This is absolutely my favorite build you've done! I've been looking forward to your R2 build after the car version and I'm so glad you went all out for this one! R2-D2's my favorite and your version looks so good! You did great making all the details and everything, especially the chest and legs, which were so much more complicated to make than I would have thought. Overall, it's awesome so great job!

Nice build. I've been procrastinating as to whether to build a 'full' motorised Astromech or just a static prop. Perhaps I should do both, starting with a static prop like this to get the feel.

I really want to make a “Builders Club” level wooden and metal motorized Artoo- but now I’m convinced the best way to do that is to make him out of foam first, then replicate those pieces individually in the more expensive, harder-to-work materials. Brilliant!
Totally! Personally, if I were to go all out and build a motorized one, I’d still make some of the outer greeblies out of foam just to make them damage resistant.

Amazing you did this all with foam mats. It has imperfections sure, but considering how it was built, that's really impressive and couldn't be avoided. The only big fault is his middle leg is too long and makes him look like he's pointing his groin up to the sky. lol But when you have him on 2 feet, he looks great.

Very nice! I've never built anything like this. I've always wanted to, but have never even tried. I never seem to have the time.
Anyway, for the vents that have large openings in them, why not put a piece of fiberglass screening behind them? Maybe it's not 100% movie accurate, but it would help hide the interior. I'd even go so far as to maybe print out an image of circuits or other 'greeblies' and put it behind the screening, so it looks like you're seeing his inner workings. It would keep people from seeing that it's hollow and add an extra layer of detail for very little work.
You should make the waiter addition that R2 has in Jabba’s Sail Barge so that he serves as a really cool looking table.

To hide the interior supports a little better, use some thin black foam or cloth as a backer.
I'll probably just hit it with some flat black paint. I'm touching up the paint job as we speak

Where do you get your reflective tape and what brand is it
idk, i got my lst roll years ago. It was an automotive product though for bikes, so maybe try a bike shop or autozone.
Thanks and also did ever try different colored reflective tape for different blade colors to save you a few minutes coloring the blade in post

Thanks! I recommend making the frame out of something solid like wood or metal so that the servos are secure and doing the outer panels and details out of Eva foam to keep the weight down and make it crash resistant.

You know, it was like 80 hours of actual work but I had a bunch of other stuff going on and it ended up taking a month to complete.
You should modify these so that the people who don’t know how to modify them themselves can make Chopper.

I think it's about an inch under scale on all axis, but i recently built a new dome that's taller so now the height is correct.
