  • On the occasion of the 49th birthday of Fenriz, I present you 'Under a Funeral Moon' Full Album with Commentary by Fenriz.
I do not own the track. All the right goes to Darkthrone's Fenriz, Nocturno Culto, and the record label, Peaceville Records. Enjoy!

When Mayhem was starting, Vulcano and Sarcofago were doing Black Metal already, actually Dead and Euronymous were influenced by Sarcofago (Dead even appears with Sarcofago's t-shirt in Mayhem first rehearsals). As long as people don't stop telling these lies, Black Metal story will always be falsely attributed to Norway, and I'm not even talking about the first wave of Black Metal that started in Switzerland, with bands like Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Sweden with Bathory, they were doing Black Metal already at the beginning of everything.

Black Metal Started with Venom. Not all of the songs were black metal but they had enough of them; just like Black Sabath had enough metal songs to be called metal. They did not have all of the stereotype sound; but they had all of the musical and general vocal cues of black metal and drove the genre, even the original drummer for bathory said they were influenced by venom, plus "Born For Burning's" main riff was essentially lifted from "Don't Burn The Witch"

Black metal does NOT come from Norway.
Assuming the cut-off is the Live in Leipzig recorded in November 1990 it's easy to demonstrate that there was an organic build-up to that sound internationally all through the latter half of the 80s:
    Bathory “The return” ‘85 (Sweden)
Obscurity “Ovations to death” ‘86 (Sweden)
Poison “Into the abyss” ‘86 (Germany)
Bathory “under the sign of the black mark” ‘87
    Mortuary Drape “Necromancy” ‘87 (Italy)
    Obscurity “Damnations pride” ‘87
    Sarcofago “INRI” ‘87 (Brazil)
Tormentor “7th day of doom” ‘87 (Hungary)
    Samael “Medieval prophecy” ‘88 (Switzerland)
    Tormentor “Anno domini” ‘88
    Master's hammer “Finished” ‘88 (Czechia)
Sadistik exekution “The Magus” ‘88 (Australia)
Goatlord “Sodomizing the goat” ‘88 (USA)
    Master's hammer “The mass” ‘89
Blasphemy “Blood upon the altar” ‘89 (Canada)
Rotting Christ “Satanas tedeum” ‘89 (Greece)
Mystifier “Tormenting the holy trinity” ‘89 (Brazil)
Master's hammer “The fall of idol” ‘90
Samael “Worship him” ‘90 (recorded in march)
    Mystifier “T.E.A.R” ‘90
Necromantia “Promo tape 1990” ‘90 (Greece)
    Beherit “Demonomancy” & “7th blasphemy” ‘90 (Finland)
Master's hammer “Ritual” released February ‘91...
    And more!

You are confusing thrash/death metal with black metal, most of your early mentions there are thrash or death metal and if you professs to know metal you should know that.

Ignore any kind of 2nd wave-formatted ''opinions'' - you are on the RIGHT track. The first wave is long, irregular, unpredictable in matters of own style, so that is why those chestbeating robe-tearers keep mistaking it for black-thrash, death-thrash, whatever you got, with kitchensink-drama attention-seeking indignation. I have no problem in saying the 1st Wv did last almost for TEN years, until the kids around Euro's treetop club made it their own , especially Darkthrone and Burzum, the ones with a very original and musically equipped take on how the NEW BM should sound - reactionary, backwards and ultra-orthodox. Tell those guys Mystifier are Black Metal, tell those guys that bands like Poison, Tormentor, Master's Hammer, Rotting Christ, Root, Samael, Beherit, represent the back bone of European1stW second tier, after the Revelation period encompassing Venom, Mercyful Fate (yeah, i know...), Hellhammer (only), and Bathory of course. And i really can't see where the freakin problem is - chronologically speaking, even the early Mayhem were tail-caught in the big 1stW BM time-trap. You see, sometimes, when some one comes up with ''surgically perfect'' Metal genre definitions, you can always sense the scent of Metal's own Ministry of Truth, E:M:M:A.:. Avoid.

I thought Blaze sounds alot better than this. The production on this thing is funny.
