it

I'm glad to see Moral Orel's seen more appreciation this year, back when I originally found the show there were only a couple videos on UA-cam talking about it and now there's a ton. I just rewatched it again for the sixth time and can't stop thinking about it.

The episode Alone is one episode i had to force myself to watch. Nurse Bendy reliving her r*pe is probably the most realistic reaction to a trigger I've seen in television, let alone an animated show. I've HAD flashbacks like that and it's almost triggering how accurate it is. I wish this show was given a better chance
this show was sorely ahead of its time-- i'm really glad it's finally getting more attention lately. it's a rough watch, but one absolutely worth going through if you can handle the content. and it's all done in stop-motion, which is SERIOUSLY impressive considering how difficult of an art form that is

It’s wild to me how ok people like adult swim are with gorey and vile humor but add any depth to it especially if it involves issues that women face and you’ll have your show canceled. I refuse to watch brain dead garbage like robot chicken which is nothing but hollow shock value humor. Just edgy for edginess sake
Yeah it’s kinda weird how when serious subjects come off as jokes it’s fine but actually addressing them and showing what kind of pain and trauma can come from it is too much. Although I will say that adult swim should have just moved the show to a streaming service instead of cancelling it because I can understand their brand derived from crude humor so this is something not in their norm, it’s still something people can look at for meaning and inspiration.

I would've been interested to see how the series would go if it continued, I think it really does a Great job in exploring what happens when religion goes too far , And I'm Christian, as much as I love the teachings of God, there are people who take it too far in the real world, blind to the consequences of their actions, supporting a religion isn't a free pass to kill children or rape , I think the show could've lasted 5 seasons, but we'll never know
Yea you have to ignore some of the crazier teachings to not be a psycho. Like when it permits slavery, obviously that one was wrong lol.

It really does show how people can take truth and warp it to fit their terrible lifestyle. This show is insanely deep to me and well written. The first few minutes of this video made me watch the whole show and I have to say the last two episodes of season 2 and the whole season 3 are truly amazing. Perfectly darkly real.
I recently watched this show in it's entirety, It's one of those shows that make you feel depressed after watching the darker episodes, like Bojack Horseman. Also, The same guy who voices Baymax voices Clay, talk about range
And the voice for Orel is Carolyn Lawrence, who you may remember as Sandy (SpongeBob) and Cindy (Jimmy Neutron).
Yeah this is the show where they did questionable things with body fluids.

Truthfully after discovering and watching it, I do want it to return. It's a good change in adult animated shows and is "dont judge a book by its cover"
I rewatch this show every so often, i adore the messages and humor in this show. It really has a way of making someone not too depressed because there are times of humor to break it up- that is until after the season 2 ending. Everything is downhill up to that point
I only watched a few episodes of this with my father, we stopped watching in season one with the mesturbation episode as my dad was just too uncomfortable by it. The episodes you described were shocking, but in a good way. With the episode Alone, although very dark and I can understand the reason as to why it ended the show (especially given the debate on abortion) the teachers story seemed very real. Maybe its because I like the exploration of trauma within media,
Moral Orel has longtime been my favorite AS property and I watched it as it was premiering back int he day. Was lowkey obesssed with it and felt this gem deserved SO much more attention. Way back when it had a tiny but passionate fan-base. Now about a decade after its ending I'm seeing more and more people discover it on UA-cam and it really makes me happy to see people reviewing and theorizing about it. Oh, if only we had this back in the early 2010s..
Anyways, glad you enjoyed it. Sad the ending was so rushed but still as heart-wrenching as many of the other season finales. I'm a bit sad to see you not go over Sacrafice which is 2nd place in best episodes outside of Nature.. I put Alone in 3rd place just because Clay is my fav character in the show and Clay-centric episodes generally hit really well.
If you grew up watching Davy and Goliath as a kid you knew right away what they were pointing out.
