no matter how much i look at it i still can’t wrap my head around stone carving-the ability to turn a stone into a piece of art is and forever will be amazing; i have nothing but respect for artists
Unbelievable! I read a long time ago that the sculptors whose names we admire never actually cut marble and only created the image leaving the hard work to stonecutters, but I never saw them at work. Fantastic! Copying a marble masterpiece using just basic tools is beyond belief! Great artistry! Thank you for the skilled artisans and to whoever ordered this copy. Good job, sheikh!
I agree 100%. I stopped and had to rewind to see what the clay was for. Couldn't freaking believe it. Travesty. Not watching the rest of it. Bad taste in my mouth.
Arιa a Your comment just shows how intolerant you are. And proves that no matter how much talent a person has, there will always be someone who will find insult in his work. If you are so insulted, just order yourself a true copy and pay for these people's skills from your own pocket.
Often apprentices will rough out the piece and the master will do the finishing. The more famous you become the more apprentices you'll get. A lot of great work is done by unknown artists.
Michael Hogan Giuliano Finelli, from Bernini's workshop, is thought ( not all the experts agree) to have done a lot of the bark and leaves and flowing hair on Daphne.
egparis18 Well done for the research work. If you look up a certain Grinling Gibbons (actually of Flemish descent), a breathtaking woodcarver in England in the late 17th century, you’ll learn that he had a workshop in London- that tragically burned down- with over 400 carvers under his command. You need only take it a step further to understand his prolific output. However, in the finer details you can always feel the Master’s touch. Another interesting case is that of Rodin, and his “apprentice”/mistress, Camille Claudel. She surpassed him (which he was fully aware of) but never really got her due. She died tragically, and was totally neglected by her brother- a very famous French author. History resounds with a deafening roar of silence around hidden talents. One could go on forever over injustices. I believe you’re a cultured gentleman; it’s a pleasure to come across finer people. Best regards.
Wonderful Video. It is very delightful to see an art in creation. Creating process of an art is nothing but a type of meditation. There is no space for any mistake. This is why everybody has a great respect for artist of any kind.
They just built a circular wooden frame around it, and rolled it around like a giant wheel. Most of the journey was usually done by boat as well... They also knew about cranes and pulley systems. They weren't as backward as we might think.
@@meadmaker4525 The customer is likely a gulf-state hotel. They want to look like sophisticated Europeans, but unfortunately they're filled with people who would vandalise a nude "haram" statue.
Watching this modern butchery of stone, makes one realize what unbelievble hardships the old masters had to go thru to deliver masterpieces as we know them
In the past a successful Master would have plenty of young apprentices to populate his work shop. Happy to learn, eager to help and do the removal of excess rock before things get more serious. Today these young people seem to spend much time playing on their smartphones and power tools replaced them. Also modern social protection laws make it much more difficult to have many of such helpers in Europe.
horrendous kitsch, yes. the face is just unbelievably bad. modern realistic sculptures make faces completely differently from classical renaissance/old masters art, and forget about ancient greek classical, no comparison. i wonder how many pple see the difference though.
I can think of nothing more fascinating than watching a master at work. It doesn't matter if it's cooking, sculpting or a musical instrument...it's enthralling. Having said that, covering a semi nude statue to match puritanical ideals is ridiculous.
Esto es un trabajo deleznable. Además de rebajar la calidad artística del original en los detalles (como los rostros), el hecho de "vestir" a la figura de Dafne me parece un acto de censura inconcebible.
Nothing but awe struck at such a skillful craftsman. I think comments on dust or criticism of not copying the bare breasts of original are designed to veil perhaps envy of the man's ability shown here. Accept it for what it is... amazing skills! Must admit I am envious too😉
This music is better than most. At least theirs no narration fighting to be heard. I tune it down. I always wondered how Michelangelo got it so smooth. It’s a beautiful piece of art.
massive respect for this guy, what he did(even with power tools) single handedly, bernini had made this statue with the help of 150 of his apprentices.
Hello... Here is what came to my mind while looking at this most interesting presentation... : I once had to scroll back at the beginning of the film because I suddenly noticed that somebody had covered up the breasts of that woman statue model. So this was quite confusing.. because it took me a couple seconds to check at the previous sequence if that statue was actually originally naked and finished as such or if I missed a part where this body was in the making with the cloth as missing part of the original design. But No.. this rug really was plastered over a beautiful finished chest and this very much upset me. Not because I will not like statues with dresses but because I imagined the kind of client with his stash of big money walking into a gallery and choosing the beautiful artwork of this naked couple which represents a part and level of a high civilisation with the objection to the bare breasts to be covered up by a rug. Why not to cover up her head too with a Burka since there will maybe another millionaire having a wish to stick such a statue in his Hotel lobby, or what? Seriously I would refuse such degradation. Shall he train his own fellows in his rich country to make art at his taste and we will have something to laugh about. Anyhow.. this was the only upsetting part of this otherwise very interesting and beautiful film. I also thought.. This film is in fact a monument made for this older man working so well and hard to make this sculpture. He could be retired at his age.. but he still continues to work because he is passionate. He must have started very young as an apprentice and I tried to imagine how he learned many years ago his craft. With teachers of the "old school" probably. Thought about the actor Gerd Froebe, too. (Goldfinger in James Bond). So.. indeed I spent more time looking at this admirable man swinging his XXL side grinder tool without any particular dust or hearing protection (must be that some old school craftsmen just discard these hindrances to their all around 3D perception) than admiring the marble statue with the annoying rug. At the end.. I applauded "the old fat guy" whom I really admire and respect but to tell you the truth I barely remember the faces of these statues.. when I write this comment. Thank you very much for the upload.
Awesome newspaper hat.
yes and no protection whatsoever just fucking awesome
And the guy will outlive most health freaks.

