  • In this video I show you some of my favorite brass, copper and bronze snare drums. First I talk a little about each drum and then I demonstrate each snare on the drum set.
    Besides the drums that I showed you and demonstrated in the previous Black Beauty video these are the metal drums I use the most. They all have a unique sound and work well for specific types of music.
    Included drums with their demo times are:
    Time Stamps
    0:00 All of the Drum Descriptions
    16:27 1920's Ludwig & Ludwig 14"x4" Professional Dance Brass Snare Drum
    21:07 1980's Slingerland 12"x 7" Brass Drum
    25:17 1990's GMS 13"x 5.5" Bell Brass Snare Drum
    28:22 1980's Sonor 14"x 3.5" Cast Bronze Snare Drum
    31:57 1990's Pearl 14"x 4" Copper Marvin Smitty Smith Snare Drum
    36:12 2008 Pearl 14"x 5.5" Hammered Brass Jimmy Degrasso Snare Drum
    If you want to hear the Sonor drum tuned down you can hear that on youtube by clicking on this link: • Brazilian Variations f...
    All of these drums have a very specific tonal quality that I like for different genres of music. Some are good all-round instruments while others fill a very specific niche.
    The other equipment I am using for this video consists of:
    Doc Sweeney Stave Drums in African Olive wood 20"x 16" Bass Drum Toms: 10"x 8", 12"x 8", 14"x 14 floor tom.
    Cymbals are: Sabian Jack DeJohnette 20" Ride Wuhan 20" Lion Cymbal Paiste Traditional 16" and 17" thin crashes Sabian HH 13" Regular Hi-Hats Sabian 12" AA Mini Hats .
    Heads on toms are Remo Pinstripes on toms Bass drum is an Aquarian Power stroke 1 head.
    Microphones are a AKG C24 stereo overhead and an Shure Beta 52 on the Bass drum.

      I have one. It sounds as amazing as it looks. Tune it high and it has a crack that you can’t get from any other snare

    I fell in love with the deGrasso snare drum and was lucky enough to find it on ebay. It‘s really an awesome brass snare.

    Hi Rick, great video!
    I wanted you detailed opinions on Sonor D420 Piccolo 14X4 and Signature Designer Brass 14X4, what is your experience vs 593?

    Hello from Greece! I've watched many of your videos, I believe your drumming is amazing sir. I think I own the same Slingerland 12' snare drum, I think though that it's a 12x8 and I bought it as a copper shell snare drum. Maybe I'm wrong. It is really heavy though.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 роки тому +2

      I think they sound very unique.
      I am not crazy about the rusted metal look but the sound is very different than what I normally use.
      I have a few of their drums and I will do a video with them in the future.

    PS. How firmly do you recommend securing a snare in the cradle of the stand? Put another way does it affect the sound at all?

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 роки тому +2

      Hi
      I rarely tighten the cradle all the way except when I am playing on an orchestra drum.
      I don't feel like it affects the sound too much either way but I did try the Tama floating stand and that definately let the drum ring longer.
      It's only attached at one point similar to a floating tom mount like the Yamaha YESS system.

    Do you find any difference in sensitivity between thicker shelled metal snares and thinner ones? Cheers

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  4 місяці тому

      The difference is mainly in volume. The thick heavy bell bronze snares are much louder than the thin ones with more body to the tone. They both are very sensitive with thinner heads.

    What's the sonic différence between a bronze and a brass shell ?

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Pierre
      It depends on the thickness of the shell. Most all cast bronze shells like the Sonors are thick and very heavy. This gives them a dryer sound. They can be pretty loud like bell brass drums. Thinner brass shells like the Ludwigs are darker and will ring a bit more. They are also much lighter. Copper is between those 2 metals and in my opinion is a great metal for snare drums.
