  • Whilst surfing back home in South Oz i had what we suspected was a Great White Shark breach in front of me out in the ocean. Obviously I decided to pack it in this session and head somewhere else :\
These things happen and I'm so grateful that the ocean is so alive and abundant down here.

We had the first fatal white shark attach ever here in Maine a few years ago and it certainly occupies space in my mind each time I'm in the water, especially alone. Perhaps it's a good reminder that humans aren't" always the apex predator in every situation and to be humble and respectful of our ocean environments and the big fish that call those places home. Cheers Kale

I remember hearing about that, all my years surfing Maine sharks never crossed my mind with how cold the water is. However things are changing in our waters. NY just had their sharkiest summer yet and I fear with how warm the waters getting we might see a similar future on our coast

Surfing a bit south of Santa Barbara, CA a few years ago and the guy I was surfing near said holy f@ck! I turned around and saw a juvenile great white come up to the surface about 7 feet from me. Probably only about 4-5ft long but it was an unforgettable experience. Caught the next wave in, felt exhilarated and weirdly excited. Told my pregnant wife with excitement and her mouth dropped 🤣

What a day you had! This video hit very deep for me and it can be real tough to watch these sort of videos but you did an amazing job talking on the topic of sharks.
A bit over year ago I tragically lost my uncle in a shark attack in Tuncurry NSW. As rare as these attacks can be, they do still happen and I believe every surfer does need to have it in the back of their mind and be respectful of their home. Sharks are beautiful creatures, but we need to take them seriously. The question of being scared vs being exhilarated from an experience like that is hard and I get that.
Surfers need to value the risk of having a good wave or session over possible shark infested waters. Which I get can be hard when there’s barrels.
However, in my opinion i really do think it’s getting worse as well. Not from surfers, but the fact that there are more and more shark encounters than there has been in a long time. From what I know it’s being caused by global warming making the sharks come to warmer waters to feed. *correct me if I’m wrong*
The point is that us surfers need to be more aware of these beautiful creatures and be more mindful of the potential dangers that these situations can lead to.
My big tip is to use the App ‘Dorsal’ which shows you shark spottings in the area, anywhere from a day ago all the way to the last month so we can see the risk before we step foot in certain waters.
I think it would be smart for someone like you to promote an app like this. Other than that, this video was very well said and some epic waves there at the end mate.

I'm from deep south SA, we allegedly had a fatal shark attack at one of our main surf spots and that definitely cleared the lineup for while, but luckily conicided with a bout of onshores, so by the time it swung offshore again I think most had forgotten their fears and gotten back out there. We do have juvenile great whites around here sometimes and there were a few attacks during the summers of 2017 and 2018. There are a lot of fish on the reefs around here. There is a regular seal that feeds in the same spot always…right where the left will connect on the inside.

On my 28th birthday, I had a 5ft shark swim right underneath me in the lineup 😍 I think sharks are really beautiful but I definitely want to keep a respectful distance from them generally. A lot of people get bitten down here and don’t even report it because it is that common. But with little sharks it’s just little bites. One day at Stanwell Park a few years ago with just 2 of us out, a great white breached like that. It probably would have been the size of a juvenile around 3m, fortunately it was at least 300m out to sea. It was a small day and we were riding a shore break which was running down the beach along the shoreline so we just kept surfing. Probably only 25m from shore and shallow enough to run if you had to. Lot's of fish that day and earlier when I was alone I'd already encountered a small bronze whaler getting a little too close for comfort and got out for a bit until the bait ball it was chasing dispersed. I am surprised the dolphins let you get that close, I tried once and 2 rather large dolphins either side of me, "escorted" me out of the area! Although they did have a large number of young calves.

Noice Kale I just moved to Florida been surfing New Smyrna Beach here shark bite, capital they call it here lol and I knew I’d eventually have encounters now living here a few months no great whites but I’ve had one swim up to my nose and I’ve duck dived right under one riding the wave from behind looked it right in the face luckily those were just small but did see big boys out the back before 🦈

Man I’ve had soo many shark encounters. Growing up in South Africa we usually keep surfing if you can see them swimming another direction or give it a hour or so and go back out. Craziest had was in Western Australia over 5m great white came between all of us and attacked and killed my mate in the water. That kept me out the water for a few years and took many more to get confidence up again. Weirdest thing even the most pumping waves you just had no feel or Stoke to even go out for a paddle. Had a few break downs in the surf from bubbles off the reef, seaweed etc that shook me up

I was at barbwires at trestles, last 3 people out for the night, sun was long past set but still some twilight, when I got bumped really hard from underneath. I immediately started paddling in and my buddy on shore said he instantly knew why. I have watched a seal hit my board, I have had fish land on my board after a duck dive, this felt huge and triangular, I asked an expert about it and I’m pretty sure it was a Juvenile great white. We get a lot during summer. I was also in the water at San O when a girl got bit at churches. Taking my xgf surfing for her first time and reassured her that you never encounter sharks, then the lifeguard calls everyone out of the water lol.

Surfing alone, sunrise, south of Jacksonville Beach pier, 2-3 ft break, shrimp boat headed in throwing the trashed catch overboard, catch wave, turn around to head back out, approx.18" fin coming at me about 10 yrds. away, waves come in blocking vue of fin, flip around & paddle like hell to beach & could not stand, my legs shaking so bad. Lessons learned: no sunrise sure, especially alone. Get out of the fracking water when shrimp boats pass close to the break! From now landlocked used to be surfer. Where's that wavepool!!! dTurner

Where I'm at in Oregon we have mostly great whites. And my buddy and I carried in a local kid who got bitten on the leg about a year ago. I got some gnarly photos of it and the kid made a full recovery and surfs the spot all the time. It's just the reality we live doing what we love. Ive surfed for 30yrs and was a rescue swimmer/ocean lifeguard for 5yrs and have seen a few bites and a few sharks in my time but I always keep in mind it's their house and I'm just visiting, so be a good guest.

If you want you could get a shark shield 🛡 I've heard a-lot of surfers in reunion island use it because of the high number of shark attacks/encounters they’ve had there in the past. But like you said that’s part of being out in there home, I personally have seen a few big tiger sharks and reef sharks out in hawaii. The tiger sharks usually are what usually trips me out the most because the ones I've seen were quite thick and definitely reminds you how small you are compared to them. I agree that the love for surfing and overall being in the ocean outweighs the fear of sharks, the ocean truly is medicine for the soul. Glad your ok man, god bless!!

Had back to back run ins with juvenile white sharks in San Diego. First time was when a young GW swam right under my buddies feet and then came up to the surface a couple meters south of us. I thought he kidding until I saw it pop up. A day or two later at the same spot, another juvenile broke the surface of the water about maybe 3-5 feet away from my side. My buddies face was pure panic when he witnessed it breach right next to me. Both times left me scared, but I never got the sense that these sharks were really interested in nibbling on us. My buddies and I stayed and surfed until we were content.
