    I have had this lens for 6+ months. It has become my favorite lens. I have an A6500, an A7Rii, and an A7iii. I really like it better for portraits on the full frame, but I use it on the 6500 for photos and video often. It's so sharp!! I also have the 24-70 G-MASTER and I use this lens far more for portraits. I shot some senior pictures, graduation pictures, and prom pictures for clients during this end of the school year season, and while it was not the only lens I used, the pictures I got from it were perfect in every shoot I did. I almost bought the G-Master 85, but read several reviews of this lens and decided to try it as it is over $1000 cheaper. I am not disappointed in the least! It is the best lens for the money I've ever used. Great job.. and keep the videos coming.

      Steven Boesky just curious how you like to use it on the crop body. Do you find it useful for isolating subjects in nature outdoors?

      Lloyd with the crop factor in getting about 127mm. It can be a little long but I like the effects I get with it. I also really like how fast it is. And it's is sharp.. Really sharp..

    Just arrived at my appartment, after a early morning golden hour trip on the island of rhodes... I love this lense more and more. Not only for portraits (for what I bought it for), but also for street photography. She is quite special, you have to walk and try a lot to find the perfect spot... but it‘s SO worth it.
    Almost my favorite, only second to my Sony 70-300 G (which is twice the price and twice as big). She is for sure my favorite prime lense. Tack sharp, fast, great bokeh.

    Got it. I used it today (on my a6500) in a video. The focal length was great. It is a great lens to fill the focal length range. I have the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 (love it) and the Sony SEL35mm f/1.8. Also, the Sony FE 85mm F/1.8 (also full frame) I'm starting to leverage lenses towards a future a7III purchase. Why not? Still, the a6500 is my body for now.

    I love love this lens too! Super sharp, fast focus, relatively small for FE, focus hold and autofocus toggle all for ~$600. This is pretty much the default lens on my a7r iii.
    It's mainly used for street photography and taking pictures of my cats. The 80cm minimum focusing distance does make it unwieldy to use indoors, but I believe that's par for the course for 85mm focal length.
    ...I used to use a6000 and a6500, but the lack of fast zoom (like you mentioned in your tamron zoom video) forced me move away from Sony aps-C, even though I did love the a6xxx bodies.
    Sure wish Sony would make more lenses similar to the value of 85mm f1.8. Imagine if sony had affordable quality 24mm 35mm 50mm primes!

    If you can get your hands on the 90mm 2.8 macro OSS, you should give that a try, I think you'd really like it. Focus isn't as fast being its a macro lens but the images are beautiful. It's a really heavy, solid piece of glass

  • @richardpcrowe

    I was using a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 on my A6500 with the MC-11 adapter and really liked the focal length. However, this lens (not needing an adapter) is lighter in weight than the Canon + MC-11 combination. The AF is a lot better also and I have all of the Sony AF parameters available. Additionally, I just love the focus hold button which I reprogrammed to Eye AF.
    This is, IMO, a pretty perfect portrait lens as you mention in your title. I am glad that you included images of your beautiful wife, This lens really flatters her great looks.
    I can see that this lens will become one of my favorite lenses for the A6500 and any other Sony mirrorless camera I will get in the future,

    I'm planning on getting the Sony a6600 soon and will use it for videoing important events and holiday trips. Sony NZ sells it for NZ$2,400 and the lens in this video is for NZ$1,000. Expensive kit but I want to be happy with a good camera for the next 10 years. May explore other lens options first. Plan to get my camera by June.

    • @ALxdCr4ftPlays
      @ALxdCr4ftPlays 4 роки тому

      Was considering the A7 III but that's over NZ$3,000 for the body only. The lens in this video looks promising. The lens needs to have stabilization for 4k videos and AF and be good with night time shooting too. Sony is expensive but Sony pride themselves on quality which is what I like.

    Thx for the review, it reflects my impressions!
    I'm using this lens for horse jumping and dressage photography on my A6300 for a few month - it has a perfect reach from the side of a normal sized track. I needed a fast lens (typical expo time is 1/1000 sec or less), the 1670z has been a bit slow and less sharp, the sel50 has been a bit short and I could not justify spending on GM glass.
    One thing I've noticed: it might lose quite a bit of contrast when using wide open and slightly facing to the sun.

      I plan to get this for my a6500 but will just be for my eventual upgrade to full frame. I think a A7RIII for a hobbyist like me might be overkill so I might lean with a A7III and just use the a6500 as a back up/video camera.

      Make no mistake.. the GM is another league of smooth bokeh, subject separation (3dish pop) and of course more light gathering. I tested the 1.8 and batis and ended up spending the extra money on the GM. Still the 1.8 is great and best value/Performance Sony lens.

    • @MeAMuse
      @MeAMuse 6 років тому +2

      Not really worth a comparison on crop. The biggest difference is the focal length. 85mm on a crop body is going to be very long for working with a subject. Most portrait photographers like to work at 85mm - 105mm as it gets them a pretty good compression while being at a workable distance. You heard him saying that you can't really use it inside... that because 130mm is just not super practical. There is more to photography than image quality...

    Don't you get a better optical performance when using a full frame lens on a cropped sensor since you're taking only the central area, which tends to be the sharpest on lenses? Great review btw!

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  6 років тому +2

      You would think, but apparently from what lens experts say, for optimum optical performance you should be using the entire lens, giving you maximum so-called "lines of resolution."

    Apologies if I am incorrect, but I thought the 85 1.8 would have, if Tony Northrop's edicts are to be believed, in fact, have a 1.5 x alteration to the aperture -= f 2.7. Is he correct?

    Seems like a super lens... I am relatively happy with the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens with am MC-11 adapter. I use this for portraiture on my A6500. The IBIS of this camera really helps shooting with this lens. The Canon is also a pretty small lens and even with the MC-11 added, it doesn't overwhelm the A6500. I'd like Eye AF but, I am happy with Face or even with Manual focusing. I don't think that I will be spending the $500-600 for this lens.

    Thanks for the review, I was really waiting for this one! How far would you say you have to stand using an APS-C for a shot like the one in 4:03? I am curious because I plan on buying this and shoot in extremely crowded places (Shibuya for example) and I am afraid that having to stand way too far would make the shooting session kind of chaotic.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  6 років тому

      I would estimate 20 feet away. Outside, it really isnt that bad - unless you are trying to get a head-to-toe shot.

    • @XtoGTA
      @XtoGTA 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply! I think that would be quite a stretch in APS-C then. Maybe when I can grab a full-frame. Shibuya's crossing has around 2000 people every green light, so 20ft without anyone interrupting would be quite a hard task. Keep it up, great video as always!

    I'm selling my Alpha Mount Sigma 70-200 f2.8 because it just wouldn't focus well on my a6400. It worked fine back when I had A Mount cameras. I loved that lens. I'm replacing the zoom, painful as it is to see it go, with this 85 1.8. I've learned if I have a sharp enough lens I can do a significant amount of cropping on the computer which is sort of like zooming. It won't have the reach but it should be great for outdoor portraits.
