I sang this song to my Wife at our wedding reception in 1999. I also got my butt kicked for singing it in the lunchroom in high school in 79. This is one of the greatest songs ever written. And that is saying a lot.

I wish I was born 20 years earlier so I could go to all those shows back then. The best music was in the 70’s. Getting beat up for being gay was why most gay and bi people were closeted then. Including Freddie Mercury. I am not gay but try convincing a bully of that. I don't know if they actually believed it or if it was just the excuse they used to harass us. It was a different world. I do agree that we had the greatest music of any era but some things still needed work.

Queen songs are widely being covered by various musical ensembles. This proves how much their music mean and how it goes beyond standard "popular music" boundary. They were exceptionally talented musicians, composers.

I think a lot of people won’t know how good their writing actually was unless they’re musicians themselves. They wrote incredible musical compositions. You sit down to start learned some of their music and you’re like “crap, this is complicated” but without really knowing how complicated it was, especially their 70’s music. People say that this kind of talent doesn’t exist anymore and that today’s music is garbage. I would almost agree with them except I know that it does. The problem isn’t a lack of talent, it’s a lack of taste in today’s culture.

Me too 😢. My son was stationed in Okinawa for 2 yrs. We didn’t see him that whole time. I’d listen to this song and just cry. He loved Okinawa and traveled several times to the mainland He loved Japan, the people, and the culture.

I love rock music and have many bands that I really like, but if I was on a deserted island with only one album/CD, it would be Queen. I’ve been a fan since 1974 whilst in college. Recently, I listened to a musician critique a Queen song. He said that out of all bands he’s critiqued, Queen is the most pleasing to the ear. He said that all of their songs are euphonious. It would be interesting to watch people’s brain MRIs while listening to Queen 🤔. I think there’s a science experiment here.

To answer your question: I'm a lifelong Queen fan, and this was always one of my favorite tracks. I wrote the choral transcription/arrangement for my choir because I thought this song in particular could be well-adapted mixed-voice choral singing, and the message is very relatable. And for this concert, it was especially appropriate & pertinent, as we were celebrating the group's 20 year anniversary and saying goodbye to a founding member who was retiring. (Maggie, the older woman crying at the end). It's a fantastic anthem! Kudos to Brian May for composing such a masterpiece!
