  • Video build of the Academy 1/72 P-40E. Kept me busy while looking for work. Scale is a little small for my liking.

I just received this kit via Amazon. It'll be about the third time building this sameone, but I'll be using a different color scheme and markings, for an RAAF aircraft.

Does this kit have an option to have landing gear put up so you can display it like it’s flying?

Nice job! Remember to keep your work centered under camera, and zoomed out. Also the blue banner the bottom has to go. Well done on the build!!👍

Good build. Only thing I would say to do different is to remove the project name from the video. There were times we could not see what you are doing due to the name covering up your work. Your logo is fine where it is at. Nice!

Great looking build and reveal rolled into one! 1/72 is a little too small for me, too. Cheers : )

Well done, but only a little complaint about the OD, isn't a little too dark? If I remember the fading was very intensive, expecially in the Far East

The military specification for the topside of this plane in the year 1941 and 1942 was Dark Olive Drab. The color in this video is correct to replicate a P-40E before the plane was exposed to the weather in Alaska where it would have oxidized (thin pasty white layer) from salt water mist. This plane is an "Aleutian Tiger" -- as in the Aleutian Islands (part of Alaska; part of the USAAF -- see 5 pointed star on the wing). Notice that this plane has a big head -- a Tiger's head (not a shark's mouth) painted (for the scale-model, the designs are decals) -- on each side of the nose of the plane.
To replicate oxidation, put isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, and swipe the airframe with the swab.
      -----
Regarding a different group in a different air force (the Republic of China Air Force now in Taiwan) ...
The First American Volunteer Group (1st AVG) received this same model plane (the P-40E) 4 months after the 1st AVG had been in action with an earlier hybrid export variant of this plane (the Tomahawk Mk. IIA with Tomahawk Mk. IIB wings). When the 1st AVG got their first shipment of P-4OE planes in late March 1942, they were also painted Dark Olive Drab on the topside, but the 5 pointed star on the wing was covered with a decal of a 12 pointed white sun -- the national insignia of the Republic of China Air force (RoCAF).
Correct, there is probably no place in the world where paint fades faster than where the 1st AVG were flying from between 13 July 1941, the day after the first Tomahawk was completely assembled from sub- assemblies shipped in crates to Rangoon (now Yangon), the [British] Crown Colony of Burma (now Myanmar -- independent of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) to when the 1st AVG contract ended on 4 July 1942, while they were in Kunming, China.
Tomahawks (dark green blotches and dark earth blotches on the topside) had different painting specifications than the P-40E.
Like Part 1 of this video says, the 1st AVG were nicknamed the Flying Tigers a few days after they shot down Japanese army planes (not Jap navy Zeros) on 23 December 1941 and 25 December 1941. That last week in December 1941, the story was shared by telephone to Time Magazine in California, where the nickname took hold in the next edition of what was then a weekly magazine.

Great work man! Two questions: what are those big brushes you used for decals? And where did you get those pegs? I need pegs with rubber ends on them. Again, great vid man! 👍🏻

This comment would have been worthwhile, if not for the "annoying as hell" part. I think people who cannot leave UA-cam comments without being overtly negative are annoying as hell.
