Virtually every single conservative ghoul that argues in favor of child labor is a spoiled rich kid turned talking head who has never worked a physically or mentally demanding job in their lives.
Despite that, I think the only reason they take these positions is because they are paid to. I think most of them know that child labor is abhorrent.

Pretty much, the whole point of ending child labor was to EDUCATE children and stop them from being abused by corporations and their own parents. This reasoning that kids aren’t ready for work at 17/18 years old is nonsense, they have literally spent 14 years of their life getting up early and going to school for 6-8 hours a day.. what else does that I wonder? 🤔

Another reason conservatives want to relax child labor laws is because it is a way to devalue adult labor. If you have more children willing to work for less, it depresses wages for everyone.

    • @snapgab
      @snapgab 7 місяців тому +32

Child labor in the form that it took during the industrial revolution was largely an anomaly in history.
A relatively brief period of time where advances in technology suddenly meant that even children could be very productive, causing a new kind of exploitation that hadn't really existed to that degree before and that regulation hadn't caught up to yet.
For most of human history we've recognized the value of just letting kids be kids for as long as possible.

When those cows needed to be milked a 5AM or those crops needed to be harvested because if the weren't the family would starve during the winter, EVERYONE in the family worked from before sun up, to well after sun down , no matter your age.
That is why a full moon is called the harvest moon in the fall.
The thought of having a 'childhood' is a recent attude, when mechanical means were utilized to offset manual labor.

I could have enjoyed the beach all summer like my cousins but nope. I was forced to work by my elders because we were broke. I’m 46 now. I’ve literally worked full time for thirty years. I’m so tired. I feel like I’ve never really gotten to live or travel or do anything I want to because I’ve always had to work. If I live to 65 I will have worked for others profit for 51 years. How is this ok? I can see making someone contribute for half their lives or their prime in a society but 51 years. It’s crazy. I’d kill to retire now.

I've noticed something similar with the "we need more X" (e.g. plumbers, farmers... any physical job) people. Everyone says such jobs are definitely needed (which they are) and they have nice things to say about them, but I have yet to see someone volunteer to do those jobs. Let's be honest, most people don't want to do those jobs, I know I don't, regardless how well paid they may be, not necessarily because they're looked down upon (although some do see them as inferior), but because of the back-breaking nature some of these jobs have. It's always someone else who has to do those jobs. They cry about downfall of mining or manufacturing, but none of them volunteer to work in a mine or a factory. They might volunteer others though, just not them, never them.

@octavianpopescu4776 a big issue with that was trying to get in some of those industries. Several stories detail how the electrician and plumber's unions would literally gate keep the jobs for something up to the last 6 of more years. For a good chunk of the Ought's they said no to me labor to train. Then the other shoe landed and as the retirements piled on, not enough men and women could step into the old roles there is more work and not enough journeymen level workers to do the jobs. They scrambled hard in the last decade or so from what I've heard but it's been interesting.

I wrote down a caricature of Brett Cooper for a future book.
As a frustrated young woman aggressively criticizing her generation, cosplaying as a boomer, and has a weird, creepy Electra desire for older men like Jordan Peterson (calling them the 'true' manly men of the old days).

I dont' think all "child labor" is bad if the kids are of a certain age. My mom ran a business from the time I was three and I helped her out there during my childhood including cleaning the property and mowing and building shelves with my dad and installing playground equipment and taking out the garbage.
I started a home based business myself selling a product I made at home at age 13 and it did so well locally that I had to stop it so it wouldn't interfere with school. In my teen years, I worked in a junkyard, in fast food, mowed yards, cleaned cars, worked in consumer credit, and in telemarketing while singing at weddings as a side hustle. Everntually the singing got me a scholarship to college. None of it ever interfered with school and I always had money in my pocket which meant i had dates and better times in my teen years. It was a way to make money and it built a great work ethic I carry to this day. It wasn't a negative overall. Now I might have done slightyl better in school if all I ahd t do was homework, but it dind't so impact my grades that it was ever a probelm. I went to college, law school, and grad school. And the work ethic I gained as a kid got me thorugh those things. I don't think kids learning to work hard while young is bad for them long term. They shouldn't be in dangerous jobs like mining or poultry slaughter or heavy manufacturingor utlity line work or oil drilling, but working at a restaurant or an office is fine. It IS positive.

Ah, brings back memories of me applying to 30 restaurants in my area trying to get a summer job immediately following 2008 and not even getting a call back for a single one of them. I guess that was just my personal ambition that made me apply so much and not the complete lack of job opportunities.

I’ll say something here. The lady is right, it is normal to punch a clock at 8AM, and all this, but that’s exactly the point.
This that we call normal is absolutely crazy and wearing us all down. Everybody is spending their whole lives in massive debt and chasing money.
I am now old but have sympathy for these young people regarding student loans and this grind you into the ground way of life. It’s the norm but horribly unhealthy.
These people ridicule them, and yes, if you do all that garbage you can go but a BMW and drive it around before it rusts, gets hit or just wears out, but this is really a big rat race.

@@KarmaKahnI worked throughout college, except I think for one semester. Even during high school, but yes, that was during the summers.
There’s so much emphasis here on work, work, work, and these young people want to experience life. I am sympathetic to that. You get in these corporate jobs and they take over your life and are soul crushing.

@@ahmeda.3198 Sure, but you weren't clocking in at 8:00 a.m. unless you went to night school.
But yeah, I agree with what you are saying. It is a rat race. We are going to spend all of our adult life until old age working, so there is no need to hurry getting jobs while in school.

    • @ahmeda.3198

@@KarmaKahn You’re right, and at the time, I loved having a job. It was at a pizza place, and all this, but I loved getting out of the house and feeling like an adult.
At some point though work consumes your life here in the US. Working crazy hours and going to such lengths to not let anybody down, etc, and so much competition the client may find another vendor, etc.
So I was able to pay off student loans, buy a fancy car and all this, but I look back and think what an empty life, in so many respects.
I never met anyone (a lot due to working), and then when older would go to exotic dance clubs, and these women would say ‘you’ve got it made’ just because you get drunk and spend money on them, and I would think ‘you are so wrong, this is all hollow, you’re being fooled by the money because everybody here is always chasing money, etc.’
