    I wrote to Nikon support to see if the Anger PowerCore III Elite could be used to charge and/or Power the Z9. No answer yet but if it works on a Z7II as you describe I would think it will work on a Z9.

    great video Joe but I thought it was worth mentioning that powering the camera via usb-c is just that and doesn't actually charge the battery while inside the camera. I think this might be a bit of a common misconception and a bit misleading by Nikon in their marketing for this camera.

      Yes, I too thought that the battery was being charged when I connected a powerbank to the USB-C port. It simply prevented the battery from draining. To charge the battery via USB the camera has to be turned Off

    I used the links that you posted. The power core doesn't power/charge anything when i have it plugged into the wall and a device at the same time. As soon as i unplug the cord from the wall it well charge/power my camera and other devices. The wall charger alone with the C to C cord plugged in will also charge/power my camera. The orange light will light up.. Nikon Z6ii . Thanks for the info 6:24

    Maybe this is a stupid question, but is there a reason you couldn't use a USB-C to USB-C cable straight to a USB-C power adapter? If doing the same but with the power bank plugged in works it seems like it would work for this too, but I'm assuming there's a reason since you didn't mention it.

    I just bought the Z30 and for some reason the lead seems to be very temperamental. I plugged it into the Mac to charge (per instructions) and it worked for a while. I tried to do the same thing again and it doesn't seem to work. Same with using a power bank (using the exact lead). I don't know whether it is the lead, the battery or just the camera itself.
    I know you mentioned that the lead that comes with it doesn't power the camera, but I've had instances of the led light turning on - just intermittently. Very frustrating!

    A photo, I found in a Google search, shows the EH-7P power adapter (which Nikon Claims will work to charge EN-EL15C batteries in the MB-N11 grip on my Z6 II) has a 5V 3.0A output. Several 5V 3.1A (Amperage is current drawn so more is just headroom and the MB-N11 should remain within its amperage draw range or result in slightly faster charge) wall warts are readily available and inexpensive in the USB-C output configuration. I have an Anker 20000mAh power pack that I bought to charge my phone or iPad while camping but it is USB-A and 5-6V at 3.0A output. The voltage is what concerns me since I am not sure if the MB-N11 circuitry can take the extra volt? However, it seems to me that any male USB-A to USB-C cable, also available online should work since it would not be solely limited to data like the cable that came with my Z6 II. Or did I miss something here? Also note that the EH-7P seems to be in very limited supply, most of which are “used” on eBay and Adorama has them back ordered with no receipt date posted. B+H doesn’t list it either. Does anyone out there know how much of an electrical fudge factor we actually have with our Nikon equipment?

      I´m working with an power bank and USB-A Output, together with a cheap USB A-C cable from Ikea. It woks fine. (Z6 II) producing videos for hours...

      It does work, but the usb-a port has to support QC 3.0, then it can deliver up to 12 volts. QC 3.0 negotiates the voltage with the camera and Will deliver the appropriate voltage, mostly 8 to 9 volts. Not many powerbanks support QC 3.0, Anker does not in the powercore 3. It just has PD on the usb-c port. Then there are some restrictions on usb-a with QC; if you make timelapses with longer intervals, the port shuts off to save energy because of no demand of power is detected during the interval. I don’t know whether usb-c PD has this issue.

    Thank you, this is helpful. I noticed I could use a usb-a to usb-c cable to charge the battery when the camera (Z7II) is off, but not to power the camera from the power bank when the camera is on - the camera just uses battery power. I will try the usb-c to usb-c cable.

    Very useful as usual. Very clear. Just one question if you connect up a power pack like Anker via the usb-c will that charge the internal battery?

    • @ShutterSpeak
      @ShutterSpeak  3 роки тому +1

      The way I understand it, it will run off the battery pack as a pass through. It should charge if the camera is off.

    Hi Joseph, As mentioned on Nikon Product page, I connected my Nikon Z6 II to my Laptop to use it as a webcam/live stream camera. Should I use UCB C to C cable? or C to A is OK ( for both Data Transfer and Powering the Camera as mentioned by Nikon product page). If its USB C-to-C Cable only, is there any benefit of using Apple Thunderbolt Cable (for better Data transfers)?

    • @ShutterSpeak
      @ShutterSpeak  3 роки тому

      The USB C to C requirement is for voltage, not bandwidth. I am not sure once you are in USB power mode you will be able to use the webcam feature. I haven't tried it. Let me know your results.

      @@ShutterSpeak Thanks Joseh. I found from one of the Nikon Videos that we need to use USB C-to-C for powering the device and for data transfer(Web Conferencing/Live Stream). One follow-up question can we achieve anything better (in terms of charging speed or higher data transfer) using a Thunderbolt Cable compared to USB C-to-C Reference Link on USB Power (&Data Transfer) ua-cam.com/video/PNlXNeH3Osw/v-deo.html

      @@fabmartel Thanks. I tried with just USB C Cable. There is a significant lag. I thought its the cable and tried different cables. Then I thought it was my Laptop's USB C port. After spending hours trying to fix the issue, I accidently cam across a video on UA-cam only to learn that Nikon's Web Cam Utility is the issue. Its just 15 frames/second with a very weird resolution. I now ordered Elgato Camlink

      Keep in mind that the USB-C is just the connector. Thunderbolt 3 (and 4) use the USB-C connector and the communication standards are backwards compatible with USB 3.x. You should be able to use a quality TB3 cable on TB3 ports as well as ports with USB-C connectors supporting USB 3.1 Gen 1, Gen 2 and USB 3.2 Gen 1, 2, 1x2 and 2x2.
      I myself am using a TB3 cable for power and data on chargers and for data connections and it works great.

    Hey Joe, great, clear, helpful video. Can the Anker battery pack be used if I also have on the MB-N10 Battery Pack? Or is that redundant? Thanks so much.

    • @ShutterSpeak
      @ShutterSpeak  2 роки тому

      That isn't covered by any Nikon documentation but I don't see why it would change anything. I would think you could still use an external battery pack.

  • @nanotec6

    Why does it need the camera battery, if it's running off the power bank? Srsly? Nikon surely likes to fuck over their customers a lot!
