What a great episode, so much detail about movies I have never seen and the props from Ralf were simply amazing - please invite him back for some more episodes of The Monster's Den very soon!
Chris' passionate spiel about The Planet of the Apes sequels on the last episode has led us to having an Ape Marathon this weekend, and I was in complete agreement about Conquest being the best of them all. Movies 1-5 were all excellent and we both enjoyed them thoroughly. We even watched the Marky Mark one yesterday, huuuuuge mistake. Making our way through the new trilogy now with only War to go, let's see if it lives up tp the hype... Cheers🍻

I was watching Collector's Corner, yesterday, with two comics shop owners. For the final trade, the visiting appraiser wanted a low-grade Amazing Fantasy #15 (1st Spider-Man) in exchange for an original Kong theater ceiling hanger silkscreened on acetate (one of only 8 remaining known.) The collector wouldn't go for it. Ralph would have blown his top... as did I.

The universe was off-center the minute Alo started shaking his head at the hilarious prop. The trademark Alo rant against the Jackson Kong did not disappoint, but it missed the mark; I enjoy that movie, even if it was almost ruined by an extra hammed Jack Black. Imo, 1976 Kong is an absolute masterpiece; easily the best score, cast/acting, majestic feel. One of the most underrated films of all time in any genre. The 1933 original is amazing too. And I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for King Kong Vs. Godzilla '62. Jackson's CGI-fest was a tasteless atrocity imo.

Fantastic episode gentlemen! I will say to piggy back off of what Jamie said that yes, horror films need to be off in their own separate category for comparison. I love the 2021 Zilla vs. Kong despite the movies many flaws. All I cared about was seeing a giant ape, and a giant lizard duke it out and destroy some buildings; never cared if the plot made any sense. If I wanted to watch a more "respectable" monster film, I'd watch the original Kong or Godzilla.

Movie is way too long. They should do another edit, get it down to 1 hour and 30 minutes or so and do it in black and white. Take a hatchet to it and make it only keep the key elements of the story using the original as a template. Some amazing bits in that movie (the ending makes you gasp when he's flying around the Empire State building) but way, way to indulgent.

They know that the vast majority of movie-goers now only care about special effects. And by that I mean CGI, cuz there are no models, stunts, etc.
I've had more than one person (certain age group, of course) tell me that crappy movies were good or great cuz they didn't care about the story, just the effects.

    • @LarryFleetwood8675
      @LarryFleetwood8675 2 роки тому +4

I agree with Chris here, it's candy ass silly and above all I don't like the look of the film. Had they made it say 10 years before or even 5, this would've looked very different as 2005 was right at the very beginning of some huge industry changes in terms of post-production practices of movie making, in particular stuff like grading. So the whole thing has a video game feel to it, I'm not a gamer anyway so fantasy/adventure movies with nonstop over-the-top CGI action (even basic action movies per se) is a big turn off for me.

I'll agree to disagree With Chris on this one. King Kong is essentially a revised version of La Belle et la Bête (The Beauty and the beast) and Jackson's version is a truer adaptation than any film before it.
Jackson's version takes the time to create an environment to ensure the audience buys into the relation between Anne Darrow and Kong. In setting it in the depression era, Jackson relects the desperation of all the characters and places the emphasis on "the innocence retained" nature of Anne. It's that unspoiled gift of Anne that makes her such a prize for all the characters including Kong. Jack Black's relentlessly driven Orsen Welles inspired character (perhaps the true monster in the film) sees her as the vital centre piece of his epic, Adrian Brody's cynical playwrite Driscoll views her naivety as liberating and Kong views her as an alien soul mate amongst the rubble and ruin of Skull Island.
The film is not flawless as the stampede verges on comical and the CGI in this particular scene has not dated well, there is simply too much thrown at the screen. On reflection, what is dynamite on the story board does not always transfer well onto the big scene. The Kong vs T-Rexes battle is a set piece of the ages. The whole sequence is a film within a film and is perhaps one of the best action sequences ever committed to film. The initial act with Darrow fleeing from an unsuspecting Kong to find herself chased by one beast to another, Kong's initial fight with the T-Rexes with an avalanche of plausible wrestling moves, the Spielberg nature of the vine battle followed by Darrow now seeking Kong's protection in the final act, all masterfully paced and beautifully executed.
Much is said about the ice rink sequence but this it is essential to securing the emotional tie in. Here, Kong is shown to be vulnerable and Darrow and Kong are ironically for the first time on an equal footing, for a few precious minutes the dancing couple are away from all the outside intrusions and harshness of any of the worlds. It's visually akin to Disney in having an almost dreamlike magical quality, deftly supported by a helplessly romantic James Newton Howard sweepingly score. It is Peter Jackson's stage to make the audience believe there is a love between both parties which in turn constructs a more emotional finale.
Last but not least, Andy Serkis delivers the most believable of Kongs in a performance that has real depth and nuance, yet never compromising the fact that Kong is an ape. This Kong has loved and lost, cried and laughed and perhaps more importantly conquered and been conquered. It was beauty that finally killed the beast.

Peter Jackson King Kong is my favorite. Followed by the 1976 one with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange. 3rd, is the 1963 King Kong vs. Godzilla. May have to watch the 1st 1. Been a very long time.

Makes no sense for them to risk their life to save Ann. The movie establishes that Karl is the only character that likes her.

I just picked up the 1976 King Kong from library with checking it out it's okay I don't like the Kong is a guy in a suit and it's kind of dated 1976 but it's all right Jessica Lange was really hot back in the day

I dunno. Putting 1976 at #1 and the original at #4 seems a little nuts to this nutty guy.
And the rest do kinda suck. But you can still find entertainment (along with childhood memories) within a sucky movie.

the 1976 kong is the WORST attempt at anything I hve ever seen. Its lousy and looks cheap, and when you compare it with the original 43 YEARS EARLIER, it looks even worse if that's at all possible. If asked to rate this movie between 1 and 10? I wouldn't even bother to answer. NOTHING comes anywhere near the original.

Have yet to see the Peter Jackson Kong.
But the King Kong _video game_ they made for that movie was awesome. Super fun, challenging yet fair. You played as Kong for part of the game, including the end. Emotionally quite powerful, I'm not afraid to say.
And if you beat the whole game with a high enough score, you actually unlocked an ending where Kong lives in the end. How cool is that?
Well worth tracking, even today. Truly worthy of the noble beast.
    Great topic, btw!
