I was at the Knebworth show on 22 June 1985. Weirdly, I'm wearing the t shirt I bought at the gig, as I type. Even after almost 40 years, it still fits. The full line up was (from the bottom up):
    Alaska
    Mountain
    Mama's Boys
    Blackfoot
    UFO
    Meatloaf
    Scorpions
    Deep Purple
My biggest memories of that day is it being the wettest "Mid Summer Day" in over 300 years. It started raining just as Alaska came on stage at about 11.30am and finally stopped raining when we were waiting to leave the car park at about half past midnight. My other memory is more of a nightmare. The toilets were like medieval plague pits. Some nights, I still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about them. Other than that, a fun day.

A question: Man, why were Purple playing at Hofstra in 1973 when Nassau Coliseum opened in early 1972? I guess they were playing at only the Felt Forum at the same time - but three days. Maybe they couldn’t sell out really big places in or near the city at that time.

Stockholm 1970 is the one for me
In Concert 1970/1972 these were recorded for BBC Radio, the first on in the studio, with a dj talking between songs. Probably why the audience is a little subdued in parts, especially 1970
Coverdale broke his mic stand right at the start which is why it's "hinged" on California Jam
    Missing
Space Vol I&II (Made in Germany)
Perks And Tit San Diego Sports Arena on 9 April 1974
    Perfect Strangers (Live)
From the Battle Rages on Tour there are a few great bootlegs but proper recordings: Knock the Truckin' (Turin, Italy and Kassel Germany) and In Your Trousers (Stockholm)
Come Hell or High Water - Ritchie wanted early shows filming because of Gillan's propensity to have vocal issues and the water was meant for a camerman. Ritchie wanted no camermen on stage

    Interesting Notes.
Randy California and Chris Cross both played with them during the early/mid 70s replacing Blackmore due his illness
Next one can be heard on a CD bonus of a Japan concert in 75. During that tour Glenn Hughes get asked in an Interview (US interviewer) if he will describle their music as Heavy Metal? He didnt know that word and was very confused about that term. Its an US term; english back than may described these type of music as High enery rock, perhaps heavy rock, or hard rock or Progressive rock

Slight correction...Come Hell Or High Water (Birmingham NEC -October 16th 1993), wasn't Ritchie's last show with DP.
He quit a few shows later, on November 17th 1993 - Helsinki.

Pete, Please tell me you have the Made in Japan box set with all 3 complete shows including all the encores!!! It was released in 2014. I bought the 3 disc set that came out in 1993, but noticed they took a couple songs off the sets as they were released on the original MIJ, but that 2014 releases it so killer, and comes with a reprint of the tour program. I have all of what you guys showed us, and would like one official release with JLT on vocals. I have a boot with good quality, but need an official one. Also that 1993 tour that Rick showed was originally released in a 4 disc box set titled Live In Europe with a show from Stuttgard and the NEC, the last couple shows with Ritchie. Great collection of live purple - there was also a History, Hits and Highlights 68-76 DVD that came out in 2009 with a lot of live footage on from places like the Bilzen festival in 1969, mk1 performing on High Hefner's Playboy tv show and their perfomance on Germany's Beat Club/ Rockpalast doing No No No
The three songs from the concerto recording were also originally released on the album 'Powerhouse' in the late 70s on which there was a live Black Night from Tokyo that was also on 24 carat purple and two at that point unreleased tracks Painted Horse and Cry Free.
In the Absence of Pink - the Knebwrth live CD was a recording by the BBC - when I heard it on the radio I'm sure that Under the Gun was broadcast, however it doesnt feature on the album and wikipedia says it wasnt recorded so I may have just imagined it. Also the Live Encounter DVD has Ian Gillan singing with a throat infection - not his greatest hour to be honest- not to mention the version of Child in Time on the BBC 1970/72 set where he doesnt manage to hit those notes - the 72 set was recently released separately.
There's also a few You Tube shows from the Infinite tour - live at the BBC and live from Helfest that are pretty good too.
Not forgetting the 'now what live tapes' and 'infinite live recordings volume 1'.
That Satriani set that Pete held up is, I believe , a bootleg - as I have the same one. They also officially released a couple of sets of bootlegs from the mk 2 reunion and Steve Morse era and there were the Deep Purple Appreciation Society's Sonic Zoom releases of some of their1970s boots.
Tons of live purple to enjoy and as Pete says each one gives you something a little bit different, especially those wth Blackmore on.
Have to say apart from MiJ and MiE (on which many of the songs are apparently from Saarbrucken though they've never released the Saarbrucken show yet despite there being teasers that it would come out as a MiE deluxe set - maybe they mixed parts of each of those three concerts together to make the best versions of the live MK3 songs?) my favourites are the BBC 70/72, Graz and Paris 75 - and Long Beach 71 and 76.

