  • So many of us who do creative work cringe at the idea of sharing our work because we hate "self-promoting." I get it and I hate it too! But thankfully there is a much better (much more fun!) way of thinking about sharing our work. That's good news because in order to grow, we need to find a way to comfortably and effectively share what we're doing with other people.

This was such an important message. Make it less about "MY" work and what is the value to the viewer/client/customer. Thanks for the reminder and insight.

If you have a problem selling directly. Sell indirectly, ask everyone if they know somebody who would be interested in buying your services. And when you get a contact explain that so and so said that you might be interested in buying this thing. What happens 50% of the time is that the people that you ask the first question, they are the one who buy.

Either way, I think it's helpful to evaluate your thoughts and mindset about what "selling" is. Is it is a sleazy way to get personal gain in some way? Or is it offering something valuable to the world that some would happily pay for?

@@videosbyjtm it's a way to convince someone that what you have to offer is more valuable then the money they will spend. 🙂

Community is key. Start small/support local and always be humble. But do realize no one is going to do the work for you. You need to put in the grind and be your biggest cheerleader 🙏💪📸

Great video man. This really hits at making work you want to create as well instead of thinking about what will be getting you the most views/likes/whatever. Gaining the trust of your audience is also something that makes the creative process and the payoff when someone else likes your stuff, and actively seeks out your opinion, all that much more fun as well.
Good job on this. Looking forward to what you continue to put out!

Theres an interesting difference between promoting yourself as the creator and promoting your creation. To take the creator's ego out of it, and push content based on the identity and worth of the content itself, to people who may connect with it, is okay? Yea? But I feel 'self-promotion' is often negatively labeled to auto-dismiss any share of original work. I certainly struggle with this in my creative pursuits.
On Reddit, for example, there exists a bevy of communities centered around really niche concepts. If I as a creator, find a community that clearly resonates with a work, and I put out my original content into these communities, leaving myself out, I am still more-often-than-not shunned for self-promotion. Mods delete the post and no one sees something that caters directly to the community they're a part of.. But if someone else (third-party) were to share the same content in these communities, would the reaction be the same? Think about that.!
I'm confused why consumers loathe people trying to share their hard work, and yet all-the-time knowingly interact with clickbait, pot-stirring, and creators who use media for their own ingratiation and for their own riches. Sure it would be noble to click "publish" and leave my work's fate solely up to the UA-cam algorithms... but what is so wrong with asking someone else to check out a piece of new/struggling content if they might enjoy it?
Posts like "get me to 5000 followers" or " I JUST RELEASED A NEW VIDEO, CLICK THE LINK ! CLICK THE LINK!," are NOT the same as "I made a piece about xxxxx and its relevant because yyyyy so if you're interested, please check it out..." but they all get tagged with this vile 'self-promotion' and effectively, I feel, it's almost helpless to take initiative in advertising your content on platforms that are already so heavily saturated.

Thank you for this thoughtful comment. I've read over it a few times and have been thinking about it for a few days. In this video, I think I was talking more about the internal struggle of promoting our work as creatives. In your first paragraph, you hit the nail on the head of what I was getting at in the video. We have to reach a point where we find value in the work itself and get a mental space of sharing that value.
I get what you're saying about sharing your content in online communities. Because we benefit from sharing our own work...I think it works best in communities like that to start by sharing value that gains you nothing but good will and trust. I think it's helpful to be wise about how you share and offer value in various settings. It's most helpful to "promote" the stuff we make to people who are ready for it.
I think of UA-cam as both a discovery platform and a holding tank (like a website). I think the algorithm could help me connect with new people...but I also want to add a bank of content to UA-cam SO THAT when people in various settings (like a Reddit Community) start to like and trust me...A.K.A. when THEY are ready for it...they'll find that I have bunch of helpful content there for them.
Online relationships are still relationships. There is a progression of trust. You've got to go on some dates before you ask a person to get married.
