Pierce Brosnan took a role in the movie for this heartwarming reason! The very same week that Brosnan was called up and offered a role in an ABBA movie with Meryl Streep, his father passed away. The night after receiving the call, Brosnan went to see the show and although he had no idea who he would be playing in the movie if he took it, he met the actor who introduced his character of Sam Charmichael. At that moment Brosnan knew he had to take the role as his father was called Bill Carmichael.

I think because Bill Carmichael was his stepdad, who if I'm not mistaken, was more of a father figure. If he took the role of Sam he would have the same last name as the man who raised him
