  • This started a from a comment asking if it's possible to make the Beyer M400 sound like the Beyer M88. After some experimenting... no chance; the M88 has a light Hostaphan diaphragm. This led me to compare a couple of 1980's Hostaphan mics with a current mic, the sE V7. Surely forty years have made a huge difference...

This is absolutely amazing! Beyer has been making incredible microphones for long. I have been using many of them and I love the M700. Many thanks for this very detailed review. I learned new things about microphones I have been using for many years!

6:49 I completely understand where you're coming from as far as the "size" of the sound on the V7 not being quite as expansive as on other mics. I do think that I prefer this approach because it allows for better localisation of sound source in a busy mix with lots more sonic elements, but it does end up sounding quite a bit less impressive stand-alone, no?
Thanks for this one, a friend purchased an Ethos not too long ago and I rather liked how it sounded with my voice as I got to try it, but comparing your original video on it vs this grille swapped version leads me to want to experiment, hah!

My thought at the moment is that if I have everything, or too much, I can reduce down stream but if it's missing, I can't replace it, only boost what there is which can sound unnatural.

@@AntonBrowne Spot on Anton. I'm looking for the mic that has "everything" or the most "natural" sound. That way I can remove what I don't like. Well, which one is that exactly? Who knows? Maybe I have to watch all your videos to find out, right... :-)

Great comparison, I was quite impressed with the m700 in the video, think it would sound killer on female Vox due to the added proximity and clarity on top, I just recently acquired a Sennheiser Blackfire Series condenser mic, the 5032p model from a car boot in Shepperton for £25, I was so happy as this was Sennheisers flagship in the 90's and was quite expensive, turns out that the Blackfire series were for more rockier stages who preferred darker mics as their typical 4 series ie Md431 441 etc were more for pop singers who wanted sparkly on stage. was wondering if you had any of the blackfire old school Sennheiser mics in the same range for comparison as I really love the sound of mine?

Which preamp or soundcart are you using to hear the differences so clear?

Just a Mackie Profx8 desk, which seems adequate for the task. Speakers/headphones are more of an issue IMHO.

Sorry 2 say sir, but its getting bored..
Please, compare the AE 5400 to your arsenal. AT AE5400 is the best for me, rather than KMS 105, on the stage

Thanks for watching/commenting. Why not do your own review - if you have the mics, then I can link to you.
