This guy made more films than Keaton and Chaplin put together. His simple props 'a pair of glasses and a smile' had the effect of a timeless 'Everyman'.
+tomflynn 1974 Keaton didn't perform all of his stunts either, college and spite marriage, and he used a dummy for at least in two sequences from the classic chase finale in seven chances.
Proof that Harold Lloyd was a genius? We're spellbound almost 100 years later. In an interview, he said he had amazing people helping him put this stuff together. It was a team thing and they all knew how to play each other's strengths. He was not shy about sharing credit either. I'm betting in another 100 years he'll still captivate an audience.
1:20 the funniest damn thing I've seen in a lonnnnnng time. Can't beat classic comedy. I love that the main characters of Dumb and Dumber, "Harry" and "Loyd", were named after this guy.
So very well clipped together. The dancing scene at 2:20 works great with the music, makes my daughter giggle. You're a pro, just like Harold Lloyd. Thank you.
No person can *ever* be as good as The One The Only , The Irreplaceable .. There is *No Substitute for.... . .just my humble opinion.. The Best Silent film star.. and Most talented Motion Picture Star , Ever .. *Mr*. *Harold* *Lloyd*...◇♡♧ ~ !
A lot of the comments are on the dance moves at 2:20. One of the documentary films on HL has an interview made back in the 80's with a friend of his first love interest. A very old woman at the time she was interviewed. She said Harold and Bebe Daniels his first on and off screen love went dancing at dance contests and he was a great dancer in real life. One of his many physical skills. At his huge estate he also had a 4 wall handball court and an Olympic size pool so he was in good shape until middle age.
what impresses me about silent film stars like lloyd, keaton and chaplin - the stunts they did (especially keaton and lloyd) on their own. no way actors would do it today - not without ending up in betty ford because they would have to self medicate because they would use the stunts they did as an excuse. i've been a chaplin fan for years, but i'm just now discovering lloyd and i'm falling in love with him too. i was definitely born too late.
@tomflynn1974 Buster also used a stuntman in the long shots as did harold but that takes nothing away from these talented guys , acrobats, athletes and stuntmen that they definitely were in their own right.
Harold did a lot of his jumps off things, pratfalls, fight scenes, and he did hang off that famous clock hand with only one complete hand. Yes it was a 15 foot high prop wall but on top of a 10 story tall building roof and near to the roof parapet edge. Not safe by today's movie standards at all. But a century ago they actually had to do the effect as there were no green screens or CGI.
@@jackmorrison7379 I totally agree Harold was a stunt coordinator like Vic Armstrong today. He had a team working with him among them were Limpy Bill Strother as well as Harvey Parry.Instead of people rattling on about trick shots and illusions they should try doing what these guys did themselves!!! Buster broke his neck on one of his stunts and Harold pulled his shoulder during the clock scene.
Harold Lloyd was the funniest of the three great silent movie stars but in fairness to Chaplin he was far far more than a knock about comedian he could make you cry.
Great comment. I'd argue later on Chaplin's career his films were more about pathos and message, while Harold stuck with boy next door does wonderful stunts and wins the girl
@@jmason2838 enjoyed your comment, a lot I didn’t know about the great man. If only we had three greats like Lloyd Keaton and chaplain now. Never mind we still have their great film archive 😁
I can't stop watching either & he also lost a thumb & index finger on his right hand in a bomb prop accident in 1919 & still performed all his stunts in films after that w/ that disability wearing a prosthetic glove...Amazing.
@julian2011julian So glad the kids enjoyed it! People need to be made aware of Lloyd and his contemporaries talent, especially now that their films seem to be so rarely shown on TV. Thanks for spreading the word!
Lloyd, Chaplin and Keaton were immortal to this date. I don’t see any reason why arguing who was better. However, people seem to forget something: while for all of us Chaplin can only be related to The Tramp, his biggest talent was behind cameras. Chaplin is one of the best movie directors of all time.
Thanks for pulling this together. I remember staying up late on Saturdays to watch this on PBS with my dad. We were in stitches. Tremendous. Good pairing with the Moby track. Would be great to connect with the editor if you are out there.
Thanks for this. Love Harold Lloyd... Used to read/buy anything to do with him when I was a teenager. Not really the coolest guy ever in the eighties. Harold Lloyd and Jimi Hendrix! Ha!
In the clock scene he is only a short distance above the roof of another building. The camera has been placed at an angle which shows a street behind but misses the building next door. Giving the illusion he high up. Although in some scenes he is doing very dangerous things.
@Scoobybobble oh yeah I totally agree! In fact, he is my favorite movie star.. his action films are way better than anything Hollywood can ever conjure up..( That's just my opinion)
I'm 11 and live in England my mum showed me harold lloyd a lot.of people I know really don't like him but I make edits and skits and stuff with clips and drawings of him also he is my idol🥰😌

Perfect music! Combines old-school sensibilities with a modern vibe. I love Harold Lloyd! Funniest silent comedian!
I used to watch Harold Lloyd as a kid with my dad. 6 o clock on BBC2. Used to love it and such great memories.