The 1968 live recording comes from a pro video that has deteriorated badly but the audio was still half decent, legend said Hendrix went straight backstage to meet Ricardo after the show, and Clapton had them dropped from the tour next day.
The three Deep Purple live tracks from the Sept 69 show on royal albert hall was already available on Powerhouse in 1978 , first album to be released after the break up
Deep Purple - Live And Rare is one of the so many half butchered editions of the 1970 stockholm show originally released in 1989 as Scandinavian Nights... the EDEL release with the dvd is the only one in proper order with all in between song banter
Deep Purple in COncert was released in 1970... the cd version had one extra track and the show was re released a couple of years ago with an extra track from the rehearsals and all the inbetween song banter as Machine Head live,
The 1971 show is incomplete, there is a complete double cd bootleg doing the rounds, no idea why they didnt release the full show
Live in London was a BBC in COncert recording to promote Burn
Before Graz and Paris we had in 93/94 the Mark 3 Final Concerts double album that functioned as a extended version of MAde In Europe, with tracks unavailable elsewhere.
Deep Purple - In The Absence Of Pink - Knebworth 85 even thou double album misses a couple of tracks, available on the bootleg version
Two of the shows that were recorded for Come Hell Or High Water were released in 2006 as Deep Purple - Live In Europe, 1993 (Stuttgard and Sheffield) and later both shows were released as separate sets.... Those Germany 1993 shows are some badass shows by the way... one taper got them all and they are amazing ricardo fests
A lot of really nice sounding boots from the Satch shows... but no official releases, except the one track on Gillans Inn

In Concert was released in the UK on the back of the success of the Deepest Purple compilation, and the sessions were recorded for radio in front of a small audience, which is why the audience is a little subdued. BBC recordings of that era are often better than official releases. There was also an earlier UK release called Powerhouse which had some outtakes and live performances, including the three from the 1969 Concerto show. I was at Knebworth in 1985. Not the greatest show the band ever played, but the greatest show I've ever seen, and a better performance than the Australian show that was released on DVD.

C’mon Pete ! Live in London was released in 82 , on Purple records …. To me it is the very best of the not Made in Japan live Purple albums , much prefer the original vinyl over the cd reissue, there was a good reason they left off Space Truckin’

Nobody's Perfect is awesome, to me anyway. Three tracks at least, Child in Time, Lazy and Smoke on the Water, rival their MiJ counterparts. Highway Star and Strange King of Woman draw level with theirs. The new songs sound powerful. Woman from Tokyo and Black Night aren't all that impressive, both sounding a bit uncommitted, and the short version of Space Truckin' feels incomplete, but Hush makes up for those slight disappointments.

Agree with your first 2 but I can't listen to Cal Jam '74. The sound is awful, especially Coverdale's vocals. It sounds like he's gargling mouthwash or something, I have the DVD but never watch it.

  • @ronnienose8608

With the California Jam Purple were a bigger selling band than ELP (in fact, in '73 and '74 they sold more abums than anyone, invlufing Zeppelin) but Ritchie only wanted to go on just as the sun is setting, and therefore ELP had to close despite expecting to go on before Purple. Plus, the typically mischievous Blackmore wanted to make a statement by blowing up his amps, making it impossible for ELP to top them.
Coverdale has said that when he joined Purple he chose to use a boom mic stand rather than a straight one to be different. Another interesting bit of information about the California Jam is that Coverdale had a $1 million royalty cheque in his back pocket while onstage, which was a massive amount in 1974.
I do prefer Live In London album, not just because the mix is better but I think Ritchie plays better on it.
There is a two CD version of Nobody's Perfect (and it's remastered), and includes great versions of Bad Attitude and Dead Or Alive (Ritchie is fantastic on that!).
I was at Birmingham for that Come Hell Or High Water, at the front. Travelled 300 miles and was gutted Ritchie was being silly (as he did when I saw them in '87, when the band had to play Smoke On The Water without him,). However, he does play as one great solos at times (he's got some fire on Lazy).
Agree with Pete about not liking David and Glenn singing Mark II material, it's as if they are performing reluctantly.
I was also at the Concerto in '99 and no one in the audience knew Ronnie was going to also be performing, plus Gillan did some some solo material, as did Jon. It was a very emotional night, my favourite Purple gig.
They did Child In Time again in 2002 and Gillan hit all the screams and got a standing ovation. Def Leppard's Joe Elliott was there that night and has commented on being blown away by Gillan's performance.
Live At The Olympia '96 was the first live release with Steve Morse, from the Purpendicular tour. Even.has a horn section on a couple of songs. Great set list.

Blackmore would never play riffs/solos the same way live? Hendrix is the 'poster child' of this. Can't wait for the next episode featuring live Hendrix recordings - although how you gonna touch Band Of Gypsys (especially the full/expanded shows)? Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival from 1970 is a good one. Live In Maui (the 'real' Rainbow Bridge concert) is tremendous. Of course Woodstock...
I know this will get hard core Purple (and especially no-Blackmore-no-Purple) fans riled but my fave live Purple is This Time Around - Live In Tokyo '75. As we all know Bolin wasn't always ready to go live due to his drug issues but there's some great stuff here. Special shout out for Graz 1975 too on the Blackmore side. I think the Purple/Bolin stuff is so special to me since his stint with the band was so short (and the resulting music so different) - and to me CTTB is one of THE great 70's rock albums...For early live Purple how 'bout BBC Sessions 1968-1970? For live Purple/Morse I'd go with Live At The Olympia '96. I don't usually go for symphonies playing on rock albums but In Concert With The London Symphony Orchestra/Live In Verona (With Orchestra) are pretty good too. So is To The Rising Sun (In Tokyo)

Most those people didn't know who they were but once they hit song 2-3 crowd was getting into it and by the end the realized they saw something great and Schenker was on it. The UFO songs were awesome as usual even with Romero being lazy not singing all the correct lyrics. Great to see shit like that.
