VKB5 is excellent.
I play double bass. I bought one, tried it and was immediately impressed. My left foot felt like I was lugging a weight forward while my right foot with VKB5 was immediate. I ordered a second one. Now I have a matching set. The action is so fluid, very satisfied.

Yea wood beater gives more definition & volume BUT it beats the hell out of the head & pad and will wear it thin before you know it. One night you'll be playing and the beater will go right thru the head in the middle of a song.

As a metal drummer, I love the wood beater. I like a lot of attack in my bass sound. It helps articulate the diff notes once you go past like 16ths at 170 or 180.

Kirill makes a good point though. It is VERY hard on your head. Definitely not a practice beater. EMADs arent cheap.

I have the spherical felt beater from this line, and I love it so much. I'm never going back to those hard plastic beaters!

It is a shame that bass drum sounds almost dead and flat. That's why you didn't heard too many differences between beaters. They are not subtle. You should test it on not muffled and higher tuned bass drum to get true character of each beater. I have all of them and they offer vast sound possibilities.
