  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Alexis Hunter, Author of “JOI LANSING - A BODY TO DIE FOR - A Love Story”
    About Harvey's guest:
Today we’re celebrating one of Hollywood’s most popular buxom blonde bombshells of the 50s and 60s: Joi Lansing.
She was often referred to as “the Marilyn Monroe of television”, because of her beauty, sparkling personality, and her musical and comedic talent. She appeared in classic movies including “Easter Parade”, “Singin’ in the Rain”, “Touch of Evil”, “Marriage on the Rocks”, “Queen of Outer Space” and “Bigfoot”. On TV, she appeared in “I Love Lucy”, “The Jack Benny Show”, “Perry Mason”, “Maverick”, and she had recurring roles on “The Bob Cummings Show” and “The Beverly Hillbillies”. And if you’re a fan of the “Superman” TV show, Joi Lansing’s character was the one who beat out Lois Lane, to marry Superman, in the 1958 episode entitled, “Superman’s Wife”. She also had a very successful Las Vegas nightclub act. Miss Lansing tragically succumbed to cancer in 1972 when she was only 43 years old.
Our guest was not only Joi Lansing’s best friend, constant companion and caregiver for the last 3 years of her life - she was her lover. In 2014 she released a poignant and heartbreaking book entitled, “Joi Lansing: A Body to Die For”.

I been talking to Alexis on FB Messenger and on her page I am such a huge fan of Joi Lansing for years been a long time. As she was Joi's partner till her death in the early 70's. I am going to have to think the 1rst movie I saw she made. Likely "Queen Of Outer Space" '58 and "The Atomic Submarine" '59. I knew who she was prior from being into vintage women of the golden age of Hollywood even as far back as to the roaring 20's. All this is so heart breaking, I can tell she has an innocent quality I picked that up by just looking at some of her photos which I saw after a bunch of her movies. rotten mother fuckers how they treated her as a sex object she makes me smile she is not just sexy she is so amazing for many reasons with talents and I always liked her singing when I showed my friend Chris ah ''Hillbilly's In A Haunted House'' '67 I am learning so much about her I love this! She is at peace now and I think I will see her someday! :)

What a raw and heartbreakingly moving interview. Once again Harvey, sincere thanks for providing insight into the lives of those we never really knew. The love and heart are so evident in Alexis' story, a story worth telling.

What a lovely woman and your interview with Alexis Hunter is terrific. You're so compassionate, Harvey. I'm 68 and I remember Joi when I was a little girl watching television sitcoms. She was stunning and I wanted to look just like her. I'm going to read the book and can't wait for the series.

Dearest Harvey and Alexis, there are things I must say if you will permit me. This has been one of my most cherished books since I first read it a few years ago. Alexis, you are so right…This is a LOVE story. The love in your words, the love in your book, the love in your actions. This book is a cautionary tale, it is historical, it is informative, it is so very interesting, and above all it is a beautiful love story even though there are also such sad realities. The love shined through for me. Thank you for shedding light on Joi. I was mesmerized by her as a kid. Every time “that beautiful blonde woman” showed up in a tv show in the 60’s I got a great big smile on my face. She was not only beautiful gut SO SO funny, and what a talented singer. But there was also a sweetness that emanated from her. So when I came across your book several years ago I was so excited to get to know more about her. Then to have it be such a well written book and such a beautiful love story, I was so touched and have recommended it to so many people. Harvey, thank you for being so supportive and respectful. Thank you for your beautiful words to Alexis and saying “Everbody should have an Alexis Hunter in their life”. Boy is that the truth. How blessed anyone would be to have that kind of love. From the minute I read this book I hoped it would be made into a mini series. I jumped for “Joi” to hear that those wheels are turning. I will say that as Alexis was mentioning who might play Joi, my mind was saying Jennifer Lawrence, of course, Alex your thoughts are spot on as well. Whoever you end up with, I pray they bring dignity to the role of their portrayal of this beautiful (inside and out) actress and person. I wish you the best of everything Alexis in life and all your endeavors. And Harvey, thank you again for bringing such treasures to us and bringing you heart as well as your expertise ❤❤❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤❤❤

The sincerity and genuine love Alexis tells about Joi moved me to tears. I went this evening, in a small Danish town called Odder, from never having heard about Joi Lansing to lamenting over Alexis' tragic loss and inspiration from her devotion to Joi. Totally moved me, a 74 yo male heterosexual ex-pat American. Thank you for your story Alexis and thank you Harvey for your respect and support of Alexis. I'm getting the book and can't wait to see a mini-series!

I was so surprised and happy to have come upon this interview. I've read the book and actually had correspondence with Miss Hunter on Facebook several times a few years back. I'm old enough to remember when The Beverly Hillbillies premiered, and I also remember the first time I saw Joi Lansing on there. I clearly remember thinking that it was Marilyn Monroe. I was only eight or nine years old, and though I remember the day Marilyn died, I also remember thinking Miss Lansing was M.M. She was definitely very talented in her own right. It was very sad what Miss Hunter said here about Miss Lansing being terrified of growing older. For anyone that maybe isn't old enough to remember those days, I have an old motion picture magazine with an article in it with the big black headline "Has Marilyn Had It Because Of Old Age?"
She had just turned 36. Hollywood can be a glorious place and it can also be a vile, evil place. Anyway, wonderful as always.

Starlet Joi was featured on the cover of LIFE magazine (March 28, 1949) under the spelling Joy. Her two mid-60s Scopitone music "videos" - "Web of Love" and "The Silencers" are wonderful, time capsule classics! Thank you for this informative interview.

Harvey, thank you so very much for making & sharing one of the best interviews I have ever seen and listened too!
I really had no intention of listening to all of it, but once you started, I couldn’t stop listening!
I have been a big fan of George Reeves aka Superman, ever since I was a little boy in the late 1950s & (early) 60s.
The one episode that I remember the best, and always love seeing even now is ‘Superman's Wife’!
Even as a little boy back then, I couldn’t believe how beautiful Joi Lansing was!
As soon as I get done writing this, I’m most definitely going to order Alexis Hunter’s book on Amazon!
    Thank You 🙏 📖🌟

Wonderful job, Harvey. Your interview with Alexis Hunter was quite effective and poignant. Joi Lansing was indeed breathtakingly beautiful and quite a talent. Artists like Orson Welles and Lucille Ball clearly recognized it. I really need to read this book and shall. Alexis' love and devotion is awe-inspiring.

Great interview. Terrific questions and such warm, authentic answers! I will subscribe. I also loved watching Joi on The Bob Cummings show. Poor Schultzy was daunted by her! Joy’s joy of life came through in her singing and cheerfulness in the opening scene of Hillbillies in a Haunted House! A real pro giving it her all. Alexis is lovely and doing good in the world. Here’s to compassion! I hope she believes in “life after life” and that Joi is assuring Alexis that she’s alive and well in the next realm. Love to all.

Great insight to a actress I remember from the 50's & 60's. I read where she was due to do a film with Frank Sinatra & she had to pull out because of her health. He stepped in & paid for her funeral.

The book we promoted in this interview is really wonderful. But I don’t recall any mention of Sinatra paying for Joi’s funeral. But my interview with Sinatra’s publicist Jim Mahoney (don’t miss it) confirmed that Sinatra paid for Judy Garland’s funeral.
