Thanks for this, man. The US site has been sold out of the quick release adapters for a while and I wanted to finally switch my wheel out. It took some patience (and faith), but this worked :)
Hi everyone, I used two pens, one on each side of the fittings, holding them firmly with my hands and turning the thread. The thread base itself pushes the pens off and disconnects the Quick Release.
I used the tools to remove bicycle tires (2 plastic rods with flat head), using that to remove gives low pressure to the part but provides enough force to remove it.
To most people this may seem like a horrible design, But, you have millions of people already invested in the Thrustmaster wheels system. This is a compromise without people having to completely make their old wheel useless. I'm sure this took a lot of time/money and effort in designing this, and the fact that they include one in the wheelbase. They could have been like other manufacturers and just told you buy all new wheels and throw your old ones in the trash. Now, I know they in the business to make money, which is why they will have all new rims available. Yes, for the older wheels , it is a pain , but it good enough for me. Without having to spend even more money.
They had to include the adapter because Thrustmaster doesn't have a wheel that works with the new quick change adapter. They haven't even announced a new wheel at all. That adapter is inconvenient to me because I still plan to use my TGT after I pick up a T818 and it looks like a PITA to take that adapter off.
Have you noticed any flex in the wheel while driving, I was wondering because I saw in a some other videos about this base there was some play In between wheel and where the new adapter connects?
The sad thing is even when you buy the sf1000 t818 package they only include 1 qr adapter, so now im stuck with that wheel only to attach to the t818, and they dont sell the adapters in my country 😢, i hope they release the 32r wheel soon
I've owned all TM gear and the only wheel that was solid is the r383 rally. With all the creaking of plastic it's beyond me how anyone can defend this at the cost. TSS & th8a are solid enough bits of kit, the rest is all plastic toys including the T818.
What a nightmare. Got my t818 today and put adaptor on my SF1000 rim. Great. Tomorrow my Sparco rally mod will arrive. Great. But no Quick release to use it with. Not great. Do I wait for adaptors to come in stock or use your method? Any dents in wheel or adaptor after doing what you have shown us? Thanks. Bboy.
It's best to get another QR for the long run, as this is a friction fit. Doing this too many times, and I would expect it to lose that tightness and that will be felt in the wheel.
What happens if, you remove the scree on collar then reattach the wheel to the base with the locking collar, then gently wiggles g the steering wheel off this new adapter piece ?
Hi, I used two pens, one on each side of the fittings, holding them firmly with my hands and turning the thread. The thread base itself pushes the pens off and disconnects the Quick Release.
Could you not loosen the nut that holds the QR adapter to the wheel, but not remove it entirely? Then put the QR back in the wheelbase and then undo the nut until it pushes against the QR clamp, dislodging the wheel that way?
That was quite a cracker way to remove it if you want to use the adaptor on multiple TM wheels. Have you tried applying a thin coat of silicon grease maybe to ease off the friction created when tightening or locking in the big nut? May be it should help though not sure. What goes in should come out anyway. 😅 Planning to get the T818 soon as it becomes available in our region. I could say Im also “stucked” with the TM ecosystem at present.
Yes it is - You are supposed to keep it on. If you have some older wheel rims you are supposed to buy an adapter for all your older wheels if you get a new base.
@@Renovatio2 Exactly, I have 2 and a couple more on order. TM will only let you buy one at a time, and I want 6 in total, so until then, if i want to swap the adapter to another wheel, then this is the only option. The adapter fits very tight to the wheel (which is a good thing in this case) but it does mean its hard to remove by hand if you need too. Personally I have just used a large screwdriver to easy it out little by little, like in the video, but didn't need to resort to pliers.
@@michaelpayne7141 I'm wondering if in future it would be possible to 3d print the casing and buy just the board and pins. Might be a nice cheaper alternative so long as we could print the casings strong enough
Yes, they tested it. Which was why it took them so long to come out with this wheel. Plus, they are trying to consider the customers that built their brand. They could have been like other manufacturers and just told you buy all new wheels and throw your old ones in the trash.
If they did proper testing that adapter would fit better and wouldn't be such a pain. Plus I highly doubt my 3 wheels will handle the T818. Especially after seeing the sim racing garages review and the flex with the SF1000. They already flex and creek with my T-GT. Even after going through the wheel, making sure it was all good. It will probably be fine for those who use lower gain settings but not for me. I know I would still have to buy another wheel. My T-LCMs are wearing out after a year and a half, so I'll have to get new pedals anyway. I know I don't want another set of T-LCMs. For me personally, this base is a no buy. Sure a lot of people will be happy with it but it's not for me.
@@floodedcarb7028 Come on, be reasonable. Do you actually think that the engineers and the designers who work at the Thrustmaster didn't test this at all? Do you honestly believe that they just came up with this idea and decided to put it in The new direct drive wheelbase? Like I said this is a compromise. And with compromise it's never the best. The only thing they could have done differently was to have you remove the plastic fitting on your old wheel rims. Then come up with an additional new metal or carbon fiber woven piece. To replace on your old rim. Which you would have to buy separately. Then instead of the plastic adapter use all metal. Can you imagine how much that would have cost. Not only the fact that you could possibly destroy your old wheel by taking it apart. Remember they are trying to make money. It is a business , and they wouldn't exist if they didn't make money. Look I understand your frustration. I spent about two to 2-3k on thrustmaster stuff before I moved to fanatec. And believe me it's just a different level of frustration with them as well.
@derodge Are you able to actually read? Did I once say they don't actually do any testing? NO! I don't like their design choices, I am not getting this base. I am selling my thrustmaster gear. Nothing you say will change this.
@@floodedcarb7028Are you able to read? I never said you did. I asked you a question? Then, I said they spent many hours of time, effort and money to come up with this design. Also, I interest in what you do with your equipment or what you buy. I'm just telling you , making comments about how much they tested it doesn't make any sense if you have not had any conversations with the people who actually made these products.

Return the T818 while you still can. I just had to send mine back after two days of use.

Not a good idea, and more likely to break it.
Hello i know that they would have really tested these things but was plastic really the right way to go?

You really want to buy an adapter for each wheel you have. Then it takes 5 seconds to switch a wheel.
I can order a second adapter then have it delivered and installed quicker
it's not a quick release when you are removing it like this.
Yes it is - You are supposed to keep it on. If you have some older wheel rims you are supposed to buy an adapter for all your older wheels if you get a new base.
so they're extremely tedious to remove, yet Thrustmaster doesn't seem too keen on manufacturing enough of these to keep them in stock
Why would you want to remove this for?
You could be selling the rim or you only have one of the adapters (TM only supply one in the box with the T818) and you want to swap it to other rims.

@Renovatio I don't expect Thrustmaster will do that, probably not in their interests to do so.
Thrustmaster, do you really understand what Quick Release means?
Yes they do. You need an adapter for each wheel you have, then you can quickly switch wheels in seconds. The adapter is not meant to be removed.
Thrustmaster toy
yeah, then go spend $5000k + on a non-toy. No matter how much you spend , it's still a toy unless you buy a real car.