The genius of Harold Lloyd. My personal favourite comedian from the early days of film.
For the last 5+ years, I've shown this video to my class when we get to The Roaring Twenties, as an example of silent film. They always enjoy it!
That is really gratifying to know! I’m glad Harold Lloyd still continues to entertain to this day. 😀
these scenes have made me laugh more than some movies today,
I would have loved to live at that time... 💖
Fantastic tribute to the talents to Harold Lloyd. 5✰

Happy birthday, Harold! You are 127 years old today! Love you always!
Brilliant! Wish his films were shown on TV again- thanks. A great montage, and nicely mixed with the music!
Hooray For Harold Lloyd
In a beautiful time, in an age before social media turned people nasty. 😐
Much better than any other silent comedian, Chaplin included. Lloyd is the most underrated genius of that time.
2:20 to me shows Harold was a goof ball at heart lmao He was prolly fun as hell to be around 😂 💀 🤣

.. Hi there. all here is just my humble opinion.....so did Harold in 'The Kid Brother' 💏 ..at least two emotional scenes with Jobyna Ralston,🙏🕯️🌹💐... actually quite a few heart - tugging scenes in this film. .the torture he goes through to film this classic.😞just horrific... very tough to watch..🙁😔 even tougher for him to go through😭.. poor man .😩😭. no stunt double there . 😭and all w/ thumb and forefinger of the right hand missing too.. damn.. . and when Harold says to Jobyna🙏🕯️🌹😍☝️🌟💐🏆..🙁.. that he doesn't feel loved by his family😩😭😭..or worthy of even living .. he starts to cry to her🙁😞😣😢😭💦💦💦 .. to see him like that ***seriously***rips one's heart out 💔😔😩😭😭😭😭😭😭😭and the fight almost to the death towards the end.💪 .its a heroic role.💪🤳..not really a comedy .. this was a great dramatic role for him .🏆.Harold Lloyd could have even ditched comedy and been an Oscar© - winning dramatic actor..🏆. for his superb acting abilities.. and not just for a 'courtesy' Oscar© for 'Lifetime Achievement' and being a 'Good Citizen'' although he certainly deserved it .. but he deserved much more ... Always in
a romantic lead role.. He could have been even more terrific doing more dramatic roles.. too bad the industry shut him and wife Mildred Davis👸🙏🕯️💘💐🌹🌟 out of movies .. after he filmed ''The Sin Of Harold Diddlebock' . it was not a big hit then .but now is a bit of a cult classic. Big stars make the occasional film dud .. then they come back to big success in films again .Harold and Mildred could have done that too. If they had only given them another chance..but. studios cruelly 😠 decided to exclude them from further film success .. I think for political reasons..after FDR , Democrats rules the entertainment / film industry.. Harold and Mildred were Republicans.. ...an obvious unfair bias against them both.. maybe some jealousy / envy there too..He was the highest paid and highest cash earner for his films of the entire decade of the 1920s.. surpassing all .. even Chaplin and Keaton.. Lloyd made his first studio film in 1913.. working with Thomas Edison 's studios..🎞️🎥 neither Chaplin or Keaton could make that claim.🤨🤔. Quite an accomplishment in itself.😏.. 🙁. Harold Lloyd should have been at least nominated for an Oscar for this role.. Jobnya Ralston too..🙏🕯️🌹😍☝️💐🌟👸..😍😘💘 😭.. a mature , adult romantic film - noir melodrama.. .with a happy ending..❤️💏❤️💘🌹🌹🌹😃😁🤗.. I was 12 yrs.old when he passed on .😭😞. .so wish I had known about him in my early years as a child .😍. I would have tried to find an address to write to him before he died😭.. 💌💟💘.. it greatly saddens me ***forever*** that I did not..💡..🌟💐..💔..💙 😞😭❤️💦💦💦💦

Some of these stunts look incredibly dangerous!
Unbelievably cool. Thank you thank you thank you. I've watched this many times and sure like it. Agreed on the music, too.

Here are the lyrics:
Lord God Almighty let me tell the news
My head got wet in midnight dew
Great God I been down on my bended knees
Talking to a man from Galilee
Michael spoke and he sound so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of angels' feet
He put one hand upon my head
Great God Almighty let me tell you what he said
"Go tell that lonesome liar
Go tell that midnight rider
Tell the gamblin', ramblin' backslider
Tell them God Almighty gonna cut 'em down"
You might run on for a long time
Run on, ducking and dodging
Run on, children, for a long time
Let me tell you God Almighty gonna cut you down
You might throw your rock, hide your head
Work in the dark with your fellow men
Sure as God made you rich and poor
You're gonna reap just what you sow
You might run on for a long time
Run on, ducking and dodging
Run on, children, for a long time
Let me tell you God Almighty gonna cut you down
You might run on for a long time
Run on, ducking and dodging
Run on, children, for a long time
Let me tell you God Almighty gonna cut you down
Some people go to church just to signify
Trying to make a date with the neighbor's wife
Brother let me tell you just as sure as you're born
You better leave that woman alone
Go tell that lonesome liar
Go tell that midnight rider
Tell the gamblin', ramblin' backslider
Tell them God Almighty gonna cut 'em down
You might run on for a long time
Run on, ducking and dodging
Run on, children, for a long time
Let me tell you God Almighty gonna cut you down.
