  • This was the first trip out with the aim to make contacts via the geostationary Q0-100 satellite while out portable. I arrived, set up and then forgot a very small adapter so had to go back home.
Second trip out that day I got set up but with the current type of dish, the location and general state of the set up making contacts was a challenge. I spent ages faffing about getting in a flap, this is how us ham radio folk spend our time in the hobby and we tend to look back and attach the emotion of joy to the experience.
Each trip out is a opportunity to learn and improve things.
I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My UA-cam channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.

I had the same issue with the DX-Patrol helix antenna, bad uplink results. I changed to an Ice Cone Feed v2 solution and this is comparing day and night. Amazing results with the Ice Cone Feed antenna.

Another excellent video Carl. Looks like a trip to a hill/mountain with your satellite kit is on the horizon (pun intended)

Great video Carl, No such thing as a waste of time mate, its all a learning curve, some curves steeper than others but he who persevere come out the other end triumphant. Got to hand it to you, Your certainly not afraid to get stuck in regardless. Anyway, keep up the good work and keep these videos coming. 73.

That's a success Carl! I'd go higher up. You always go to some wonderful, scenic places. Get above the tree tops! Less traffic/distractions too.

Enjoyable waste of time... that just about sums up my foray into 4m over the last couple of weeks. I'm glad I sat myself a budget and stuck to it. Enjoy your videos, carry on carrying on. 😊

As usual very informative video, and, like I've said in comments on your previous qo100 videos, helping me with my first qo100 setup 👍 I'm using the DX Patrol Upconverter with an SG Labs Amp. Hopefully on the air on the next few days when, like you, sorted out some decent cables.

With band conditions lately, most of my /p expeditions have been a waste of time. But at least I’ve managed to enjoy the great outdoors. Thanks for posting 73 Mike

Great video Carl, very interesting. For video and photography work we use weights to anchor the tripod as there’s always uneven ground or wind. Keep up the good work 73s 2E0SGL

What's the groundstation device? A transverter? I'd imagine that presenting a 50 impedance on it's input, hence the perfect SWR. Great vid, Carl. Very interesting this satellite stuff.

    • @M0SZT
      @M0SZT  Рік тому

Yes it's a transverter and other elements such as GPS, LO etc

Hi Carl, hope your well. What a interesting process to watch someone go through. Two police vehicles in one video, and some people wandering round in the fields, and then to top it all off , a inconsiderate farmer having trees right in the way, iam a bit lost for words hi.
Seems like things were against you from the start.
I would suggest testing any equipment before leaving home, take spares for the particular station you are using, and nothing about satellite , I would head for a hill away from everything, especially a police speed trap. I am very surprised their didn't wander along just to be nosy anyway hi. Their would probably give you a ticket for having a out of control dish in the wind hi.
Hope you have more success next time, and from a 90% cw man it's fascinating to watch your video. 73.

Yes 80cm dish would be better, but take more time to setup, narrower beamwidth.
Keep TX line as short as possible
Is the skew correct for LNB Skew: -19.3°
Are you using RIT, the stations coming back to you sounded off Frequency

    • @M0SZT
      @M0SZT  Рік тому

I didn’t use RIT although looking back it would have made a difference

Keep at it Carl. You’re Tx cable is definitely too lossy. It’s too thin… what is that..RG58?? Use something like LMR400 (equivalent or better) and keep it short as possible. These cables are about 10mm thick minimum. Actually I’m surprised you got any contacts. Did you check skew on reception? Also… try CW at the lower end of the band. That always gets into the satellite, even with just peanuts of power and a lossy cable 😂.
Thanks for the video. 73s de F5VMJ.

Carl, I cannot find any information regarding anyone in the states working geosynchronous satellites with a dish. I only am finding operators using Yagi antennas working low orbit satellites. Maybe we don't have a satellite like QO100? Can you offer any advice on this? Thank you for sir.

Not a waste of time mate! Try Clee Hill (hope I have spelt it right) also, given the high freq you are on, should not a short Co Ax run be used, as on the new Icom unit? good try though! 73 Jim M7BXT

Hi Carl. Learning and improving on those experiences is never a waste of time.
The whole setup looks super interesting, and I’d love to give that a try someday soon... How much does that setup cost?
Transverter, dish, feed horn, cables and all.

AMSAT-DL has made very clear for a long time than full duplex operations is requested by users who want to use QO-100.

Carl , thank you re your short video .. Well can i say the shoe did the trick ... Focusing the lnb respect dish is very important ... also accurately pointing at satellite ... ..
As one or two members of discussion have mentioned monitoring down link is essential . But inspite of equipment setup and signal losses you eventually got a readable result , thanks to the shoe .
Experimentation is what Ham Radio is all about don't loose site of that fact .. The more accurately you can point the dish the more signal you will vacuum up ...
Yes Solid reflection surfaces will catch more wind ...
So as you say , your results are getting better 👌
How do you work out where to point your dish Compass or Software package ?

If you can't hear your downlink you are kinda wasting your time on satellites , plus you should at least use SDR to hear your downlink, at a minimum!

Carl , Nothing re Radio is a Waste time .. AR is all about experimenting and learning from those Experiments ... successful or not ... being able then to advance your results ... in the meantime you are enjoying the Wonderful Brit sunshine . G1XZL/ZL2SCI