Where did you read that and how credible was the author?
Just basic tools? I don't know if you watched the video but they used all modern pneumatic power tools.
As much as I admire this man's talent in recreating the statue, censoring a Bernini statue is just insulting
your feelings mean nothing, to him or me or anyone else. Just letting you know
Ice Carpenter your opinion doesn't matter to anyone either...just letting you know
I agree 100%. I stopped and had to rewind to see what the clay was for. Couldn't freaking believe it. Travesty. Not watching the rest of it. Bad taste in my mouth.
Do you realy think its only him? The individual mind is just one of a huge amount of people.

From now on i will never be able to see the David without imagining michelangelo wearing a newspaper hat while sculpting it.
Daily Male

LOL
Michelangelo wore a marble hat that looked like paper, it's true, I saw a broken one in the Louve. maybe
Can you imagine how the did it in Michelangelo's time? With no power tools? crazy.
And no newspaper hats! I mean can you imagine the hardship!?

This just makes old sculptures even more incredible
This video cannot be real. The time, skill, and the cost is incredible. In 2020, it is amazing to watch.
Wow! This is what you call a true master at work!
I am in awe of their talent. I wish I could also make one of those newspaper hats
I've always loved sculptures. It was great to see a beautiful majestic marble one being made💗
It bothers me that he's not wearing a dust mask or respirator
Yeah he'll never get to old age working like that. Oh, wait.
some lungs just arent stopped so easily
hamilton harper In fact it is 28 years old, it looks like this because of the damage caused by breathing marble dust
mrbr, marble particles are heavy and quite big. He'll be fine. He's also using one heck of a dust extractor.
Maybe he'll die of his sins.....
I love the crucifix on the wall - beautiful work
I was distracted from the amazing artistry by the man’s fashionable newspaper hat
Seems like the most challenging art form. The subtractive process leaves no room for error. Patience and confidence are essential.
i just love his hat, old school is the best,in life, and so REAL he is
Good video 📹
Wow! This is incredible. Just wow

imagine what a pain it was for them to move a giant rock like that back in the Renaissance
I don't think so, they were using an other way i think, it's impossible to move it without machines.
there were their techniques.
Eric Vargas not too hard, they had many slaves. :/
They just built a circular wooden frame around it, and rolled it around like a giant wheel. Most of the journey was usually done by boat as well...

This wasn't from the Renaissance. Bernini was a Baroque sculptor, from the period immediately following the High Renaissance.
they did alot of things in sections as well
patience and perseverance and lots of technical skill. a joy to watch.
Amazing work. I can't imagine being that skilled. But why the need to censor the original when copying?
Per request of the customer who commissioned the piece, I suspect. An ignorant prude with more money than sense.

why not ?

Complimenti vivissimi maestro.....opera magnifica!
We are here for a VERY LIMITED TIME! Work the stone every day like it's your last, yet knowing you will create forever...❤
The music sounds very close to the Star Wars theme. The carving is amazing .
I was looking this comment!! I thought it was just my imagination
I admire this mans hard work and live his newspaper hat
Ohhhh my God! I wish to live in this workshop forever. This is amazing life
Astonishing work !

Excellent Work Sir You are a great
I appreciate how hard this must be to do, but the censorship and the final result just feel kitsch compared to the piece Bernini produced...

thumbs up for the epic hat alone... the talent is gravy
Is this music a rearrangement of Duel of the Fates?
jlg395 literally just thinking the same thing, thought he was gonna start carving Jedi next.
Most likely, they used Duel of Fates as temp music and then asked someone to compose something similar to dodge licensing costs.
@Darth Murika Which piece is that?
Wow !!! Wonderful !!!
God is first born in to the world through the eyes of an artist.
Many thanks oh my God !!!!
Gran trabajo Maestro!
The hat cracks me up. Nice work!
Beautiful work, and what a studio! Still, I worry about his hearing, his lungs, his wrist bones...but not too much, since he's not worried himself.
thats crazy how you care less cuz he doesnt care
Yes, perhaps.
The newspaper hat protects him.
